Unexpected addition
Got a call yesterday about a rental house that had a “big snake” and fish left behind so I went over and grabbed them. They’d been in there at least a week alone. Turns out the snake is a bp that’s 370 grams of mostly stuck shed.

That’s the cage and how he looked when I got him, gave him a soak, some shed and the eye caps came off after that. Setup in a smaller tank with a new heat mat for now. It was open mouthed when I picked it up first but closed now so keeping an eye in case we need a vet trip. I’ll try feeding him this weekend once he’s more settled if all seems well.

He looks a lot better.
I hate it when people leave their pets behind when they move. If you move or get evicted it's not like you only get five minutes notice. There's no reason not to rehome your animals or at least turn them over to animal control.

I don't know about the fish, but it doesn't look like they knew how to take care of this guy, so unfortunately I'm not at all surprised this poor thing was left behind. Not saying it's right, but definitely not surprised. :(
When it comes to animal control, if they did turn it over, would this be a 'bad' enough case to press for animal abuse charges?
Either way, thank you so much for rescuing the BP and fish! I love his colours!

I just saw on reddit someone moved out and left their cat, and he climbed into the wall, and the neighbor rescued him. Hard to imagine the thought process.

I'm glad you took him and he looks a lot better! And amazing the fish survived that long with no care, too.

Re: Unexpected addition
There isn’t really animal control, and reptile care is not on their radar. I’d gotten a message last week from a friend of the owner, someone told her to contact me about the fish because he was going to flush them but I sent a text to him and never got an answer.
They were supposed to be evicted five months ago and who knows where they went. The one rental maintenance guy did my hardwood floors years ago and saw my snakes so that’s why I got called. Small town life. Now I have cichlids and another snake I guess.

That would depend on state laws and how well educated the ACO's are. Many don't understand reptile/exotic animal care and husbandry.

Yeah, that's really why I ask. I know here I have never heard of reptiles/exotics being dealt with by animal control and I've never heard of abuse charges pressed for them either. :/

I gave him another soak tonight after work, got a better look at him. I say him but really don’t know or care btw. He is really quite thin. I’ve got small mice for my Hognose so will offer those for a few weeks before I go to rats. I took the stuck shed off the end of his tail and he’s got some discoloration near his vent, not sure if old burn or what’s up with this.

Hmm, not sure what that is (in photo above)? Poor snake, I'm SO glad you've taken him in, & "in time". What a difference already, his eyes looked horrible & likely
felt as bad as they looked. What's wrong with people...? (-rhetorical question only)

This really made me think. I work for a sheriffs office as a dispatcher, and I'm going to get with our ACO supervisor and ask them some questions regarding how they handle reptile abuse cases. I don't think we've had one since I've worked here!

Please post what you find out, if you're allowed! I'd love to know what they're stance is.

Re: Unexpected addition
After a couple days of soaks I left him be, he was out in hunting mode the next night so I thawed a mouse and offered it, I had to reheat and offer again to get him to get it down but he grabbed it eagerly both times.
I only have the mice until my order comes this week but figure it’s better on his system anyways since I don’t know when he’s eaten last. I’ll feed him a few and make sure all systems are going well and then switch over. He soaked the cage playing in the water again so I threw him on the scale while cleaning, up 30 grams.

Offering adult f/t mice is appropriate for now. If he'll take them wet so much the better, it will help get him rehydrated.

Re: Unexpected addition
beautiful baby. Looks like some kind of axanthic? If so, probably wasn't the cheapest snake, (not what's important but still) if nothing else you would think they would at least want to take care of it for that reason... People can be so heartless. One of my cats we found outside in our neighborhood. She had a crease in her fur from a recently worn collar. We took her to the shelter to check for a chip and nothing. Tried really hard on social media to find her owner but no one came forward, even posted her pictures on all the "find my pet" type websites and nothing. My best guess is someone put her outside, removed her collar and then went on with their life. Their loss, she is a giant sweet cuddle bug and we love her to death.

Looking much nicer already!
Any update with the mouth open issue you had at the start? Do you think he will end up needing a vet visit?

Poor snake, my heart broke when I saw that crumpled eye and the sad enclosure in the first post. So glad to see that he is already looking much better and I hope he will make a full recovery with some TLC. Thanks for rescuing these animals :)
How is the fish doing?

Re: Unexpected addition
Everyone’s doing really well! I had to take my Hognose into the vet again so I brought the new bp too, she said don’t even worry about what’s left of that burn, it’s pretty well healed. The vet was a little curious at first, like why is this snake injured and so thin until I explained where he came from.
Hasn’t shown any sign of an RI since, did pass some pee and urates, he’s taken two mouse meals so far. A couple more and I’ll offer a small rat instead. He’s hungry and willing to eat but I don’t want to overload him too quickly.
The fish have learned I’m food giver and stopped hiding. I think I’m going to replumb my empty 135 gallon and make it theirs. For now they are in a spare 20 gallon in the reptile room.

Up 50 grams so far not that you can tell and passed urine/urates twice, very feisty little guy.

Re: Unexpected addition
I can’t imagine leaving a pet behind. It must take a special type of :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: to abandon an animal like that, basically sentencing them to a horrific death. Especially a snake that can’t get out of a cage. They can go so long without food that their suffering could last a very long time before succumbing to dehydration. I have 9 snakes and have a different relationship with each and every one. I couldn’t part with any of them, even my my derpy carmel albino that a shady breeder sold me. That damn snake doesn’t know up from down. But he eats like a champ, he sheds, he poops, and he is super friendly and amazingly beautiful. I named him “Jethro” because of his lack of book learnin’!

Re: Unexpected addition
Today! He's moved up to eating rats and had a shed although that went rough, maybe because he ate through it but I also worry he isn't drinking so I'm going to rearrange the cage and offer a lower dish. He takes wet feeders fine anyways and nothing a soak didn't mostly fix.

Just saw this thread after being off the forum for several months. What a lucky snake to have wound up in your care! He is looking phenomenal.

Re: Unexpected addition
He just shed out perfectly again, he's on small rats every other week now. Time to start shopping for his grown up cage. Kind of fun to have a young snake in the house again tbh.
