new snake suggestions
so i have a 5’x2’x2’ enclosure available n i want something new as i only have a hognose but i have NO clue what to get [emoji854] i want something bigger (7’ max) but also something active and personable. BCIs have been a contender but they lack the active part, BRBs are another contender but arent as heavy bodied as id like, so im conflicted

i never really looked up adult pictures of BRBs but now that i have, they look like a good size. definitely a huge contender, just wish they had the more BCI style head

Another thing to consider is your location. Not all species are legal in all areas! I mention this because I was interested in a Retic until I found out they aren't allowed in my province. :(

im in florida, most anything ill get would be legal. the only things that have peaked my interest that i dont believe are legal are super dwarf retics, but im not too heartbroken over that!

You want something active & personable? Get a rat snake! My adult male Florida* rat snakes (about 11 years old att) are about 7', while the females stay shorter, especially when they lay infertile clutches every
year like my gals do. Forget the "BCI head"....or else just get a BCI. (*these are a blend of yellow, gulf hammock & probably some Everglades too- I'm their second owner, & never met the breeder, only got minimal
information from him when these were adopted & shipped to me)

I just picked up my Bredli girl a few months ago and wish I got into morellia a lot sooner. She's awesome. A male would definitely stay under 7' and most females will too.
She was well under $300 too.

Maybe a woma. They don’t get 7ft, my male was close to 5ft two molds ago, but they check out most of the other boxes you have. I have two one is a sweetheart. The other does the sneaky bite woma thing.

Fortunately, despite their crazy fangs, ETBs are about the least likely snake to bite you, even less so than balls, in my experience anyway.

Yea, they're super calm. You can grab right off the perch, not head shy, and you can get them for under $300. They definitely dont get near 7ft though.
Edit: though I should clarify, the ones for under $300 are probably field collected, so if you dont want to support that, youd probably need to pay more.

Re: new snake suggestions
I’d just go with a male Columbian boa or a Central American.

They’re active occasionally just typically at night. Honestly most snakes aren’t going to be overly “active”, especially large bodied snakes. My boa will cruise around his cage occasionally and they will utilize climbing areas if provided. You could get a colony of garters if you want something active haha
Also, boas are active when you have them out. They’re much more inquisitive than ball pythons imo

yeah i know colubrids are the way to go, i have wanted a garter colony for about a year now but wouldnt work well in this enclosure i dont think, due to their love for water and knack for escaping.
i have too many conflicts of interest honestly, i want something weighty, but something thats also active and fun to watch. its unfortunate that most boas and pythons are essentially pet rocks

I would go with a female carpet python. My male Bredli is very active, especially in the evening, and he loves to climb and perch. The only times I really don't see him are if he just ate and he's in his warm side hide digesting, or if he's in shed.

how bad is it to “tame” them? also just to double check – they get brighter with age right?

I don't know as I got my male as an adult. He's very easy to handle though. Babies can be nippy but no more so than BRB's or locality dwarf boas, or even some ball pythons.

Nah, ball pythons can be pet rocks but I wouldn’t consider my boa a pet rock. I have a Greek tortoise that’s definitely a glorified pet rock haha I mean snakes are reclusive creatures and honestly I think nearly every suggestion so far is probably going to seem like a pet rock to you. You’re going to have to find a diurnal species which might be kinda challenging. Also typically display type animals such as GTP’s aren’t great for handling. So it kinda comes down to if you want something large and impressive to pull out and show off/“play with” or something more active but hard/impossible to handle. I don’t know much about colubrids but maybe look into cribos.

They tend to be nippy as hatchlings, but tend to outgrow it quickly. My girl was no exception. She struck a lot a first, but within a handful of handling sessions she mellowed right out. She hasn't struck at all since probably the fourth time I handled her. She's curious and gentle while out now.
I don't know how carpets age, but Bredli get more of that orangey reddish color towards the head and a dark rich black towards the tail as they age.

My Bredli won't be my only species of Morelia for long. And based on what you're looking for for I think you'll be happy with a carpet or Bredli.
