2018 0.1 Brisbane Coastal Carpet Progression
Hatched 7/25/18 by Nick Mutton. Arrived safe and sound at 9:50am, though understandably nervous and defensive. Not many pics yet as I want to settle her in before working with her too much.

Nailed me three times on the fingers and twice on the forearm. We’ll get her settled down in time.

I was lucky enough to be getting realtime updates from JM. I'm not only excited for him, but very envious as that beauty is in my top 3 list.

The little love bites come with the territory, and JM being a former retic man, was not likely phased by them. They do however appear to be a tad more than what a hatchy delivers.

I'll be very anxious to see the progression of this animal. A PURE locality, Brisbane, Coastal.

    Congrats sir!

JM gave me a heads up last night to look for a thread today. He kept the secret so I was stoked to see, I knew it would be good... and he DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!

I'm waiting a while before adding anything new, but I'll be eagerly watching this thread.

Definitely more intense and hard, clamping delivery of a bite from this one than previous or current critters here. Honestly I only got tagged by the retics a couple times including a full bite and wrap from one of them at ~6', but the carpet bites aren't bad, though they are definitely more plentiful haha! Being a year and half old though, yes, her love bites are much more impactful than my Rockhampton's bites who's only barely drawn blood once.

This is very likely going to be my last addition for sometime given current events and how that will change the economy and life in general. It's tempting to get a male to pair with her down the road, but with how spending habits may change for many folks I'm not sure how I feel about bringing more animals into the world that there might not be much of a demand for.

I just kind of selfishly had a "treat yo self" moment recently for a bday/job promotion and couldn't resist another carpet python. In Nick Mutton's words when on the phone with him the other night, "Have you ever opened a can of pringles, eaten one, and then put the lid back on? NO! IT IS FUNCTIONALLY IMPOSSIBLE! That's how carpet pythons are!"

Looking very forward to growing this animal up.

This species is really wonderful. I think for folks that are somewhat curious about reticulated pythons, but don't want to deal with the size or the possible aggressive tendencies of a male retic, a coastal or bredli carpet may fit the bill.

JM scored here and I'll bet there are many exciting updates on the horizon.

Peeked in her tub to change her water but think I’ll wait until she takes a meal or two before too much hands on interaction. Quite tempting though, I want to get as much biting out of her system as possible before she’s much bigger

    Hola,

Is she that much larger than your Rockhampton or is it just these pictures?

The Brisy looks like she's fairly substantial in girth already.

You scored there and I'm really struggling to hold off on anything until I know what's cooking a few minutes north of me.

    Howdy, partner!

Yeah, she’s probably twice the mass of the Rockhampton, maybe more. Don’t have a weight on her yet though. I got an extra pair of RBI mini hides for her but she kinda spills out the sides of them. Will give her the small hides I’ve got but they take up more space in the tub. I think she’s got plenty of room in this 11qt but may move her to a 23qt before long.

Definitely a much heftier frame than the Rockhampton too. Even the structure of her head is so much different. Much more broad and flat. So cool to have two of the same species that look completely different.

I say snatch up one of those Brisbanes from Michael Pennell! Drink the koolaid, come join me... [emoji48]

Way back on an Aussie chat board I brought up the discussion about head variation between different species of carpets. The coastals, certain types, seem to be known for wide, flat heads. The Darwins I've seen seem to have almost a puffy, balloon look to the back of their heads.

Bredli have a really chunky look to their's.

JM, I'm tempted to Jewel to the former Wallace cage.

That cage would be exceptional for a Bredli once mature. They have a huge climate variation in their natural habitat and I could really mimic something like that in a big cage.

That said,,,,,, OOOOhh what a female Suri would like in there once grown.

Had the new kid out for maybe 2 minutes, didn’t want to stress her out. A tad flighty but no blood shed. I think she may have bit the sleeve of my shirt but I couldn’t see her head to be sure.

It's fun watching them grow. Yafe is really starting to get the beefier adult CP head now.

Keep up the gentle handling and she will get there.

    P.S. Sleeves don't count :).

    Thanks, Dakski!

She’s going to be impressive with some size. Her head is already fairly beefy for being a few months from her 2nd birthday. Very intense looking eyes too.

I know she’s likely to calm with gentle handling and working with her over time. The worst part of being bitten isn’t even the bite, it’s the suspense of knowing when it’s about to happen haha.

That’s exactly why I wore long sleeves just now. I knew she’d be more likely to tag the fabric than go all the way for my forearm. I anticipate some blood donations in the future but that’s to be expected with a baby carpet, especially one whose lineage isn’t terribly far removed from the wild.

I like what I see. I'll bet she settles quickly and ends up being a favorite.

Aussie snakes really have what I would call a personality, over almost any other species. My opinion, based on limited experience, but still, from what I see, I'm more convinced over time.

Couple more minutes of gentle interaction. Using her perch as a handling apparatus so she feels more comfortable. No bites but still a tad twitchy/nervous and likes to move a lot and quickly.

Been using Gio’s “acclimation branch” technique to get this girl calmed down and it’s working pretty well.

Hook her out of her tub, place on perch, and let her cruise around until she fully leaves the perch for my arms. Then let her crawl for another minute or so and put her back.

Trying to let her get used to me on her terms, she’s not real fond of immediate and direct hands on contact right out of the tub.

Also, think I’ve settled on Charlotte Marie or “Charli Mae” for short. Split the difference between Ricky and Ziggys votes [emoji6]

Thanks y’all! Really happy I finally got into Aussie snakes after all my years of keeping.

Craig, can’t say you’d go wrong with a coastal carpet. But also think you’d have a great time with a boa. Something mesmerizing about a heavy bodied, slow moving, larger constrictor that’s hard to beat.

This is actually why you need at least one of each.

My boa is awesome. Had I had the patience for a very young animal I may have held off for a Poki.

But who's to say that Poki litter is a sure thing? If it is, I'll be weeping when they are delivered.

There are 2 left on the list, and unless one here dies, I'll never get either of them.

Family comes first and my latest addition is the end.

From my limited, but involved experience, I find carpets more active than boas and a tad more arboreal depending on the boa.

Handling is a tie, and maybe an edge to the boa because of what JM said.

    Thick and heavy!

    Carpets and Boas! My favorites.

    This Brisbane is perfect IMO.
