    I need help
Hi,I’ve had this male for a few months now, when he was bought he had a some what chubby face but nothing the vet was concerned about when I first took him in to be looked over, a month later he had gotten a heck of a lot worse so I isolated him from everyone else and took him to the vet, they said it wasn’t ri or mouth rott they thought it was an abscess , so we got injections and sent home, few weeks later wasn’t any better so we made another trip into the vet, same thing just a diff medication, STILL NOTHING! No change , I’m at a loss and don’t know what else to do for him , he’s about 4 , weighs 1334 grams , in rack system , hot spot of 90, never misses a meal has perfect sheds, hasn’t lost weight, I’ll insert pictures. Please any suggestions would be great! Nothing rude I understand people will be but I’m just here for help.

If it's a deep abscess it may need surgery to correct and remove the pocket of infection.

I’m hopeful that people are nicer here, I’d tried to get help on a local reptile group, failed to do so

Oh wow, poor guy. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in soon, as all I can think of after seeing the photos is the likelihood that this is a surgical issue. Have they done any imaging? Is the vet you're taking him to an exotic vet with experience with snakes?

Oh that poor sweet baby. That looks like an abscess. I'm no vet but I would not take no for an answer. That's not normal. That looks like a huge infection to me. That makes me want to cry. That sweet baby needs a good vet.

I’m trying to find another vet but it’s about a 2 hr drive to the nearest one that will see reptiles where I’m located! I’m trying to figure something out to help him, I have sooo many snakes and have never seen anything like this! [emoji31][emoji2358]

I say get some gas and get ready to drive 2 hours.. you need a different vet.

My guess is that it probably is an abcess, and that it is gonna need to be surgically cleaned out.

See I thought so too, but this last week I took him back and he said “ I don’t thinks it’s an abscess that can be drained “ well what the heck is it then? I mean it has to be something!! He also thought it might be from rubbing on his tub.

That looks crazy! Its a good thing that he hasn't lost weight and is still eating but I would definitely try to get to another vet for a second opinion if nothing else. Just like everyone else here I'm no vet but it seems like your primary vet is missing something. I hope everything works out. Good luck.

Sadly many vet have limited hands on experience with dealing with snakes, mouth abscesses are often due to a broken tooth or in some cases a prey that bites the inside of the mouth or another type of injury and can develop months after an the original problem issue. Considering the extent surgery is most likely to be your next step to remove the caseous pus followed by anti-biotic treatment.

Here is how you can find a Herp vet in your area http://thereptilereport.com/category/vet-directory/ - https://arav.site-ym.com/search/custom.asp?id=3661

I second the motion on finding another vet one that specializes in Exotics.
Did you say he was eating with his face like that?

I am glad you came here for help and I'm sorry your vet has not been helpful at all. I hope you are able to get your snake to the vet that's 2 hours away. I'm sure if you texted or emailed those photos the vet would get you in right away!

I have used some of the vets listed by the AVMA that claims to know reptiles when they lack of knowledge or have miI suggest you call ahead and confirm the level of experience he or she has with snakes. The more specific the better.

I've been pretty busy last couple days, just caught up with this thread, but unfortunately you've already heard from others what I'm about to say...nothing new.

Antibiotic injections will not cure an abscess like that appears to be...it needs surgical intervention by experienced herp vet which I truly hope you find, and soon.
That a vet expected this to "drain" surprises me- snakes have pus that's pretty solid, so any substantial abscess like this can only be fixed with surgery- it won't drain.
Less likely but also possible is some kind of tumor, but I'd put money on "abscess".

It's amazing your snake still eats...that has to be painful and it pains me to see & think about. There really isn't much we can do by forum other than reassure you
of what you're seeing & point you in the right direction...it's not something you alone can cure. So sorry, poor snake.

What part of Indiana? I am in Northwest Indiana. You will have the most luck in Indianapolis or, if you're close enough to the border, heading into Chicago. There are also reptile vets in Lafayette, including Purdue, which is renowned for veterinary science. Depending on where you are located I may be able to help if transport is an issue.

Transport isn’t an issue , having someone know what there doing is , I shouldn’t have been to so many vet visits with nothing new. I’m trying my best .

I was not trying to be offensive, and I apologize if I was. I also did not say that you aren't trying your best. Without knowing which vets you have already tried and where you are located, I'd suggest reaching out to this exotic animal hospital in Indianapolis. Indy is nice because it's pretty centrally located in the state.
