Best Tub?
I was wondering what you guys think the best tub size to use for an adult ball python would be?
I was thinking a sterlite 1960 or bigger....
D oyou think bigger is better?

Re: Best Tub?
The Sterilite 1960 is fine for adult bps.

Re: Best Tub?
Iris CB70 ... it's what the pros use.

Re: Best Tub?
i use the 41 qt sterilite tubs, they are big enough. but i second adam on the iris cb-70 tubs. the iris tubs are completely smooth on the inside and this helps alot in cleaning and staying cleaner. the rubbermaid and sterilite tubs have ridges and grooves that can be a pain to get 100% clean. my next tubs will be iris.

Re: Best Tub?
I use Sterilite 1995's for my bp's. :) Haven't found any Iris tubs... :(

Re: Best Tub?
I am thinking about the cb 110 size tub i mean i know they dont need that much room but im only making a 5 hole rack so its fine for me.

Re: Best Tub?
really? a full grown ball can live in a CB70 - Dimensions: 17 3/4"W x 33 1/2"L x 6"H
only 6" high? considering how thick they get, they couldn't even coil in that size viv could they???
confused again,
aleesha
(should change my name to confused rather than recycling goddess...)
LOL

Re: Best Tub?
6" is plenty deep. They don't get THAT fat. ;)
I love iris tubs. The company doesn't change the tub sizes every time you turn around, and there aren't all these unnecessary grooves for snakie poo to get stuck in.

Re: Best Tub?
well i'm just thinking... there needs to be space for the hide, and then the snake...
i guess you don't have driftwood or something in there for them to climb on a little? so far my new little boy loves to climb all over his driftwood.
i was just thinking, a full grown would want maybe 12"?
edited to add: nice gallery on deviant!!! ;) i go there a lot for covers for my magazine :P and my hubby and my tattoos are there under "aleesha"

Re: Best Tub?
would a Sterilite 1986 26 1/8"L x 18 1/4"W x 6 3/8"H be ok for a full grown snake also? i like the latches that it has. i don't think ill need clips but don't quote me on that yet.

Re: Best Tub?
People who have a lot of snakes don't go for decorations. Driftwood is a decoration.. yes they may climb on it, but they don't need it to be healthy and happy.
A hide is maybe 3" high. The snake could easily go in it.. and even sit on top of it in a 6" high tub. I have blood pythons who are at least as fat as any ball python I've ever seen.. they have tubs that are 7" tall with the lid. They have TONS of room to go in the hide.. sit on it.. etc.

i totally understand when you have snakes for breeding etc you want the bare necc because you have all those enclosures to clean... but... as someone who has one snake as a pet, not profit - i just prefer to make their viv as nice as possible for them.
even with my fish tanks... i have 10 but each one is still decorated and cared for as if i only had one.
so what i was trying to ask and i'm thinking i didn't do a very good job... is 6" the minimum or the recommended size for the comfort of the snake?

If you're more concerned about display, then obviously a plastic sweater box isn't the best choice ... maybe a manufactured enclosure from Animal Plastics, Boaphile, or Vision that has some height and a glass front would work better for you.
Lots of people on this site use an Animal Plastics cage that works great for them ... I'm not sure the model number off the top of my head, but maybe someone can chime in with it.
A snakes "comfort" is a relative concept ... if a ball python has proper temps, a clean environment, security, and food, it's going to be very "comfortable".

 so size doesn't matter?
i know i'm asking a lot of questions... but i won't learn if i don't ask (and research).
so thanks for you time everyone i actually am learning a lot from this site, even though i may be a bit annoying with all the questions :bored:
-
Re: Best Tub?
You're not annoying.
The size of the enclosure does matter.. often too big is more harmful than too small. The enclosure doesn't need to be as long as the snake, but should be longer than half of the animal. A 5' ball python is perfectly fine in a 3' long cage.
-
Re: Best Tub?
oh okay... so it's more an issue of length not width and height? in other words... it can be low in height as long as it's long enough in length (but not too long) and width is always smaller than length... so no issue there.
am i getting this right. :P
so how high is too high? is approx 18" about the max you want for a ball?
-
Re: Best Tub?
just measured my rubbermaid. it's 30" x 18" by 12" high - so it should be fine for a male ball as long as he doesn't get over 4'
( i think i'm getting this LOL)
-
Re: Best Tub?
The problem with height.. the higher/bigger the enclosure, the tougher it is to keep your temps and humidity correct. I wouldn't go over 18" high.
-
Re: Best Tub?
So would a cb 110 be a good size?
-
Re: Best Tub?
a cb70 is fine plenty of room for the big girls. a cb 110 is a waste of money if you ask me because they dont need a tub that big

Re: Best Tub?
Maybe these pics can help you visualize it a bit better. These are Sterlite tubs from WalMart (sorry I can't remember the model #) but are 39 long x 19 wide x 6.5 deep (cost me all of $12.00 LOL). We use these for all our bigger snakes. Malachi, our only smaller snake, is in a sterlite that is 25 long x 18 wide x 6.5 deep (set up is the same except smaller hides of course).
The first is of Brannagh, our largest female at 48.8 inches long and just over 1,800 grams in weight in her tub with the top off so you can see it set up clearly. The black things are her hides which are actually big heavy rubber dog dishes with entrance holes cut out. Brannagh loves her tub except is growing out of her hides a bit lately LOL.

This is Orlah, our second biggest female at 44.2 inches and around 1,500 grams. As you can see even with the lid on she is having a nice time resting her head on the lid of her hide. She just ate and quite likes this position until she's ready to head for a hide.
https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...OrlahinTub.jpg
The smaller females often climb right up on the flat "roofs" of their hides and fit quite well under the lid.
For display purposes these sterlites aren't the thing, but for space and breeding purposes as well as ease of husbandry for multiple snakes you just can't beat them (or similar tubs). These are a bit bigger than the CB-70 Iris tubs though likely not as well constructed. They are opaque which seems to help these shy snakes feel safe when they exit their hides.
Hope these pics helped a bit.

Re: Best Tub?
Oh no problem, Aleesha...I know it used to confuse me with tub dimensions and so forth so I figured why not snap a couple of pics to make it clearer. Besides I'm a bit snap happy right now with a borrowed digital cam (my family, my snakes and my rats all truly hate me right about now!) LOL

Re: Best Tub?
oh no, not the BORROWED digital camera...
that is a deadly combination LOL i remember when i first bought mine... i took pictures of every wall, every plant, every person... everything i could hahahaha

Those look quite familiar. The size and looks are exact to the tubs I use. Sterilite 1995's. I get mine at Walmart too, only I pay around 18 dollars for mine. :(

Re: Best Tub?
Cody do yours have the big lid that bends in the middle so you can open either end of the tub w/o fully removing the lid? That's the kind I have and they are always $11.99 at my local WalMart. Love that as I don't have to take a huge lid off everytime I change water or whatever but the downside is that middle area is not rigid so you have to add extra things to keep it tight to the tub or bye bye snake. Also unlike the Iris tubs these tubs do have ridges and such (especially where the wheels are) so cleaning is a slight bit harder. For little old OCD me though it's no biggie LOL.
We love these tubs so much my father-in-law is going to try to design a custom rack around them for us as they are such an odd size we can't find anything they will fit into properly.
