    New RTB
    48"W x 23"D x 30"H

Is this big enough for a RTB, when it is full grown? I have been eyeballing one in town for several weeks now and would like to get it. I am positive I can meet its needs pretty easily. I am just going to handle it before I make the purchase to check its temperment.

Well as Becky knows, our family is all madly in love with columbian boas now after these past months with Rauri! What a great large but not massive snake he is.

Do you know if this RTB is a male or female? How old and big is it now? You might want to start it in something smaller depending on it's current needs.

    What the ...?

Ok, anyways, 36" is just a baby. Probably born this year. If it isn't a calm and gentle boa the chances are it will be. They easily settle in. Babies can be a little nippy though, so don't let that change your mindset. Male boas can be really skittish when they are young, but they will usually settle in with time. Once you start down the boa track it's hard to go back :)

    Re: New RTB
He is asking $150 for it. I am willing to guess it's a male, cause if it was a female he would probably ask for more.

That .357 Magnum ain't no childs toy. It holds 8 shots, has an 8 in" Mangum ported barrel and will crack an engine block. That fine piece of steel cost me $375 used, and worth every penny. I am thinking of putting a scope on it and using it for deer season next year. If you want a starter gun go with a 9MM, a .357 can knock you on your rear, rip your arm off, knock you out or worse. That .357 is a mans gun, or possibly a very tough lady.
I also have a guns page on my website. Guns are my other passion. I have 18 in all including 4 WWII Military rifles not listed there.

    I really want that RTB.

You just confused the living crap out of me mixing guns and snakes in the same post, but hey that's life.

A normal snake usually goes for the same amount and doesn't matter on the sex. 150.00 is a lot for a Columbian RTB, but a good price for a BCI. What kind is it?

    Re: New RTB
$150 is pricey.. male, female.. doesn't matter.

Neonate CBB usually run $75 for a colombian.

If the snake has a very clean pattern or pink/red color etc, that may explain it, or it could just be typical pet store overpricing.

All I know is he has RTB written on the glass. He raises a few snakes him self, I am going to talk to him more this week about the snake. This is the guy who runs my favorite pet store in town. I will see if he will let me take a pic of it.

Shelby, I borrowed this from another thread. In one of my longings over the RTB I am looking at, I noticed this. I really thought it was cool, one of the things I like about it.

My wife and I are plaining on trying to have a baby soon would it be a bad choice to get a RTB and I live in an apartment right now. Or should i go with a carpet? i want another snake that is easy to care for but not a childs snake so to say.

    Re: New RTB
You could have either a rtb or carpet if you have a baby, just use common sense! RTBs tame quicker and easier than carpets, and are actually more kid friendly generally.

Jim - yes, many BCC have widow's peaks, and most bci don't, but many peruvian and surinam BCC do not have widow's peaks, and I have seen colombian BCI that do. In fact my hogg island boa has a few small widow's peaks.

Just my two cents as a parent of 4 here...take it as you like. I've always tried to not get any sort of new pet in the house during the time I was heavily pregnant or just delivered. Babies are incredibely high maintenance and tiring and it just ends up with the pet suffering your lack of energy during those last months of pregnancy and first months of new parenthood.

I decided to go with a BCI. I did a lot of research and would prefer a smaller snake with a better temperment. I am going to get one direct from a breeder though. All the pet stores in town claim thier RTBs are nippy. I am going to go with a 2-3 yr old snake. I did some research on Fauna and think I found a breeder I would like to do business with.

    Lars,

Any suggestions who you're in touch with? No one in MY local area have RTBs avail. so I too am looking at breeders, but being still new in the herp world, I'm still learing who and who not for networking.

    Ideas are appreciated!

    Thanks!

    RuLyn

BTW: Got my new stripe baby < FINALLY! > Now we need to come up with a name. FD suggested Tom Thumb since he's soooooo small (only about 3 mo. old) but I reminded her he won't stay that way for long! & the seller said to try starting fuzzy rats. Huh? I thought you DIDN'T want to go as big or bigger than their thickest girth.
    Jeez!

    http://clearwaterreptiles.tripod.com/

I emailed this guy. He has a good rep on fauna classifieds. Only on negative thing, but that was about a snake he bought and arrived to him dead. He then sold a similar looking snake on a board and someone said he sold the snake she had shipped him and he claimed was dead. The snakes were similiar but not the same in my opinion. I read the thread and it didn't seem he was really at fault in my opinion. I am also open to other breeders of BCI if anyone here has any suggestions. I am not all to impressed with things in my local area all the time. So I decided to go on the net and look, its just that all the horror stories scare me. I am trying to do reseach and make the best informed decision that I can. I did check out a sub adult BP in town this past week, but his eye caps were bad and he was nippy. I am thinking I probably won't buy another snake from a pet store. My next BP will be from Adam probably.

Clay's breeding some sweet pastels and albinos right at the moment. I'm sure he'll have some beautiful litters come spring/summer time, if you want to wait that long. Also, if you guys don't want to do the auction thing, for a just another $20 bucks or so, you can buy the snakes straight out.

I bid $60 on a HO male. I can't wait to get him. He's going to be awesome. I am just loving being able to learn about all the herps I got. I also love the time we spend together as a family working with them and learning together. When I bought Salina I had no idea the doors it would open for my family as a whole. My oldest son is even reading more to learn about them, I have tried everything with him to get him reading more.

    Lars,

The date of birth is April 23 2005. You will get complete feeding and shedding records with your boa.

Also an important note to remember is I cannot ship when the night-time temperatures are below freezing. I like the temps to be at least 40 degrees the night of shipping.

Now that I have your zip code I will monitor the temperatures in your area. I know your weather gets much colder much sooner than we do, so we will have to watch it very closely. I will not do anything that can jeopardize the boas health.

I know you are excited.. I know you want your baby, but we need to ensure the 100% safe arrival of your boa.

    Thanks again.

    Clay English

North Dakota is VERY COLD. The fact that it is only 23F right now is astonishing, this is a heat wave. I feel like a retard for not researching shipping requirements. My son is going to be as heartbroke as I am, all of my kids will be.

    Re: New RTB
Congrats Lars on the lovely snake! I know it must be hard for you and your family (especially your son) to wait for the weather to co-operate for the safe shipping of this snake. Think how upset though you all would be to receive a dead or dying snake that was shipping improperly by a less than concerned breeder. Sounds like Clay is not only looking out for the snake but for your investment in it as well and it will certainly be beautifully cared for while it stays in his facility I'm sure.

Wonderful to hear your son is doing more reading! Our snakes have opened up so many things for our family as a shared hobby. Perhaps you and your son could spend the time learning more lots about these fascinating creatures and planning out it's new home. Depending on his age he might even be able to do a classroom presentation about the new snake to help him feel involved.

What did all our granny's used to say..."all good things come to those that wait"...dang old ladies are smart! LOL

    HI,
Sorry about the temp thing, the really good is all his boa's are fed fresh thawed, I have female sister of your male that takes a fuzzie off the floor no effort, this really make keepin a breeze, hey what happens if you loose power in your neck of the woods, do you have a back up plan,.
I lost power a couple years ago with a hurricain it didn't bother the snakes I really hated the heat, and that genrator was about 10 bucks a day to run..
    to keep my feeder frozen.
your snake will improve with every shed and will really pop at age 2. I have one of the brothers coming too if the weather is good.
Most commons will darken as they age not CLays pastels, and if you breed this one he will have some awsome babies. you better get a female on lay away..
    hehe

I got about 20 heat packs from Walmart. We have lost power for as long as 8 hrs at a time. I am thinking I might have to wait until spring to get this baby. I have e-mailed clay back and forth several times, he is very good to work with. I guess the good thing is that I wanted a bigger meatier snake and by the time he gets here he should be that way.

These pics are ones Clay Enlish had posted on his auction. I bought this snake from him and will have it shipped when it warms up. It is a male High Orange BCI. I do not think it is a Hogg Island of any sort. A few people more familiar with Clay's snakes will know more about that than me. I got him for $60 + $40 for shipping.

He's got some really nice orange there, but I don't think he'll look like my HIB. Most likely he will be quite a bit darker, but he may have some salmon-ish coloration as an adult.
