    Cupcake progression thread
My daughters snake, which she named Cupcake. We rescued from the local shelter. We just got it yesterday, so we are letting it settle in. The shelter did not know the gender, but due to the size we think its a female. We will be taking her to the vet in the next couple of weeks to confirm. She had a very active first night, and has finally started resting in her hides this morning!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...385b4c154a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fa2068b5db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...366a7c2ccd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d0a8b840c0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4bfd0d019e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...419bfcb068.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ba4b360946.jpg

Congrats on your new noodle! I can't get over how cute she is, especially that sweet face. Cupcake is an adorable name and your daughter is very lucky to have the opportunity to have a snake as a pet, many parents would not be willing to let their kids keep reptiles. Glad to hear Cupcake is settling in. It looks like she actually rather enjoyed climbing on that temporary box hide you gave her initially haha

How old is your daughter? I got a ball python when I was 7 that I had until I was in my 20s. Even though I love snakes and started collecting again, I'd say I didn't have much of an emotional attachment to it because I got it when I was so young, so I wasn't giving the proper care that I could've been. Everyone is different though, so I'm certainly not naysaying or anything, just that you should encourage them bonding to facilitate a long lasting relationship.

Weighed her today, 847g. Shes still calm as can be, even with handling her a little early to weigh her

I would assume most people think my name just means I’m into dungeons and dragons. It actually just means dad and daughter. She wanted a snake, I love snakes so we got one. As with all critters, the shine has worn a bit on a young child but she still loves it calls it her baby and means well. So dad does the duty and I love it, we have fun and keeping our snake has definitely helped us bond. I hope the same for you and your daughter

Wonderful! That's a sign that she's feeling comfortable, not stressed, and that your husbandry is on point :)

Only thing im concerned about is that shes choosing to digest on the cool side. Have not once seen her use her warm side hide. I may take it back and get an identical one to the cool side. They only had one when i went last time so hopefully theyve restocked. I dont think she likes the warm side hide (other than to climb on)

It's normal for them to not immediately go to the warm side after eating (although some BPs will and that's also normal!) My BP sometimes hangs out on the cool side for 2-3 days before moving to the warm side to digest after eating. Also note that you won't always see them moving around so it's possible she does stay in the warm hide sometimes and you just haven't seen it yet.

They can be picky about which hide they prefer so having identical hides is a good idea, I would support you taking back the warm hide and replacing it with one the same as the other. If you haven't seen her using the warm side it might also be a good idea to double check your temperatures, what are the floor surface temperatures of the warm and cool sides, what's the ambient temperature, and what are you measuring temps with?

Also worth noting, i dont have a laser thermometer yet to check floor temps, its on my "to buy" list. Probes are the best ive got at the moment

I'd definitely move that to the top of the to buy list. They are the best way to know for sure your temps as thermostat and thermometer probes can be inaccurate. They also come in handy for checking temperatures of your feeder rodents!

Probably the best money i have spent on anything for my snake, especially since it was only about $8 bucks on Amazon!!

yeah it is on the top of my list, I just ran out of funds getting things set up, so I prioritized a thermostat over the laser thermometer.

That was my thinking lmao. As I said previously, this is really just a temporary set up until my taxes come in and I can get a pvc enclosure. I was just trying to meet basic needs until I'm able to improve it. I'm just proud of the girl for taking F/T so quickly, after being on live at the shelter!

Was looking restless in her enclosire so i brought her out for a bit!

Also took one of my hides back today and got one identical to my cool side hide, i think the warm side hide was too big, she refused to go in there lol. Good news is it was half the price of the one i had in there so they had to pay me for the hide lmao!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a1af706198.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...df6cd2922c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ea9d4615e4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c33e43026a.jpg
