    Were you ever scared?
Were you once scared of snakes before you got one/them?

Yep, a bit afraid, particularly of venomous snakes, but not terrified. My mom is still terrified of all snakes. The most likely snakes I would come across in my area are rattlesnakes and copperheads, so some fear is not entirely without good reason.

I had a teacher who had a class pet ball python in elementary school, so I knew a little about them, but not much. Knowing the facts really helps eliminate a lot of fear.

When I was young my mother went through a period of time where she caught wild Northern water snakes and kept them as pets (catch and release). Not the best pets....years later when I held my first corn snake I couldn't keep my hands steady...

Edit: My mother is deathly afraid of my ball pythons...The irony...

I was definitely wary of them, if I came across a snake while hiking I would give it a wide berth. I also once almost stepped on a snake sunning itself on a rock while camping and that did scare me a bit because I thought if I had stepped on it I would have been bitten.

Now that I know more about snakes and can recognize different species, I can confirm that I have never seen a venomous snake in person. The ones I've seen before were most likely garter snakes. I probably wouldn't be nearly as concerned now if I saw a snake in the bush in my area, but I would still keep my distance, more for its comfort than mine though.

I think the moment when I first held my friend's corn snake was when I really began to think they were pretty cute and cool. I didn't discover ball pythons until I read a story with a cute constrictor snake in it (it was a BP!) and looked up species of snakes to try and figure out what kind it was. Then I found RoyalConstrictorDesigns on YouTube, saw a pied ball python, and immediately fell in love :D

I definitely used to think they were icky!! We recently got an adult BP for our daughter who just turned 11. She first started asking for a snake when she was 4 and saw a pink snake (baby albino corn snake) at the pet store. But, now the whole family is in love with "Salazar", and everyone wants their own BP! He definitely prefers my daughter though - if someone else is holding him and she is close, he will go back to her!

Aww that is so cute! Sounds like he's very familiar with her and trusts her :)

Not scared or nervous around snakes. Spiders, on the other hand, are a completely different story. I cannot do spiders and other creepy crawlies.

Not scared, but equal parts of curious & cautious. The first snake I was given was a small (28") desert native, & while I had no concerns when I was awake, for
roughly the first 2 weeks that I had him, at night I had weird dreams about the snake...a wrinkle in my blanket was [in my dream-mind] the snake that had gotten
loose & was coming after me. After that, I had no more negative dreams about snakes. I firmly believe that was all the subconscious baloney from "society"-
from stuff my grandmother said (she hated snakes), from scary movies watched as a kid & from silly things others had said about snakes. If any snakes come into
my dreams now, it's either positive or about those who abuse them. I'm sure glad to be rid of the nonsense...now to end the abuses.

BTW, I was an adult when I got into snakes: as a kid, I played in the woods a lot, catching frogs & toads (then releasing them) but snakes were far & few, & way
too fast...not an option. Always fascinated by all kinds of animals, but couldn't have many pets as a kid...made up for it later though! ;)

I’ve been catching frogs, lizards, salamanders, newts, and snakes for as long as I can remember. My Dad taught me which snakes were safe to handle, and I was all in from that point on.

Spiders and bugs however give me the willies...and I truly freak out over spiders. 🕷

I was scared/extra cautious of them for as long as can remember it’s only in the past few years I’ve gotten more of an understanding of them.

The first time I held a snake was when I was a kid, I was in a store ‘Pets at Home’ it was a baby milk or corn snake and the employee there kept on giving me ‘hints’ on handling them I was too focused on what was being said an dropped it. It was ok.
What I learned is that they weren’t slimy which was unexpected for me as people always say that they are on tv plus every time I’d see them on tv it wouldn’t be anything positive about them just horror stuff.

I watched a ton of videos about them & read a fair amount about them. An decided to get a BP for my 20th birthday (last year). I’m glad I got one & would happily have another, but I’m gonna wait a few years first.
He’s not my first reptile I’ve got a beardie who’s 8 years old nearly 9. And did have a Pygmy chameleon which passed away.

I see most every you are in the US. We don’t really come across snakes when we’re out an about. I go fishing every now and then an once I found a little blue tub which had a load of baby frogs in it. They weren’t able jump out of it as there was a lid on it. I didn’t think it’d be fair to just leave them there so I set them free. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...456e3f6d33.jpg

I’ve said this before but for the sake of who ever wants to hear it again.

my entire life I’ve been terrified of snakes!! Like really terrified of them. I then had a little daughter and it was then I realized that fear is taught to us, and with that so is compassion and understanding.

I’m really into animals and when taking my daughter to different stores and expos I realized she started wanting to hold some snakes. So I told myself, what can a baby snake really do to hurt you? And what will I do by showing my kid that snakes are bad. So I manned up and acted like it didn’t bother me. After she held her first snake she fell in love and so did I.

I have gotten over a lot of things that have been bothering me since that day about 6 years ago. I just remember how terrified I was about snakes and how happy I am because I tried it. I’ve always been adventurous and like to sky dive and rock climb mountains and repealed off 2-400’ cliffs, white water kayak, etc. but this really changed my life.

This is a really cool story, good for you for getting over your fear of snakes to make your daughter happy! :) It's a great point about how fear is learned and how a little knowledge and experience can go a long way in remedying that.

It's awesome that you sky dive, rock climb real cliffs, and whitewater kayak by the way :o I'm way too terrified to try any of those things!

I was very fortunate to have the parents that made good money and could afford to let me join a high adventure crew in the Boy Scouts. This was a invite only group as it was only for the 1% of people that could afford the trips and gear, plus we trained a lot. I also have my name engraved on the granite wall in Houston for being an Eagle Scout.

i had parents that didn’t let their fears hold me back and I wanted to grant that to my daughter as well. Just didn’t know it would teach me as much as her! I thank god for all that has happened to me! The good and the bad, for that’s how u learn.

I used to catch garters (and release after a minute or two) ever since I was in middle school so I've been fascinated by snakes for a while but never imagined I would have one as a pet. The first few times that I handled my ball python I was afraid that she would bite me. Over time I got more comfortable and the fear quickly went away. Now it's been over two years and she has never bitten anyone.

I'm more afraid of my dwarf hamster than I am of most snakes!

    Re: Were you ever scared?
I have never held fear in my heart for any reptile on their turf. I am a blessed man in my parents supported my budding passion for snakes and lizards by taking me to every possible DNR program on the native reptiles to my home area. My mom always tells this story:

When I was 7 years old or so, my Grandmother (who is deathly afraid of ANY snake) opted to move into a newly build housing division in the town we lived in. This division was created by removing a large wooded space on the SE corner of town (inside the city limits). My mom took the kids over to help unpack and since I was more than useless for the task at hand, I was sent outside to play in the back yard (fenced in). While out there, I found a new friend. I have very little recollection of the exact events due to age, but I do remember that this was the largest most beautiful specimen that I had ever encounted of the "Black Rat Snake" and wanted to share. I walked in the kitchen with a full grown snake (Probably female based on the size my mother describes) and say: "Look Gamee at what I found!!".

My mother tells me that my Grandmother could have beaten out any Basketball professions for a straight vertical jump. She went from the kitchen floor to ontop of the kitchen counters in one jump, haha. The next thing I remember the Snake was done being "friendly" and proceeded to inform me he'd like loose, by turning around and chomping onto my hand. Mom freaked, I was in awe of this snake "trying to eat me" and Gamee was about to faint, haha.

It was at that point that my parents doubled up my Education of Reptiles native to my area to keep me from picking up the wrong friend.

I have encounted Venomous in the wild. Both Copperhead and Water Moccasins. By respecting them and their space/territory, I've never had anyone with me, or my self, have a poor altercation with one of these creatures.

I am with Diane though; Spiders, Scorpions, and Centi/Millipedes set of my "NOPE THE NOPE NOPE" so hard. Probably why I am debating one as a desk pet. lol

I think I was ‘apprehensive’ for sure .. I grew up in the 60’s and nobody had snakes as pets in my ‘circle’ .. I like/ liked to be different and back then I had a Tortoise , a few Piranhas and a pet Pike :)

The only snakes I was aware of were ‘killer’ snakes like Cobras and Rattlesnakes seen on the telly plus big brown Boas and Burms at the local zoos - they were massive and you’d see them asleep in the corner on a big concrete pit- heaven knows what the temps and humidity levels were :(

I was always intrigued and had a collection of rubber / plastic snakes :)

I’ve been scratched by cats , bitten by hamsters , dogs , rabbits , tiny Shetland ponies and a few others I’m sure .. so I’ve always had a heathy ‘respect’ for all critters :)

I was never "scared" of snakes. Always fascinated by them, and always had a very healthy respect for them (still do, and always will). Never thought I'd actually own one. This has been a very interesting experience - especially finding out how much fear and hate there is for snakes. I never realized, until I owned one, how much of that is out there. Especially coming from friends and family! My own daughter is terrified of snakes, and goes white if I mention bringing Alice out. Her kids love Alice. I don't understand where her fear comes from. It's kinda sad. My other daughter is fine with snakes - she's like me. Healthy respect, but admires Alice and will handle her.

Got bit for the first time when feeding him last week which was my fault. The rat wasn’t warm enough an he went right past the rat an got my hand. Was quite scared of getting bit by him but now I know what it feels like.

When I was a kid had about 7 dwarf hamster Roborovski’s. One lived way past the expected lifespan. 5 years, nearly 6.

I've loved snakes since i was a little kid. My dad has always been terrified of snakes, --hold on my gecko is gunna fall off the table-- but i never let his fear stop me from catching gardner snakes, frogs, and salamanders in Iowa in the summer. I got my first ball python (a normal from petsmart) after turning 18, her name was Spook. not long after adopting her she passed away at 2 or 3 months old due to being born with a hole in her digestive tract. i miss her every day <3. I adopted my second bp while i still had Spook, --"cASS NO"-- from someone on craigslist. he was 4 1/2 years old and 4 feet long, and after taking him to the vet, i discovered he had a horrible respiratory infection. now he still has some breathing problems, but he's gotten a lot better. he's my icky drooly boy but i love him.
just a few weeks ago i almost lost my thumb to a 12 foot Burmese python named Hannibal, but that was my fault. I volunteer at a reptile rescue and i mixed up him with the other fat python named Alice, theyre both huge albinos in the same room. Even after having an enormous python try to eat my hand, and almost throwing up because of the anxiety, i was more worried about him than myself. i felt bad because i knew i scared him, and thats why he struck at me. i still love snakes and that wont stop me from rescuing as many as i can.

Good reason to be more afraid of a hamster...their bites can be more significant than snake bites (except for hots or giants). I grew up with parakeets too...same thing.

:snake: Helps to remember that our snakes are thinking much the same thing..."is it gonna bite me?" ;)

I never got into snakes until well into adulthood...for one thing, I'd had pet rodents of all kinds, along with other animals. I just hadn't met any snakes*, & then I had to
make peace with their diet. I'm very glad I did. (*at least none besides those in a program given to my elementary school class, & about which I can only remember the
huge snake that was handled on stage; I suspect the program at least helped keep my mind open, against all the fiction about snakes.)

I am WAY more afraid of a bite from a full grown Momma rat that doesn't want me touching the food she made for me as opposed to a Snake too. Any snake other than a Hot. And I've been bitten by a large Retic before, haha.

Nope, I've never been afraid of snakes. Might have been different if there was venomous around here but since everything is harmless, I grew up handling them every chance I got. I played with all the orb weaver and jumping spiders too, now I own tarantulas.

I can't remember that I ever was. I was taught from a young age, growing up in the desert, to watch your step. I once came across a very fat healthy rattler on a hiking trail that was in the process of eating a small rabbit. Even then I was fascinated and observed it from a safe distance.

In junior high I volunteered to help my teacher care for his animal collection and that included two boas, a ball python, and a kingsnake.

I guess whatever instinct was supposed to be there wasn't there! LOL! But it's funny, I show photos of my pets to people at work and some start to shudder even at the mention of snake, and won't look.

Completely terrified. I almost stepped on a 3ft black rat snake when I was about 7, and from then on, I was worse than Indiana Jones. That's about 60% of why I got one though, face your fears and all that. Humorously, the first snake I ever actually handled was a ball python, less than a month ago, and instantly realized why they are so popular. It even clung to my wrist and tried to refuse going back into the enclosure at the pet store. I went back and bought that one, in spite of the pet shop horror stories, and it has done incredibly well.

Very strange. I was reading your post and had to look and see if I had typed that earlier. :O Did the exact same thing at 7 yrs. old and when I realized what it was I jumped so high I cleared my bicycle that was propped up on a kickstand. Was terrified ever since. Thankfully, I have that "face your fear" gene as well.

    - Terrified of snakes? Well, just buy one and stick it in your house where you sleep. Done!
    - Terrified of heights? Then just go skydiving. Done!
    - Terrified of the water? Just learn how to scuba dive. Done!

Not sure if we're strong-minded or just crazy. :rolleye2:

I wouldn't use scared, very cautious. I live in Florida and there are some nasty slithers around here. I never understood why someone would have one as a pet.
I think I was about 15 and my brother got a bearded dragon, which led to the family going to conventions to get big boxes of worms. Which is where I found my love for them. I can't remember the morph of that first ball python that stole my heart, but I still have its' picture. I held a few snakes at the conventions that followed and knew snakes were in my future.
Mom wouldn't let me have snakes.
So day 1 of moving out, I got me a Sand Boa. Kinda thinking it'd be a better start than a ball python. Now I also have my ball python.
Mom is not impressed, but I'm very happy that that one little snake started my interest. Still cautious of snakes outside.

I think you can be forgiven for worrying about "nasty slithers" in Florida...it's one thing when you live in the desert (where I lived when I first got into snakes) because
there is very little cover for snakes to hide & pop out of...but where you are, there's a lot more cover in most areas. :gj: Good job overcoming the fear!

:rolleye2:

Given that I also thought 12 years of active duty and 4 trips to the middle east were good ideas also, I'm leaning towards crazy, but maybe it's a mix of both.

Edit - On a side note, I have decided to name my BP Sushi, after another fear recently faced and turned into a passion.

Nope. From a pretty young age I was fascinated with the outdoors everything in it. Never really bought pets but caught snakes lizards frogs turtles. You name it I probably caught it at one time or another. At 15 got my first real job cleaning cages in a Pet Store which opened a whole new world.

I've never been scared of snakes, just always fascinated with them. I started catching venomous snakes when I was 12 or so.

However, being I deal with spitting cobras, more so my siamensis will randomly hiss when I'm working with him, and it usually catches me off guard. He's just very vocal, he's never actually spit, or struck at me.

LOL! This is a good thread... I have to admit I was indeed scared of snakes when I was a little girl. I thought all of them for the most part were slimey and out to eat you. Then I watched a documentary about snakes, which lead to holding one at a pet store in my early twenties. The rest is history!

I was the same way with tarantula's...maybe alittle more fearful than anything. But my Mexican Red Knee is so docile, definitely a pet rock! :spid0r:

Not real sure, I just had myself convinced somehow that I hated it. A few months back I decided to give it a shot, and it turns out that I love it. How I'm trying all different kinds. Don't think I'll be able to get away with doing that with snakes though, but man there are a few...

    I hear ya!

I bought AND handled my 1st snake all on the same day just under 4 months ago and have been hooked ever since. Going back to the expo. on April 8th to get my 2nd one.

Nope, I've always loved snakes. The first moment I remember thinking, "I want a pet snake" was when I was maybe 6-7 years old and I held what I remember as a 10' python. I could barely stand, and the snake trailed its head and tail on the ground, but I was in love.

I grew up absolutely fascinated with all kinds of animals, and would devour any information I could find on whatever animal. I'd pick up 5-6 books on various animals from the library every week, and scour the internet. That perhaps kept me from being scared, plus I didn't have anyone around me that was scared of them.

I did have a few friends and family members start out fearful of them, but everyone that was vocal about it has since turned around after I started spamming photos on FB. haha

lol Wish my SO would apply that logic, he refuses to try all kinds of food because he's sure he hates it despite never eating it. Then, if I do successfully convince him to try something, sometimes that stops once attention is brought to it. -.-

I have two now and that is my limit because that's all I can afford to keep up the way that I like to keep them. I like to buy them cool decorations for their enclosures and then you always have to be prepared if one needs to go to the vet

This is almost exactly what happened to me, I'm going to do a progression thread and tell the whole story one of these days, but I went to a big box pet store just to get a closer look at a snake and see how I felt handling it. Well, long story short, it clung to my wrist and refused to be put back, so I came back the next day and bought it. I had originally planned to buy from a breeder, not a pet store, I have heard the stories and seen the videos, but after that first handling, I wanted the one that was clearly cool with me handling it.

I have a care card that I have loved! Although I’ve never used it on my pets I like having it for my family. I put over a grand on it trying to save my sisters pug and then had it cremated for her when we had to put him down 3 days later. I’ve never seen a cremated pet but it was really special for my sister and I’m glad we did it!

Yeah they do that! I went to a expo to get a banana and came home with a purple passion! Idk why they are so rare, they are so beautiful to me. I’d never seen one before and almost broke my kneck looking as I almost walked by
