    Thinking about getting a burm
Hi I have 2 ball pythons and was thinking about getting a burm. I really like the albinos. My questions are: what should the temps and humidity level be for a neonate? ( I know there is a caresheet but I read all over and see different answers). Next what should I use for heat? some people use radiant heat panels but I fing them to be to expensive. Can I use flexwatt when it is an adult? also do they need uva lighting? If someone can post pics of their adults and or cages I would appreciate that.

A burm is a poor choice for a second species.. they get BIG.. FAST! Even a male can be 100lbs and 13'!

If you want something bigger, consider a red tail.

Red tails are not that expensive for normals , but albinos arent so cheap.

Just because an albino burm is cheap, is not a good reason to buy one.

How long have you been keeping your BPs?

Another BP is a fine choice, red tails and bloods are a much more reasonable step up from BPs.

Redtails are awsome:) And yes you can use flexwatt with any snake at any size...

Re: Thinking about getting a burm
BCI are more common, easier to care for (smaller and aren't as demanding of husbandry requirements) and less expensive.

Surinam is BCC.. colombian is BCI. Hogg island boas are also BCI (I recommend these guys! they're so cool!)

A captive bred colombian boa is around $75, more for an extra nice looking one.

CB hogg islands are usually around $150-200+

BCC are the most at $200 (low end) up to $600 or more.

Who is going to pay to feed the snake? Adult BCI are going to need rabbits for food.. it isn't cheap. Buying the animal is often the least expensive part.

thats not true, not all BCIs will get big enough to eat rabbits or need them. nto even females. you can keep a BCI on the largest size rat.

I would think a 9' snake is pushing the limits of rats.

I suppose a male would be fine with big rats.

Even so, jumbo rats aren't cheap (esp for a young person with no job!)

We have 9' females (holy crap are they HUGE) that do great on large/jumbo rats. Boas don't have a mega-metabolism & do beautifully on big rats.

Very, very, very true!!! Especially if there's no local source & you have to have them shipped. Fuel surcharges SUCK! :P

Well, I'm glad my dum can eat jumbo rats and not rabbits.. I assume a dum would have similar metabolism as a red tail.

I can't avoid the rabbits with the male burm though.. lol.

Yeah...Dumeril's boas are just as fuel efficient on rats as anything else, and rats are cheaper!!! They don't need to be fed gigantic meals to thrive (same goes for redtails - there are just SO many obese snakes in captivity!).

Male Burm...rabbits...yep! Guinea pigs work well too & can be much more cost effective.

I don't really know how to tell an obese snake from a big one.

I thought guinea pigs were fatty or something (I know probably just another groundless myth). I wonder how the piggies can be cheaper when they reproduce much slower than rabbits..

I am breeding rats and mice for food. It wont be a problem because when it needs rats I will have right size available and if I dont have any available then I will buy them because in about 3 months I will have a job. Matt if you through with the deal with the 4.4 for supplies will you be selling any of the hoggs? How much for males and females? whats the best price you can give also I hae some snakes to trade also.

It takes a rat 6 months to reach full size.. just to help you figure out how many rats you'll need to breed to feed the snake.

I know by then I plan to have alot of them breeding probabl aorund 8.2 or 10.2 but it will be a while before it is even on rats that big. Also I will probably end up buying them for a while. April what city are you located in if you dont mind me asking?

Yeah maybe sometime. I usually work on weekends.

My dumerils is 7' 4" 21lbs, my hogg island is 5.5' and oh.. maybe 10lbs.

The dum might have babies sometime soon. Perhaps you would like a dumerils boa?

I do like the dumerils also. what are their requierments that you keep them in and how much would you charge for one or maybe even a pair?( if you dont want to say out in here then you can pm me if you please)

Re: Thinking about getting a burm
Dums are very hardy critters. They like it a bit cooler than say.. a red tail. I still give mine a basking spot in the low 90s and cool side around 80.

    They like to burrow.

A baby.. I'd probably charge $125.. if you want a pair, then $225 seems fair. My female is very nice high pink light phase, so I expect her babies to be quality.

I really don't know. Dumeril gestation is six months, I don't know when she was bred, or even if she is pregnant for certain. I'd want to get about four meals into the babies before letting them go.

If she doesn't produce this year, I will breed her next season with my new male dum.
