My New Baby Corn
So I finally got my new baby corn snake this last Thursday. She came all the way from New England ( Massachusetts area) to Texas so that was quite a trip via FedEx airplanes. Needless to say she's scared to death which is to be expected. I did offer her a Frozen thawed pinky this morning I knew it was too soon and as expected she didn't eat. Breeder said she was a 2018 but I'm guessing it was December of 2018 because she still small her weight looks good but she's small. I'm going to wait a few more days and then offer her food. She's always hiding so I think when I see her start to come out of hiding she might will be hungry enough to eat.
-
Looking forward to "meeting" her here...but don't scare her with a photo shoot just yet...that will "keep". What "kind" is she? Congratulations, corn snakes are
great (is this your first?) & I hope you have many happy years with her.

Re: My New Baby Corn
first I have to go back and try to figure out how to load pictures on this site again.
She is an Ultra/ hypo strawberry tessera.
The only picture I've ever seen of that type pulls HER picture up from the site that I bought her from which is Mount Pleasant herps. I think her picture may still be on there. But my gosh she is so small! She is only my second snake of course my first one is my ball python so she is my first corn
-
Yep I just typed in her kind on the internet and it pops up her photo from the Mount Pleasant herps site.
I feel so bad I wonder how long she's going to go with being so scared:(

Re: My New Baby Corn
Baby corns are absolutely tiny as hatchlings, so she may be a bit older than you think. They grow pretty slow at first since their meals are 1-2 grams and only a fraction of that stays as growth each meal.
Corns seem to be pretty scaredy and flighty when they're little, so just five it some time. They're especially nervous when they're in a whole new place.
Our corns were both about 1 month old when we got them at 6 grams and 5 grams respectively. For size reference, this is the 6 gram one after a few weeks (maybe 7 or 8g) in my small hands.

I 'second' the post above...when your first snake was a BP, yes, a corn snake will look TINY, but just be patient...let her hide & be a baby while she figures
out that she's safe. Don't handle until she's feeding (preferably a few times+)...she'll grow very slow for some time. Make SURE there's no tiny holes she can
get out of, as even though small, they can climb well. There's no rush to handle...these are usually docile snakes, & when you do, remember how much
warmer we are than they like to be (<about 75*), so keep it short- their tiny bodies can over-heat fast...if they don't want to sit still, they may have a very
good reason. ;)

I did snap a couple pics before I put her in her new home. Her eyes, looks like she's about to go into shedhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...48bf7fa98c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dee34b91ec.jpg

She definitely looks big enough to be a summer 2018 baby. My July 2017 corn was about 45 grams in March last year; picture of him on a cutting mat that has inch markings for scale.

Very pretty! I cannot tell from the photos about upcoming shed though...she might just have light color eyes? (use a tiny flashlight in dark room, across the
arc of her eyes...impending shed will show up easily that way as "milky").
-
Re: My New Baby Corn
Her eyes are kinda light now but breeder says they will darken to black with brownish rims. She is kinda long but a little less than the cutting board snake LOL!, which is gorgeous by the way.
I have a list of names I came up for her but can't decide which one to pick

Very pretty baby! I agree with the others that is probably a summer 18 baby.

Thank you. She seems so "fragile" compared to my BP, LoL!
I will just be relieved when she eats. I know I offered food too soon she's only been here a couple of days so I'm going to give her a few more days and offer it again

They are tiny compared to the bp hatchlings. I bred corns a few times years ago. The first clutch that hatched was just incredible. Cute, snappy, and pink (snow corns). I mostly had larger snakes at the time, predominantly boas. They looked like worms in comparison. lol
-
Re: My New Baby Corn
They really feel fragile when they're super tiny babies. I got my corn first, so my second snake, an adult male BP, felt HUGE by comparison. I imagine it is even weirder going in reverse. They're a lot more resilient than their size makes it seem as far as trying to jump off tables or out of the cage goes (not so much on squishing I'm sure). Mine made a kamikaze leap off my hands at 10g and dropped 4 feet or so to the carpet below and wasn't even phased (he just tried to slither off under some tables and boxes the little dork).
I know I made that same "mistake" of offering food sooner than I should, but mine proved to be a ravenous baby. He took a pinky from me off tongs the evening after I got him from the expo. (Pickup Saturday, ate Sunday evening) He is still a more ravenous eater at a year and a half old than either of my kingsnakes.
I'd wait 5 days from the offer to try again, though, in case she happens to be more shy or nervous than the average the extra time will help her settle. She's looks to be a good weight in the picture, so a it certainly won't hurt her. :)

It takes them time to build confidence.
Solana, my Scaleless Sunglow Motley Red-Factor Corn snake was 8G when I got her. Only 2 months old.
She would devour pinkies at that size, but only if I put in front of her hide and walked away.
Now, and soon after we got her - maybe 5 feedings in - she started grabbing the food off the tongs. She's about 90G now, almost 1 year old, and she begs for food, just like her brother (Hypo-Lavender Adult Male) corn snake.
Give her some time, but also, don't be afraid to leave a f/t food item in there for a bit and leave her alone to see if she eats.

Re: My New Baby Corn
Next time I offer food how long is it safe to leave? I was thinking in a few days to offer it in the evening and leave it overnight, is that okay? And I probably should leave it on the floor of the warm side???

Is that where she spends the most time, the warm side? If you leave it there, it spoils faster. Overnight is fine, but not warmed (at least not right over/under the heat).

I find that she alternates between both.

Re: My New Baby Corn
I can ALREADY tell that corn snakes move around a lot more than ball pythons!
She ( my corn ) has already moved around to different spots in her enclosure more than my ball python does in 2 weeks time, unless its close to feeding day. Lol. She does now, come above ground from the Aspen bedding more than she has the past couple of days.....I I'm so excited to have her I just want her to hurry up and grow grow grow

Patience, she'll get there. ;) I know that as hatchlings, corn & other rat snakes are skinny little tykes that are hard to hang onto, but their activity & ease of care makes
them worth the wait. They're cool to watch, even when too small to pick up much...and for anyone that is afraid of a snake bite, the teeth of a corn snake are too tiny to
feel like anything more than sandpaper...and by the time they grow a little bigger, they're tame & very unlikely to bite.

Re: My New Baby Corn
Just heard back from my corn snakes breeder and he said she hatched mid September 2018. That's funny because her in my ball python are the same age! Both are 6 mos old. Now that's pretty cool !

New baby corn ate!
IDK where my previous post is on my new corn so sorry to start another BUT she at tonight! Just got her on the 13th and tried offering food on 16th with no luck. She ate and swollowed in record time. Much faster than my BP but she did not waste time constricting.

:gj: Way to go! Congrats, just gets easier from here on...corn snakes aren't like BPs...they eat! ;)

Perfect! :gj: Gets easier from here on... Some snakes eat faster than others, don't be overly concerned; she'll feel a lot braver after she gets a few meals done.

She's not, actually. The shed skin stretches some when it peels off (remember that the skin actually goes around & under each scale) so it's about 20% longer
than the actual snake is. Not trying to steal her thunder though...;) Good snake! :gj:

Haha, no Thunder stolen but thanks as I did not remember that. In another day I'm going to check her and make sure the eye caps came off properly but being that she just ate yesterday I didn't want to upset her in any way..

Pro tip, you can check the shed for the eye caps instead of waiting to check her. If there is a clear scale in both spots where the eyes are in the shed, then they are not stuck on the snake.

What an adorable baby corn! Love the colours.
As a python owner I'm always so surprised at how thin colubrids are as babies! She looks no thicker than a pencil :o

She's probably the width of a pencil at the most My other snake is a ball python which I've had for 4 months now and I always thought he was small.... wanting him to hurry up and grow . BUT compared to this girl he's not so small. Lol
Funny thing is they're both the same age they are 6 months old so it will be very fun and interesting watching them grow

Many hatchling corn snakes aren't even as thick as a pencil. But they grow...
The skinniest snakes I've ever raised were some desert glossy snakes...at only 7" long, they made corn snakes look big! :D

Oh my, I will have to Google those skinny things !
Towards evening time I peek into her enclosure and it's like almost every time she's peeking out and when we meet eye-to-eye and she draws her head back in the hide and then she'll ease it out again as if to see if I'm still spying on her. She's definately feeling more comfortable.

You gave me a laugh, Jellybeans...I can picture you & your little corn snakes playing "peekaboo". I just love nosy snakes...
I used to have a pair of glossy snakes...sort of a creamy beige with black & brown freckles, they don't get very big (about 3') & they're docile f/t mouse-eaters.
Raising their "kids" was a real challenge though, they start off as lizard-eaters. That's why you don't see them captive-bred...like my TX longnose snake, they
take some time & expertise to "convert". Both glossy & longnose snakes have a fairly narrow face, so they don't eat bigger mice than hoppers. Nice pets as
adults though.
-
Congrats. I'm seriously considering getting a corn before long also.

Our younger corn is majorly nosy like that also.
When he feels my footsteps in the room, he will peek out and proceed to come all the way out of his hides and up to the sliding glass doors and watch me, particularly in the evening. I think he believes he is more likely to be fed by doing this. He'll just sit there and stare at me.
