How common are Tub Rub injuries
I keep my Dumeril Boa in an AP 4ft cage. Have had him a couple years now. Recently I noticed a sore on his head. I sent a pic to a friend and he thought it looked like a rub. Told me to put triple antibiotic ointment on it and it would go away after a few sheds.

My concern is that there is nothing in the cage to rub on except possibly the Pro Products RHP but that seems unlikely.

Just wondered how common this sort of thing is. I've been keeping snakes for almost 10 years now and never had this happen.

    Thanks.

You don't say how old your boa is ?

If your males of breeding age then it's pretty common for there hormones to kick in and want to look for a mate. My males often go off food too and just roam constantly as if looking for food when actually there just looking for a mate, there's plenty of adult females in the room and my two motleys 5 and 3 have both been doing it since September , horny snakes hey
Snakes can make sores just from off the glass, the runners and even the rhp, it's like friction burn, pretty common as your friend already said put some cream on it, Ive used bettadine in the past
If if there arnt females present there natural body clock will still kick in

So there is nothing for me to do - just let him do his thing. I will keep an eye on the rub spot and keep putting ointment on it. How often should I apply the ointment?

Depends how bad it is, most will heal by them selves, but if it looks like it's become infected I'd get it checked by the vets,

Once a day should be fine, you may find them going into shed a little more often with a scar to try fix it

I wish I could post a pick but I can't seem to download the tapatalk app. the rub looks to be healing. It like a scab on his head now. It is a round circle on his head above his eye.

I got it. Here are are couple pics of his wound. These were taken before any ointment was applied. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c6ec0bb798.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...54b63b1965.jpg

Re: How common are Tub Rub injuries
I first realized it when I found a piece of stuck shed on his head. When I was trying to remove that - I saw the wound. This is the first time I've ever had one of my snakes get one of these. I hope he improves quickly.

What is that weird spot on the opposite side of his head. Looks like an open space without scales. Never notices that before either. Is that normal.

I have never seen any sores or injuries on him and inspect my snakes every day. It's a mystery for sure.

Ah right so you hadn't noticed it before, that's strange, I was wondering whether it was an old injury.
is there any thing that could of pinged a scale or two off a branch etc

Re: How common are Tub Rub injuries
No, he has no branches in his cage. He is in an AP 4ft cage with an RHP for heat, a water bowl, a few fake green plants. He is kept on Uline Kraft Paper.

I will keep up on ointment and hope he clears up. If not - off to the vet we go.
