day night lighting

I am using a zomed reptile bulb for day reg heat bulb and don't want to run the white light all the time. there are so many bad ones. im looking at a purple light or red isk which it better as long as it gives off heat lol

I was using Red night lights, read where snakes might be able to still see the light and switched to Ceramic Heat Emitters, Heat with No light.

My snakes are in a naturally light room so I use no white lights at all.

Ceramic heat emitter (CHE) is the way to go. Maintain heat through out day and night. BP doesn't need light so the ambient room light during the day to signify day vs night is plenty

CHE's are a good option for no light, but I've used many black or red incandescent light bulbs & my snakes* enjoy basking under them, no problem I can see?
*various rat snakes & a spotted Aussie python, all of which spend a lot of time on their branches.

Problem with CHE's is that I understand they wear out fast if you dim them, & they all throw out WAY too much heat to use the way I do...I don't want my snakes
to be roasted, plus that wastes energy. ALL my lights are on rheostats (lamp dimmers) & frequently adjusted by me as needed for their comfort. The wattage I'm
using is more like 20 watts, while the CHE's are mostly 50 or 100 watts (or so I've seen?). Something to consider...

I have used both the red and the black or moon light bulbs. I now prefer the 100 watt Zilla black light bulbs from Petco ( on thermostat ) The red is OK and I have one to use in a pinch if I didn't have a black light available, but I think they are brighter and do tend to scare the very young snakes I don't think they would bother an older very acclimated snake though. The red use to bother me when trying to sleep at night, going off and on. Never see the black light when trying to sleep. Yep snake is in my bedroom.

I have a CHE just sitting on my table to use if I had too but I just didn't think they heat as well but I used the 100 watt CHE (an 150 might heat well, too well) like Bogertophis said. I just prefer the black light. When they come on you can still see in but barely. And they don't bother snakes a bit. I personally prefer the night lights (black light best) over the CHE but to each his own on something like that. Moon light is pretty too but seemed to burn out faster than the Zilla black light bulbs.

I have one 80w on a dimmer switch and a 100w on a rheostat and got 5 years on my last che so milage may very and I have also heard some people get much shorter times from theres. I think it's the fluctuating output of a thermostat that kills them and a dimmer is constant till adjusted so less fluctuation. My thoughts at least.

any thoughts on the fluorescent type heat bulbs????? A

I use a spot light in my bearded dragon cage for a hot spot and it works fine. Usually lasts 2 years or so. It's on a timer so it shuts off at night.

Maybe I'm living under a rock, but I've never heard of a fluorescent light that's made to give off heat??? They normally stay quite cool...:confusd:

I don't use any light for my bps other than the natural light in the room.
