Genesis (2018 Hypo Blood) debut and progression thread!
After a few weeks of settling in and getting to know each other, I finally brought Genesis out for some photos! Forgive the blue bedspread, it started out as a regular handling session, haha.
He tends to look more burgundy or dark mahogany under the (rather subpar) fluorescent lighting of the room his tub is in, but in natural lighting, his reds really pop.

I also brought out one of his decorations to see if I could get some pictures of him climbing along its branches - but instead he just slithered inside it, then proceeded to play peek-a-boo with me for the next 5 minutes.

Pop! Goes the weasel! Or er, the boa.

I'm really enjoying this little fellow. Definitely a very distinct personality from my ball python duo. I also appreciate that I don't have to pick a god and pray every time feeding day rolls around, ha!

Genesis poking his head out of the decoration is so precious, that's gotta be one of my favourite boa photos of all time. He's such a cutie, looks very active and curious and that fiery colouring is a real head-turner. It's also nice to have a boa around when you keep BPs since they can snap up any refusals once they're grown up. What are the biggest differences you've noticed between him and your BPs so far?

Thanks so much, Richard! He's in blue now, so I'm eager to see how he looks after he's shed and fed again.

Haha, my heart fluttered when his little head poked up from the tree hollow, it was such a cute moment! (I may have made some very silly noises of adoration from behind my phone camera. Luckily there were no witnesses.)
I uh, also had an unforeseen moment of weakness at the reptile show I went to last weekend, so I now have two little boas. :O More on that once I have some photos for a proper post about the new kid. But so far, compared to Iggy and Rae, both boas are much more active explorers, faster-moving, eager eaters (of course), and seem to have no qualms with sleeping in an open corner ... or wedged along the top of the tub lid ... or on top of their decor ... or wherever. In terms of personality, the boas seem to have an overall more sharply "focused" demeanor. While the BPs are often content to just sit on my lap or in my hands in a cuddly little heap, the boas seem to be frequently locking onto an objective, even when they're just sitting still. Not as speedy or slippery as colubrids I've handled in the past, but they definitely sometimes act like they have places to go and people (or rodents?) to see.
I may have botched the order in which I purchased my snakes though, haha. Since boas grow much more slowly, it'll be quite a few more years before they can start assisting with the inevitable BP leftovers!

I totally would have done the same if I'd seen him do that, he's so adorable!
Oh my goodness, two boas?! That's awesome, congratulations on the new pick up! I can't wait to see the new baby.
It's very cool that your boa is more active and okay with sleeping out of his hide. I do wish Noodle would come out of his hide more often, but alas, he loves staying in his caves. Even when he's exploring outside of his enclosure the main thing he's focusing on his finding a new place to hide
Hearing about your boa me all the more tempted to get one eventually, haha. Looking forward to following your adventures with your new snake!

That is just so cute, what a stunning snake, I love the reds. The peekaboo pictures are so adorable. :)

Re: Genesis (2018 Hypo Blood) debut and progression thread!
Stunner. Really nice. I love my boas. As you said, great personalities.
Good luck and keep us in the loop on Genesis.

Haha, I feel you! Unless it's feeding day or if I'm actively bringing him out for photos, then I never see Iggy beyond, at most, his face poking out of his rock cave entrance, lol. Ravus is slightly more frequently visible, but mostly only because he comes out to pee and make a mess more often.

Thanks so much, Valyndris! Red is my favorite color, so this little guy hit me right in my weakness even before he tried his little peekaboo trick, haha!

Thanks so much, dakski. I remember reading through your thread for Behira, quite a while back before I was even seriously considering getting a boa myself, and thinking that she sounded like just the perfect snake to own.

Awww, that's awesome. Behira rocks. So does Feliz, my dwarf BCC.
I am glad Behira and her thread helped you decide to get into Boas. You will not be disappointed.
Good luck and keep us in the loop on your boas.

Gen's first shed with me was on 8/21/19, and went very smoothly. I had a chance to take pictures of him a couple days later; it was somewhat overcast and the lighting was suboptimal, but still, a handsome boy.

More recently, I was fortunate enough last week to be able to give him a brief jaunt in the sunlight, with some nice resultant photos. You can see a hint of his iridescence in some of the pictures, and I was particularly delighted by that tongue shot!

Thank you, Richard! I love all my snakes, but since the BPs are usually in their hides, and Q is so dark he sometimes blends into the shadows, I'd say Gen is the most fun to come home to - being a rich patch of red that stands out from wherever he happens to be sitting in his enclosure.

It really is so hard to get decent shots of the darker snakes as you say, so glad you having fun with the boas, they really are fun arnt they

What a gorgeous snake, he looks so shiny and healthy! Such a beautiful, rich red colour and he has some nice iridescence on his scales.

Re: Genesis (2018 Hypo Blood) debut and progression thread!
Such a handsome boy! Glad his first shed home went well.
Heh... one of Vin's hypo bloods was runner-up for "first snake" when I visited his table at White Plains a while back. I'm gonna be watching Genesis' thread to see how he develops. There's a chance I may be going back for one more boa a few years down the road... ;)
-
@Luvyna: Thank you! I'm not sure if it's just because he's young, but he kind of feels as "silky" as he looks.
@WrongPython: Adelita sounds like she's been an absolutely darling so far, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if you ended up with more boas in the not-so-distant future ... ;)

Second shed from Gen was on 10/24/19. I actually walked in on him in the middle of it, and hastily shuffled back out to give him his privacy. Here are a few photos from a couple days post-shed, including some face close-ups!

I LOVE red too, so I'm pretty sure there's been some "mistake" & this is supposed to be MY snake!? :D Alas, I fear I'll have to be content with just your amazing
photos...

Such a gorgeous boy, he really has some magnificent colours!

Thanks, guys! Haha, Bogertophis! I feel that way about many of the other amazing snakes I see posted on this forum, too.
-
Long-delayed update time! Gen is consistently even-tempered and lovely - probably the most elegant out of my current snakes.

I have the hardest time accurately capturing his colors on camera. I gave video a try too, but it didn't quite cut it either, especially with it being an uncooperatively cloudy day. He sure is cute when he pokes his nose into things, though: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NO...BjLTlupPm2o--0

Bogertophis - Haha, I did back off a bit with the camera when he first assumed that position! But then he seemed quite content to just stay that way, and generally he's one of my most even-tempered snakes, so I decided to graciously accept his offer of a cool-looking pose. :D
And thank you, Richard! This is probably the closest I've come (so far) to getting his colors photographed accurately compared to how he looks in person.

Re: Genesis (2018 Hypo Blood) debut and progression thread!
Wow, he's a stunner too.
Your Trio of BI's are incredible. You have amazing taste in Boas!

Thank you so much, Dave! Though to be fair, it's hard to have "bad" taste in boas when there are so many incredible ones to choose from, haha. I'm really determined to just stick with my trio (plus my two BPs), but every so often, I'll see a snake that really makes my resolve waver!

Looking can be very dangerous- you're only human. :D
-
In my quest to document all of my snakes at their ugliest (haha), I hauled poor Gen out during his most recent shed cycle, too. Despite probably not being able to see much of anything, he was a very good sport about it.

https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...dczO4N-A=w2400
He even poked his head out from the top, the same way he did 2 years ago, in the very first set of pictures I took of him to start off this thread! That definitely made me smile.

Gen never managed to be ugly in shed- it was very cool how his eyes matched the rock.
-
Thank you, Richard and Bogertophis! The grey eyes matching the rock part of the decor was entirely unintentional, haha. And the "ugly" is relative, of course - just very dark and muted compared to his usual self. I have some post-shed pictures of his colors in indirect daylight as well, so those will be forthcoming once I'm done sorting through them.
