    Mice to rats
My youngest BP is on adult mice and I'm driving about 40 mins to stock up on feeders, but I want to make the switch. What size rat should I be getting? I'm not sure if I can look at them and don't want to get anything to big or small.

    Thanks.

A large mouse in the UK is comparable to a small rat weener in size, but rats have higher fat content than mice

Different sellers sometimes label them differently (as to sizes), so it's best to weigh the prey you're feeding & ask for rats by weight. If you're talking about
frozen, most sellers list them that way. If not, ask for size comparable to adult mouse.

Yup. F/T. Hopefully I can look at them. I never weighed the mice. [emoji849]

Cool thanks. I was actually looking for this. And I didn't realize but I've been doing large rats for my big guy. Should I just do medium or small then? He's huge though lol.

Rats are very calorie rich so you have to be careful overwise gets obese

My male BPs (1400g + 1,000g) both get small rats (60-70g typically) every week or two weeks.

If he is huge are you sure he is a male? Some snakes have been mis-sexed before. But if you are sure it is a male indeed. I would recommend dropping to smalls. I myself believe in going by the girth idea. Thickest part of the snake equal to the feeder. Some say feeder 1and a half times larger but I like going with the same equal sizes I recommend going by what the chart suggests actually.

The large rats are actually smaller than the widest part of his body. Was told he was a male when I rescued him but it could be wrong.

Do you have any photos of his body, if is a male may be overfed and a chuncy monkey to speak

Do you know the weight of him and the large rats?

But yeah, a picture would help everyone here get a better idea also.

I went with medium for my oldest and didn't get any for my youngest because they didn't have the right size for her.

Do you think the medium are too big, to? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c36ab086ca.jpg

My young guy is the same size as yours (around 240g) and I just switched him over to rat pups. He was on adult mice before.

They only had live rat pups. So I didn't get any. I'm going to order some and have them delivered. Have to check out some places.

If you're going to order online, think ahead about 6 months. Get some pups and some weaners for your little guy, and some smalls for your big guy.

If it was eating adult mice, and you are starting the switch to rats, I find it to be easier to do so when given a smaller prey item. So I would try a large rat fuzzy and see how that goes. Once it starts eating consistently, then go for a small rat pup or slowly build up to a size appropriate for its weight. No need to rush things.

    Re: Mice to rats
If you have access to mouse bedding, try rolling the rat around in the stinky mouse mouse bedding right before feeding. Did that with mine, and it worked like a charm.

This is my guy he’s 660 grams and on weened rats, he was really underweight when I got him as pet shop had him on small mice which is one of reasons I got him I wanted a bp but the store wasn’t meeting his needs so I took him. He was 470 grams when I got him I switched him immediately to weened rats.
