Which snake is the weirdest?
We've had the "which snake looks the most evil" and "which snake is the cutest" threads, but what about which snake is the weirdest?
I only recently discovered that the Arabian sand boa is a real animal and not just a crazy Photoshop job so that's what inspired this post.

So by "weirdest" snake, you're referring to appearance? I wasn't sure if you meant "behavior" or just what?
That Arabian sand boa is a pretty good contender, btw...those eyes look like they were glued on.
-
Both appearance and behaviour count! I want to learn about all the weird snakes haha

I'd vote for this guy (Rhino rat snake, pic borrowed from recent "Long Boi" thread in general colubrids category). I think they look like
the cross between a snake & a unicorn, lol.

Following on from the above :)
I’d say that Rhino nosed Rat snakes are quite possibly THE perfect snake .. they start off as tiny GREY worms and in twelve months they’re two foot long GREEN godlike snakes :)
Great display snakes that are active seemingly 24/7 .. good to handle , slow moving and placid , great appetite, spend a decent chunk of time climbing and resting in branches and the rest under water !
Mine actually ate underwater more often than not !!

Dragon snake...
Iranian spider-tailed viper...

Is it true that dragon snakes aren't able to be kept in captivity successfully?

Sadly yes, that's what I've read too, but eventually someone may figure out how to?

Re: Which snake is the weirdest?
Weird, but adorable, are hognose. Love them, but don't keep them.

I remember seeing this guy in the "Long Boi" thread! I love his unicorn horn and how it has scales on it! Would be funny to see how these guys start their sheds and eat, does the horn get in the way? It looks like he told too many lies so his nose grew longer and longer like Pinocchio's
Also I found another snake species with a hilariously long "nose":

The Malagasy leaf-nosed snake!

Thanks for the info, that is so cool to know! You're really selling me on these snakes now haha, I may even look into getting one someday now.

Okay, I thought BPs had the cutest faces but I WAS WRONG, the dragon snake takes the cake:

Look at that cute "smile"! And they are really cool looking too, they really do look like dragons :)
Iranian spider-tailed vipers are super cool as well, very interesting tails for luring in prey:

I would assume that the Rhino rat snake starts his shed by loosening the skin around his mouth, as others do, but it must be a challenge to then get that prominent
snoot completely peeled? That Malagasy leaf-nosed snake is another unique-looking snake. I keep a Texas longnose snake but his nose is nowhere
near as long or pointed as all the ones above. (but he's a pretty tri-color, red, black & light yellow) I think those spider-tailed vipers are crazy
looking- otherwise it looks a lot like the sidewinders I used to keep, very similar coloration, just rougher scales & what a tail!

People have been figuring it out but they are certainly not easy:

Re: Which snake is the weirdest?
Is there any documentation on the function/use of these extended noses? I could assume its for burrowing or sensing, but would like to know if it's been investigated.

I’m honestly not sure although it’s very soft and bendy so nothing to do with burrowing..

Very interesting, I imagined them stiffer than that. I couldn't easily find any info on the reason for it online.

It's like a "runaway" egg tooth? :confusd: I wonder if they have unusually-tough eggs to get out of?
Or maybe they're evolving a rattle on the wrong end (their nose!)? Reminds me of that Far Side cartoon of a rattlesnake family...'mom' & 'dad' are on either side of 'junior' who persists in rattling his head instead of his tail, & the mom says to the dad "this is YOUR side of the family, you realize..." :D

On the weird looking side, both elephant trunk or tentacled snakes. I like aquatic snakes but too scared to try them yet.

Which snake is the weirdest?
My vote goes to the triangular prismed Cape File snakes .
They look incredible and feel even better when handled !!
Mine was very shy and retiring yet in the wild they prey regularly on other snakes, including cobras and puff adders !
The Cape file snake (M. capensis) of central Africa is one of the largest species. They apparently grow very large , very quickly in the wild as their main diet is listed as venomous snakes ! They’re totally harmless to humans yet will eat any other snakes they find plus lizards , toads and frogs !!

Re: Which snake is the weirdest?
That's so crazy, I can't imagine that there was no selective pressure for that "nose", can anyone confirm the flexibility/rigidity of it at hatch?
Maybe it is similar to the tentacle snake and has a mechanosensory function

Variable bush viper, stiletto snake, any of those snakes that have adapted to fly/glide are pretty darn different from the typical serpent.

So maybe it's like a caudal lure, only on the other end of the snake...to help attract prey right into their mouth!? :D

:rolleye2: It wasn't very clear, lol. I was pretty sure that the Rhinos don't eat mambas, but didn't feel like taking up the charge...
