One more try..... Help?

She is a pastel bamboo (this is what she was listed as). Any ideas on what other genes may be involved? She was born this way so it isn't the substrate making her belly this color, nor is she going into shed. She was just an oddball in the clutch. Hahahahahahaha. I love it! Yes..... Hatched. I'm definitely a newbie. Funny story, I had dogs all my life and the first ultrasound (that looked like an actual baby) of my first child moving around... Yep... I said "Look! It's kicking it's back legs!" uh huh.... That was me.

Oh my goodness!! I haven't seen a belly like that! If I were you I'd breed her to see if that's genetic or just a one-off. The peachy belly is adorable!

I remember Deborah asked you in the other thread what bedding it was kept on but I believe you said unknown since it was recently turned into the pet shop.
Sometimes reptisand can stain bellies like that. I hope it wasn't kept on sand but that was my first thought.

Just saw you said it was born that way. weird.

I've never seen this in a BP, so I truly HOPE it's genetic, but other than staining from substrate, my brain leans over to septicemia or burns...really hoping it's neither.

It's a little quieter on this forum lately, ppl have a lot on their minds (like eating & paying bills, maybe) but it worries me that among all our knowledgeable members
-many of whom breed BPs- no one has seen this phenomenon before. I'm not saying it couldn't be something genetic, but...:confusd: I'd keep all options open if I were you.

(Ask yourself WHY if it's so pretty & something rare was it "turned in to a pet shop"? Maybe a vet suggested expensive treatments & the owner decided to bail out...)

I'm not trying to ruin your day...I HOPE I'm wrong & you just came home with a million-dollar genetic anomaly, but think about the odds...

How long have you had this snake? Is she eating? Behavior normal? If she's not your only snake, I hope she is quarantined! Stool ok?

I should have been more clear. I went to the reptile shop for food for my lil normal and while I was there, I mentioned wanting to get a bamboo female to breed my boy to in the future. The owner said hang on and let me show you something that I have in the back. He brought out this beautiful snake but said she isn't for sale. They ordered a pastel bamboo from their breeder and this is what they got. The shop owner's girlfriend immediately called dibs and they put it in the quarentine area. She is taking it home this week. She said she was so sorry but she just had to have her. Lol. BUT....... she has agreed to let me stud my little guy out to her when they are big enough. I will get first pick from the clutch. I am just hoping for one like her. She indeed came out this way and I hope, as well that she is healthy and that it is not a health problem. I have since found out that the breeder, as well as the reptile shop have both had her on paper towels. I hope this helps. I have just been looking everywhere for another one that has this coloration and have not seen one. I'm sorry if I seemed shallow about not hearing from anyone, as I know this is a hard time for so many. That was never my intention. [emoji171]

No apologies needed. Anyway, keeping that snake on paper towels is a good idea. Not sure but I think snakes can also be allergic to things like substrates. I hope you
manage to make pink bamboo snakes in the future, or whatever...but I'm just not convinced it's anything genetic. I've kept many snakes for literally decades, including
some BPs, but again, BP morphs aren't my thing at all...just giving you my opinion for what it's worth, & only time will tell. ;) The skeptic in me also says that
some breeders aren't always truthful about whether or not something "came out of the egg this way"...they're promoting their animals to sell, remember?

My name should give you a clue. Bogertophis subocularis, aka Trans Pecos rat snake, is a favorite, as are most rat snakes. I also happen to love rattlesnakes, but don't
have any currently...I worked extensively with them for 20 years though. I have mostly rat snakes now of various kinds. If you love mellow snakes, the 2 best rat snakes
are Trans Pecos & Baird's rat snakes, both native to the desert southwest. I used to have and breed Baird's too. I currently have Florida rat snakes (mix of yellow, gulf
hammock & apparently Everglades that their former owner concocted) also a Korean rat snake (NOT recommended), corn snakes (incl. a 21 year old Okeetee from those
I bred), & some other misc. snakes (rosy boa, Aussie spotted python, TX longnose). The list of all I've kept or rescued is too long for here though.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother breeding a normal to that snake. But I personally wouldn't breed a normal at all unless it was strictly to keep the offspring as pets.

I only have a normal to offer but she's willing to breed them in order to try for more bamboos so that I can have a bamboo to start my collection. I would love to have a few nice snakes to start breeding in about 3 years time. I have only just begun and have soooooooo much to learn! I love this forum. There are so many people with so much knowledge.

I hear ya. But breeding a normal cause it's all you have isn't the way to go. Bamboos are pretty affordable, it would make more sense to just buy one.

Plus there's a lot of risk in "loaner" animals when it comes to breeding. Just not worth it.

And not to knock the shop owner's girlfriend, but if she's considering breeding that animal to a normal she's cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

I agree with Craig on this...you have much to learn about breeding snakes & BP genetics. PLEASE don't contribute to the overpopulation of 'normal' BPs just to try for
an unlikely (recessive) result. I personally LIKE normal BPs, but that doesn't make them in demand, & by creating more snakes that aren't in demand, your cute little
baby BPs will just not get good homes...OK? They'll be sold so cheaply as to be most likely treated as toys...:tears: it's just not right. And the economic fall-out from this
pandemic is not going away soon either...buying pets or good care of existing ones is sadly not going to be the priority for most ppl in the coming few years. Even if I
were still breeding a few kinds of snakes (as I used to) I'd NEVER do so anytime soon.

I am definitely understanding what y'all are saying. I didn't realize normals were not wanted. They seem to sell a lot of them there so I didn't know that. I want all of them to have good homes. I just thought she was being really nice in doing this so that at the very least, I would get a bamboo for her using my male and could use my money to get another morph. I just want to breed my own.

Most pet stores "sell a lot of [normals]" or at least that's what they carry, BECAUSE they are plentiful and so very cheap to buy & re-sell. If you care about
snakes, you'll find that being sold thru pet stores is NOT the best path in life for a snake...they're exposed to all sorts of pathogens & mites, stress from being
in the store & handled by all sorts of inexperienced people, & often those working in the store are not that knowledgeable, so that even well-intended buyers
are not doing things the best way for their new pets. :(

Just basic snake breeding here, but when you breed a normal to a desired non-normal, most or even ALL the offspring will be normal, & you'd have to hold them back to breed & prove out any of the desired trait they might carry that isn't visible. In doing all of that, you'll be producing a bunch of normals, & there are already so many people doing the same thing with other traits- it's just not what's best for the snakes, unless you want them being euth'd like dogs & cats are. Even now there are those who admit they sell such over-produced snakes as "food for cobras" etc. So if you want a bamboo, PLEASE just go buy one from someone who is producing them already, instead of making a bunch more normals.

Normals are beautiful, and they're what nature finds to be the fittest, but sadly, snake buyers (& even YOU) desire something new and different as "eye candy". This is despite the fact that after looking at it for a year or so, the color & pattern won't likely matter as much as the snake's personality anyway & you'll crave the next fancy morph that pops up. Don't get me wrong, I love living with snakes...I have lots of practice...but sometimes a poster of one makes way more sense if all you want is a color or a pattern to admire. Humans fall for what excites us visually...same with clothing, same with mates...& in time, we keep looking just because we're humans. But unless you want to wait YEARS to produce that bamboo (that may or may not be as good or as healthy as one you could find from a good breeder currently) please re-consider. By the time you're breeding them, you'll probably see another morph you like better anyway....:rolleyes:
