Peeking in...
How is everyone ? I've had some crazy busy times, as usual in summer. Only, this year it started early!
However, it seems that things have already calmed down somewhat, so I may drop in more often :)
Have you all forgotten me already ? LOL :P
-
I wondered why you stopped posting...I'm sure I'm not the only one that missed you 'round here. Welcome "back"!

Now that your hibernation period is over... does that mean updated photos of everyone? Happy you are back.

It's tough to stay active in all the different platforms. How have you been? I still remember the old days of all the late night group chat sessions. Not many active from back then.

Truthfully, this year is just brutal with the heat and humidity. And the pop up storms are crazy!

For real. Seems like every day there’s a torrential downpour every afternoon just long enough to spike the humidity and make the heat feel unbearable. I’ll take these Mississippi summers over central New York winters anytime though

Had another crazy downpour today while at the barn. Seemed to come on without a warning. The sky looked dark, but it does that almost every afternoon. It just came down hard while I had my horse tied and it spooked her because it seemed so violent. Huge fat drops just shooting down.
It didn't even barely cool it down, though. Afterward the sun came out and it got to be pretty much unbearable. I was standing in the shade while she grazed and I was having sweat rolling down my body nonstop, disgusting!
My horse also has "anhidrosis" which is the inability to sweat when the heat and humidity spikes. It can cause dangerous overheating.
So I'm constantly doing this (pics per game cam) :
http://photos.imageevent.com/morgens...89590272_o.jpg
http://photos.imageevent.com/morgens...59626240_o.jpg
trying to cool her down.
Also have fans running in her stall and installed a mister system in her paddock. Without all this I don't think she would still be alive. We have had heat indexes around 108 and 110. I can take "dry" heat but its the humidity that is killing me.
Even the beaches around here now have advisories for bacteria, the water is just to hot and everything around there is hot and wet, perfect breeding ground, yuck!
And of course now more and more storms are brewing, just hoping the hurricane season won't be as bad. Or the tornadoes. Which are now pretty much year round. Had our first on early February for crying out loud!
But enough complaining :P:D
On a better note, for the first time in my life I won something. I didn't expect to win, not in a million years. I don't even know why I bought the ticket. To prove to myself that I never win? I was bored ? ( I know, stupid thing to do...) People buy several tickets to up their chances to win, I bought one single one for $5 and promptly forgot about the whole thing. Until I got an email saying I won and I about had a heart attack, LOL.
Um, so I won a Bearded Dragon I admired on facebook.
I blame my nephew. He is crazy about them and while he was visiting I helped him with research, and to find a good breeder in Germany. Also joined some BD facebook groups to show him pictures.
After my sis and her family left, this beautiful colored dragon popped up on my news feed and it said "raffle, $5 per ticket".
I never win, but I know, I know. Murphy's law. But still, you could have knocked me over with a feather.
So my nephew who is as excited as can be is getting his dragon in Germany on thursday. A beautiful all white one.
Um, and I'm getting a Dragon on thursday here in the states. A beautiful yellow one. It's been a mad scramble to get all the supplies together since finding out I won!
So, why can't I win the lottery? :)

You may have just cashed in your winner for the decade...but the next decade is just around the corner ;)
My barber has an extra tank at the shop and occasionally brings his yellow bearded dragon in to work for the day...although I haven't seen him visiting on my recent haircut days. Looking forward to a pic of your new arrival

Congrats on winning a beardie, they're really cute & personable pets, though a little bit labor intensive (compared to snakes).
I'm in the hot, humid soggy mid-South...so far this year we've had nearly 43" of rain, and our average yearly rainfall is about 45-46"!!! :O WT...?
Horses are pretty awesome pals, but I don't envy you taking care of a horse in this weather. My solution is to swim all summer, but might not work with a horse? :D
-
We'll happily take some of that rain off your hands in AZ lol! So hot out our dog would rather stay in!
-
Congrats on your win! That’s pretty cool that you and your nephew are getting BDs on the same day and across the globe from one another.
Sorry to hear about your horse with the anhidrosis. I can somewhat relate. I had some brain damage from a waterskiing crash off the jump ramp many years ago. For 30 years I didn’t sweat from the waist up. It was quite embarrassing in the business world whenever I came in from outside during the summer and my pants were drenched, but not my shirt. Now I sweat about half as much in the upper body.
Good to know that your horse has YOU as an owner. :) That must be a lot if extra work keeping her cool. Have you thought about buying her a swimming pool too ? :D

Hm. You may be on to something, LOL. But that might be a little out of the price range. So she will have to do with all the fans and the mister system I've installed. :)
I didn't realize that humans can get anhidrosis, but I guess its quite possible. How odd that you only got it in half of your body. It is still not 100% understood in the horse world but it seems to have to do with horses being in extreme heat AND humidity. So..often in the south east. The sweat glands just stop working when it gets hot and humid. Which it does half the year here. She sweats just fine in the winter.
So yes, I won a Beardie !! LOL. And yes, SO SO SO much more work then the snake OR a crested gecko. I already knew that, but its been so long that I had a beardie, I almost forgot..
He sure is a funny one, though. 7 month old, 200 gr. Quite big already. :)
I would LOVE to live in AZ. I can take the dry heat all the day, its the humidity that gets to me. And Boger, yes, its not easy doing anything labor intensive in this intense heat/humidity. And there is a lot of hard work when it comes to horses. But she is worth it, her and I go together, LOL.

Seems every place has it's downsides...I sometimes miss the So. Calif. desert, dry heat & all, but no rain :( with wildfires & earthquakes. I wanted a change so I traded
all that for plenty of precipitation, stifling humidity, ice storms & tornadoes...:rolleye2: (oops!)

Ok, I still want to move, though. I wish I could live in the mountains of Albuquerque. I even look at realtor.com and dream which house I would pick. Its beautiful there. I have always had a thing for WIDE OPEN spaces, endless blue skies, and the arid but gorgeous desert mountains. The sky must be gorgeous at night, can you imagine all those stars. Can you imaging driving down endless roads , looking over this gorgeous landscape.
I have never been a fan of wood areas, or wood covered mountains. To dark, to enclosed, to stifling. Like a horror movie. I love wide open, I love dry, I love dry heat. It doesn't have to be extremely hot, but I also def. don't want to go where it gets ice cold and snowing half the year.
So yeah, New Mexico sounds good to me.
These summers here in the south east are just miserable. Esp. for a person that loves to be outdoors. Between this hot heat and bugs, ugh. You can just stand around after doing a bit of work outside and you are absolutely drenched. Sweat just literally rolling down the body while resting in the shade. Its just terrible.
I lived in El Paso , TX for over a year. While the city itself is pretty terrible, I will never forget waking up and looking outside the window at those gorgeous mountains and endless, absolutely endless blue sky. It was like waking up in a beautiful dream. I think I belong in a landscape such as that..

I do miss the wide open spaces of the desert...I could see for miles & miles from my former house in So Cal...the view (also night sky) was awesome. I miss being able to sit out at night in my hammock as the day cools off. Here in the mid-South, even IF it cools off enough the mosquitoes will eat you alive sitting out. Funny you mention New Mexico...I almost moved there instead of here, & sorta wish I had. Still might...;) I love the rain here & the green but everything grows so darn much, the yard work is endless & it's not how I want to spend my time. I even miss the coyotes howling in the desert nearby.

Well, maybe we will both end up there !!! Would be nice to have a friend with common interests and a love for that area. I loved nothing more then to hike for hours through that landscape. Something so wild and beautiful about it. And the openness !!! It makes me feel like I can breathe!!

Nope, Unfortunately NY, Mass, NH, CT have all been having short summer seasons over the years. It didn’t even get warm or stop raining until the 3rd week of JUNE!!! 2 months of Rain and 50-68 degrees right through May into June.
It always cools down mid Aug, by September its 60’s and 72 is a special occasion:(

Well, it looks like I'll be even more absent then usually.
My mom had a stroke. I can only now talk about this, even though it happened 3 weeks ago. The only reason I even talk about it is that she is doing exceptionally well.
My mother lives overseas in Germany, where I am from. And she was just visiting here (like she does every year) with my brother, only a few months ago. When I got that phone call, I can't even describe. I felt 10 years old again and absolutely unable to go on without my mother. I lost my father in my early twenties. It doesn't matter how old you get, loosing a parent, or both, still makes you feel like a boat afloat on the ocean.
It doesn't help that I'm far away from home, no way to get there fast.
My brother and sister kept me up to date the whole time, I even got to talk to my mom that very day, and they sent videos. She is doing well, she was even then. Speaks normally and only a slight stiffness in left arm/hand and left leg. She can move them, but lost some of the fine motor skills. Doctors said she should recover completely. They (and her) told me NOT to come since visitors were only allowed once the day and only 15 minutes. Only one person. I would have hardly got to see her. She was moved into rehab and did great. Walks without a walker now (carefully) and is even back to knitting. Today she is going home, to stay with my sister for a few weeks before going back to her condo.
I was promised I would get a call immediately if things get worse, but to wait until I can spend a lot of time with my mom, when she is back home.
I kept getting updates, and during those I felt great, but as soon as I hung up the phone my brain would go into overdrive. Imagining things, worrying about every little thing, if she sounded tired, "different" and so on and so forth. So for now its planned that I go in October, since my sister has a vacation planned and it would give me time alone with mom and able to help out when needed. Of course if anything is amiss , I will go immediately.
When I'm stressed I shut down. I don't want to talk to anyone, or even be around anyone. I withdraw. So that's what I did. I am slowly feeling better about everything and less on edge, I stopped waiting for "the other shoe to drop" at any second and I'm back to sleeping better.
Ax01, thank you for your support and your crazy idea of turning me into a mod, but I don't feel I'm here consistently enough to really help out the mods and admin. They need people that can commit more time. But I do appreciate it :)
So, I'll be back popping in here and there, but probably not as much as I'd like to. I often leave the computer on and myself logged in when I leave the house, so I can remember to check in when I get back.
Thank you to all that remember me , "I'll be back" !!!!! (in my best German accent voice...)
-
Thanks so much for keeping us in the loop & I wish nothing but the best for your mom's full recovery. I know what you mean, it's so hard when you're so far away,
and we only get one "mom", so they're truly precious & irreplaceable. We'll forgive you in advance for your likely absences, but do pop in when you get the chance.

It’s funny how we’re all so different ..
I’ve spent my whole life in one small town on the outskirts of Manchester , England.. weather is unsettled as default .. very little sun , rather a lot of rain due to the nearby Pennines a range of mountains and hills separating the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire . Counties are out versions of your States I suppose .
Anyways I’ve spent my whole life on the edge of the countryside never more than a 60 second jog from fields , hills , streams and lodges ( our tiny version of your lakes) .
All our holidays and trips out are at the seaside ( we live in the middle of our little island ) and I always feel happy and elated when I’m overlooking the sea or a beautiful harbour with boats bobbing around and the cries of seagulls overhead.
Anyways.... for the last 40 years I’ve dreamt of spending my days on the Greek coast .. in a busy bustling little town / village full of those beautiful small white houses . I’d have one overlooking the beautiful turquoise sea .
The grass is always greener , I guess

I've lived all over during my military career...was fortunate to end up where I wanted at the end of it. I think I can say that I found things to like at each of the various places I lived that made them special and will remember them for that. Really kind of hard to have it all and keep multiple places and bounce between them all...would have to win that Powerball...
All the moves also meant not being close to family. I'm glad to have had my brothers back in Wisconsin to be close enough to help out my parents in time of need. Zina, I'm glad your Mom is on the road to recovery...hopefully this small delay will give you time to plan and make the coming visit that much more special!

Thank you so much. I realize how very lucky we are that she is doing so well. So many others don't get second chances, and I am so very sorry about that. Today I booked my flight, going home in October. Its later then I was hoping for, but I will be helping out my sister and my mother by coming during that time. If anything happens, I will go sooner of course.
But I do have this to look forward to.
I can't imagine how terrible it must be to get these news and there is nothing that can be done anymore..

I hope the time passes quickly for you until October and that she continues doing well. :grouphug:
