2020 0.1 Jungle Carpet Python Progression
Hatched 6/21/2020 via maternal incubation by Mike Curtin at Scattershot Exotics from his Mr. Clean x Valentina pairing. 65grams on arrival, spicy and spunky right out of the deli cup but calmed down within a minute or two. Only 7 months old and I’m very excited to see her yellows develop even more.

Letting her settle in to her quarantine tub for a bit before feeding but she’s currently up in the perches stalking the floor. Mike said she ate last week and is good to settle on for a bit. May offer a rat fuzzy in a day or two, as she’s been out on her perches shortly after sunset the last two nights.

Can’t say enough good things about Mike. Great guy, super easy to work with, happily held on to her while we waited for good shipping weather, kept me posted all along the way, and would not hesitate for a second to recommend him.

Thinking maybe Estelle/Stella partially because of her star shaped head stamp, trying to scheme up a middle name because that’s my thing. Looking forward to many years of retina scorching black and yellow scales from this kid here.

That's a bright little jungle you've got there, wow! Congrats!

Glad to hear that she had a nice flight and is settling in well. I'm looking forward to watching her progress over the years -- if she's that bright at less than a year old, I can't imagine what she'll be like when she's older.

Yeah, sold a bunch of artwork in the last couple months and decided I’d treat myself to a late Christmas gift. Might need to invest in some shades with how she seems to be coloring up.

Not the same kind of lineage as Nick’s stock, as there are some undocumented animals in this snakes background, but I decided I needed a classic screaming yellow and black jungle here and this girl quickly grabbed my attention from the moment I saw her.

While she can’t be verifiably be labeled as “pure” m.s.cheynei she most certainly can be labeled as “pure badass!” Hah! Love her either way already. Probably attempt first feed tonight if she’s out on her perches again.

Almost texted you a pick and decided I’d let you find a surprise thread from me [emoji41]

Nothing wrong with something not 100% pure!

One of my favorites is a total mutt.

My little cup of joy back in 2014 sure didn't look pure coastal.
    https://i.imgur.com/mc9NJ4h.jpg

I picked her because she was so colorful.
    https://i.imgur.com/VFhEvTm.jpg

Nothing like your neon light show, but still neat.

A carpet in any mixer, mutt form is usually pretty cool.

Think you scored once again, and she'll look really nice in one of your AP cages.

I'll forgive you for not texting me LOL!

Nothing wrong at all with non pure! Your Jewel is a great example. Jungle type colors combined with a sort of diamond/coastal intergrade pattern. She’s a stunner for sure.

It’s also possible that my girl ~could be pure Cheynei, but without documentation for every animal in her pedigree it can’t be verified and as such wouldn’t be ethical to label her or any potential offspring down the road, should she be bred, as pure jungles.

Love seeing that pic of your girl in her cup. I know I’ll miss all of my carpets being that size once they’re bigger, but also can’t wait to see them with some decent size on them.

I kind of miss the small sizes too. The skin is so soft when they are young.

Judging by the parents of your girl, I think a few sheds down the road you are going to see electrical yellows.

Thanks for reminding me that Jewel could have a splash of diamond in her. I know Nick said one of the parents had "some" diamond traits, but he was speculating.

I'm waiting on the new book. I know Nick mentioned jungle and coastal sharing the same DNA and there was some discussion that a jungle could be a northern locale of coastal.

In any event, I think you just need a Bredli and you'll be pretty close to The Complete Carpet Python keeper.

Might as well buy another cage LOL!

Might as well buy another cage and an extra apartment just for the critters hah! Need a Bredli someday and I'd still love some Metcalfei as well. Seriously need to close the doors here and not add anything until new animals hatch here someday hopefully. Plenty of space for everything here to grow up and have plenty of cage space for them all to comfortably occupy.

Anxiously awaiting the new book as well. When I talked to Nick on the phone last spring he said they're not using any of the same pictures and are shooting for 500 pages. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy when it's done!

I'll be your accountabili-buddy, Crook! Say it with me: no more new additions* until everyone is in adult caging! Woooooo :P

I too am eagerly awaiting Nick's book. After hearing about all of the work that's gone into it it sounds like it's going to be phenomenal. Hopefully it'll come out sooner rather than later -- I held off buying an old copy since the new one's due to come out soon, so I don't have a carpet book on the shelf yet. That's a gap in the literature that certainly needs to be addressed!

Thank you, WP! Only problem with that is I’ll have adult caging and then some probably by March. No more new additions until they crawl out of an egg in my care or I until I have tenure haha! Whichever comes first.

Gotta get everyone on their adult size prey before considering anything new too. Don’t want to exceed the storage capacity of my little deep freezer either

I am feeling this part of the post. Along with the purchase of any new animals is going to have to be a second deep freezer, and taking the time to make room for it. Right now there is plenty of room, but my current freezer is going to be jam packed just before stuff starts hatching this year. I like to keep a good surplus in case sizes go out of stock.

Exactly. I can fit a year of prey for everything in a small portion of my freezer currently, but 6 out of 7 here will eventually be eating med-large-xl+ at some point. If I intend to stock up in my usual manner at those sizes I’ll take up a good bit of space.

Two rats down the hatch and second bowel movement so we had a first handling session while I cleaned her tub tonight. Easily the calmest of all my carpets on the first handling. So bright and so black and will only get more so. Love it.

Fresh shed this morning and good lord... screaming electric yellow and deep jet black. Also full of piss and vinegar. Nailed me on the finger a couple times, but only a drop of blood. Told Mike that he needs to start sending shades with these animals because my retinas are burning. His response? “Burn, baby, burn!”

Hah! Thanks! Yeah I honestly like it a lot more than the crappy little telescoping zoomed hook I have. Necessity is the mother of all invention, and a quarantine/juvie hook was necessary when I started seriously getting into Morelia over the last year and a half or so. Doesn’t get me out of strike range, but cuts down the number of strikes they land successfully. [emoji23]

This girl is a bit calmer the more confidently she is approached, which goes for all snakes in my experience. Act like you’ll get bit, you’ll get bit. Act like you’re not worried, less likely. She’s great and can’t wait to see her with more size and a few more sheds under her belt here.

Thanks, y'all! She's fairly calm indeed. A little jumpy getting a hook on her, but once she's out of the tub and I quickly get a hand under her she's pretty chill. Only handled maybe a handful of times since she's been here but hasn't even postured for a strike the last couple times. Confidence when interacting prevents many a mishap.

Can’t wait for her to be in a bigger enclosure. Every single night and morning she ascends and descends her perches at the same exact time. 7pm +/- 10 minutes she goes up and stares at the floor for 12hrs, then comes down just as the sun comes up at 7am currently. Could set my watch by it. Love it.

So bright I feel like I could get a tan while holding her. A little spicy still too. I kinda asked for it by touching her tail with a single extended finger. Big open mouth headbutt that didn’t even break skin. Been handling very sparsely and I’m sure if I worked with her a few times a week she’d calm right down. By no means an aggressive animal though.

You and me both, brother! Given her highly arboreal nightly routine she may get one of the 2’ tall cages. Nearing the end of the lead time on my new enclosures so I may be shuffling critters around once those get here and the semester wraps up for me. Will be a nice way to reward myself after a busy academic year

She looks great man, still making me want to jump on the carpet train.

Speaking of the end of your lead time. I called AP today because I'm about a month past what they estimated. Super polite, but she did say she had to "put me back in the works" whatever that means. She promised my enclosure would ship in the next few days, but made me a little nervous with her wording. Regardless, I'd call just to double check on your order.

Jump on it! The Morelia Mafia is growing stronger by the day! [emoji41]

My most recent cage order was with Herptastic. 4’x2.5’x1.5’ with RHPs and shelves(x3 cages). I messaged them at the 10 week mark last week and they said most orders are still running 10-12.

I love the AP cages I do have, they’re fantastic enclosures, I just can’t justify waiting 7+ months for a product. My last cage from them was in 2017 when they were still quoting 10-12weeks and it took 25weeks... I ordered in March and got it in September. I had moved states at that point and the best they offered was to pay the difference in shipping.

I’m seriously considering it, just want to do some more research first. Plus I’ve been tearing up Morelia python radio trying to learn as much as I can before I take the plunge.

I’ll check out herptastic though, AP did throw in some cage locks that I forgot to add and was trying to put for, and was super apologetic about the wait but still, I’m at the 8 month mark.

I’ve seen some differences of opinion but, if I did want to go ahead and put in an order, after quarantine do carpets do well in an adult enclosure when young, or is it better to move them up overtime like some other snakes?

Fantastic! I highly suggest the Carpet Python Round Table episode with Steven Katz and Riley Jimison (and maybe another guest I’m forgetting?). Lots of good info all around. And the Bredli Round Table is great too. Honestly can’t think of a bad episode. I listen almost daily through their back catalog. Happy to suggest some specific episodes as I think of them.

I’ve been moving mine up gradually as I have a number of different tub and enclosure sizes in my room available at any time. It can certainly vary between individual animals, but I know that some other Morelia folks here have gone right into adult enclosures with lots of clutter and hides with no issues. My 2-3yo carpets are in a divided T8 currently. May move them to a divided T25 next or maybe even go right into their adult cages when they arrive.

I just personally like smaller enclosures and moving up gradually as it’s easier for me when spot cleaning and making my rounds through my snake room. I don’t like sifting through tons of substrate hunting for bowel movements and a smaller, but still adequate floor space helps in that regard.
