What to add to my collection.
So... In October I am going to a reptile expo in Tuscon. I have been mulling over what I am going to pick up. At this point I don't want to breed. I have adequate caging for any of these options.

That's really 100% up to you. You'll be caring for the animal for the next 20 years or more.

I'm just looking to see what everybody would add out of these options. I'm just curious

I mean, if it were me, and solely my decision, I'd go sunglow. But that's me and what would make a good addition to my snake family.
I already have BPs, a Hognose and a KSB, plus a Borneo STP. The Dum would be my 2nd choice.

Right now I'm leaning towards the dum and a female for either of my males.

Well, you did say you didn't plan to breed att...that's partly why I chose the Dum. You know that if you get a mate for one of your snakes, you are probably "sealing
your fate" about breeding. It's fun, but it's lots of work & $ too...consider now if you really want that temptation. Some people find that their male snakes start
rubbing their noses when they smell the female snake of their dreams nearby in mating season too, so there are drawbacks.

Besides that, I've always thought Dumerils boas are awesome. :snake: (totally up to you though, you gotta live with your choices)

I love the looks of Dumerils. And I keep going back and forth about breeding. More leaning on no than yes. I have been really looking at the BEL Ball Pythons. I love BELs. Then again theres always the albino hognose, and the scaleless corn. Lol its hard to decide. I like each of these options pretty much equally. It will probably boil down to what is available at the Expo.

It doesn't hurt to stay flexible...one of these options may really 'call out to you' at the show...I think your heart will take over. ;)

If I had to pick one it would be the Dum. I love Boas, but I’m not into morphs, hence passing on the Sunglow. And I’ve always loved the paint job that Nature gave to the Dums.

My second pic would be a Blood or STP, again due to their beautiful patterns.

Just keep researching and enjoy the posts here with pics and the decision will become much easier when the time comes.

If u don’t have a hognose yet I’d 100% get one of those.

Also so if you want two snakes, u can get a normal hognose for under $100 and then get a blood or whatever as well!!!

I can't make a choice on your options because 1. I have a Dum already and 2. Not interested at all in the other species. Did the research, seen them in person, they are either too big/heavy for me, don't want another royal or just meh.

I can tell you that Dumerils boa is a purchase I never regretted, if I were to have any regrets at all (besides the bp). Beauty, great disposition and not too big as the other boas. I may even go into breeding because there are not many Dum boa breeders out there. Those who want one always have difficulty finding one. Those who don't care or know about them may remain ignorant because the expos are flooded with the more popular ball pythons and BCC and BCI. Who wants a boa that has no morph; takes 5+ years to mature and maybe breed; and potentially be a picky eater like ball pythons? If you like that about them, don't hesitate and go for it.

If you're not planning on breeding your snakes I'd shoot for adding diversity to the collection. Out of the choices you listed I'd go with a hognose. Apart from those options I'd pick a kingsnake or carpet python.

Re: What to add to my collection.
Thank you for the replies. It gives me alot to think about. I know my girlfriend prefers the dumerils. She isnt too keen on having a venomous snake, even though I explained the disposition of the hognose, and their toxicity. In the end I may do a dumerils and a hog nose. My local pet shop is talking about getting in some dumerils in a few weeks. I'm going to wait until the reptile expo in october to actually pull the trigger.

Plus I have to convince the girlfriend about the hognose. I'm hoping that if I can get her to hold one that she will warm up to the idea.

If you're looking for a pet you can't go wrong with a male Dumerils boa. They don't get too big and they're docile.

Idk what you already have but so far my favorite snake species I’ve had is my BCI boa by a mile. I’d also love to add a blood, dumerils or false water cobra eventually. There are even more options for lizards which makes picking a starting place hard. My “coolest” lizard is my leachie but they definitely aren’t for everyone. I really want a northern bts eventually though. I’d check out Clint’s Reptiles on YouTube for overviews on potential options.

Right now its up to Dumerils, Hognose, or a BEL Ball. Its funny cause that was what I was leaning towards.

If you've narrowed it down to your top 3 and your S/O doesn't like hoggies. I'd go with the Dumerils. It's a win/win.

Hognose are tons of fun packed into some little bodies (especially males) but if your girl is uncomfortable it's best to respect her comfort level.

Although Hognose almost never actually strike (they bluff strike, mouth closed) and their delivery system is horrible (rear ranges, would basically have to latch on and chew for any actual venom delivery) it's probably best to err on the side of caution.

I agree with the general sentiment of respecting your girlfriend's wishes if she's really not comfortable with a hognose. With that said ... if you think she has room to be convinced, I can think of some helpfully endearing "ambassadors." ;)

One of them is a little hoggie named Pissy, belonging to Exotics Lair on Youtube, who lives up to his name but really can't walk the walk to match the talk, LOL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rlp4tSISnfE

Another is pretty much any video of a hognose melodramatically and insistently playing dead. Sometimes with voice-acting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-J0nwZz_fo

I will talk with her again and see if I can get the Hoggy. If its still no I will go for the Dumerils. Thanks everyone. :)
