ROLL CALL: Who's attending New England Reptile Expo, January 6?
So boys and girls, it's almost time for a new year to dawn. And with that comes a whole slew of shows to attend! So first up (for me) is the New England Reptile Expo in Manchester, NH on January 6. There are 2 categories to respond to;
1) Will you be attending?
2) If you are attending and are a vendor, what company are you and what will you be featuring?
My boys and I will also be taking a field trip later that day down the road to NERD (New England Reptile Distributors) for a looksie and tour. We'll be easy to spot. Just look for a father and two boys wide eyed with their jaws on the ground! Hope to see you there!
PS: Has anyone here been to NERD? Is it a worthwhile stop? Thanks
-
How I wish I could go !!!!
Even though I would have to leave my purse at home, empty out all my pockets and sew them shut, tie my hands behind my back.
And afterwards get out of my clothes right inside the front door, wash them on hot with bleach and take a one hour long shower. Just to make sure not a single mite or whatever hitches a ride home.
Yeah, I'm not a bit paranoid or anything
I really would like to go to a good show, though, but it would be hard not to buy anything. I don't need any supplies right now and I sure don't need more animals. Although I can almost hear Deborah whispering to get a Leachie or Chewie :D

I may go to the expo. I've been away for the holidays, so thanks for the reminder!
I used to go to NERD regularly 15+ years ago. One time, Kevin and I hauled a beautiful Retic out of its cage onto the floor. It must have been close to 20 feet long, but I don't believe he does that often, and I don't know if he has anything that big these days. I haven't been there recently.

Re: ROLL CALL: Who's attending New England Reptile Expo, January 6?
I wish, but like Zina I’d need to take nothing but my drivers license. I am a weak woman.
As it stands right now, I have definite plans to add one more bp once the weather clears for shipping....and I’m looking at a pastel mystic potion locally. I do not need another snake, I do not need another snake...but he’s sooooo pretty. :weirdface
-
I'll be there...
...and yeah, N.E.R.D. is a great facility. I've only been once though. My Borneo Short Tail boy, Juice, came from there.
-
NO, too afraid to bring back hitchhikers :rolleye2:

I'll be in @9:30AM (they let people in 30 minute early), and I will be out by 10AM. Not as many vendors show up in January. It will probably be relatively quiet.

I was there this morning.
Sydney the laughing Kookaburra was on a roll. Jeremy the Fly River turtle seems to have slightly damaged the top of his shell somehow.
I suppose the storefront Zoo Creatures (open to the public) is worth a look if you have not been there before. There is an assortment of snakes/monitors/lizards/bugs available for purchase and they have a fish area, rodent area, and bird area in addition to the two reptile based areas. I'm pretty desensitized to to the Zoo Creatures storefront and I primarily go there to look at the stuff upstairs. The downstairs has a small assortment of overpriced ball pythons with basic morphs (saw a sub-adult Spider female for $300, and a sub-adult Het Pied female for $150), a few blood pythons, a few retics, and today there was a lot of iguana morphs in the 'Monitor' room. Some people were taking pictures of the adult Rhino iguana, but, I've played with him previously upstairs: so seeing him didn't even phase me. Of interest there were two Scolopendra gigantiea centipedes for sale: Huge buggers ($500/each). The largest one was already marked 'sold'.
If you want to get upstairs to the 'NERD' area where they keep the 'good stuff' (alligators, big monitors, cobras, adders, fancy ball python collection etc) the general public has to sign up for a tour. I don't know the schedule. Fair warning: If you go upstairs the monitors can smell pretty brutal since they like to 'ripen' their meat. Don't bring someone with a delicate stomach---and dress light: it is hot up there.

This will be an official warning for all involved, we do not allow sales talk on the main forum, and therefore if you answer the part in bold, it will be considered a violations of our TOS subject to a 5 points infraction.

I think it's smart to take steps to keep mites out of your collection, Zina, and that's not paranoid at all.
Years ago, a bunch of snakes in a collection I'm aware of were killed by a mite-transmitted disease that a friend brought into the collection after spending a day at this very reptile expo (which could happen at any show, I'm sure). You really can't take it for granted, and it's best to be careful.

Y’all will have a ball. Feel free to take pictures and share with the rest of us. :P
Shows are a lot of fun. I’ll be interested in hearing about your impressions of the selection and the show overall. While I do practice caution (if not self control) at the shows, each one is just as exciting as my first. I love seeing all the different species and morphs. It’s a great way to see animals in person and often they are much prettier in person than in photos online.

Looking forward to it. And we have a tour at NERD lined up for later in the day!

Hey, I am “MR Snake’s” son. Is there anything I should be looking for in this reptile show? Since this will be my first snake, I would like to start learning what I can during this show.

I’d say for your first show and with the plan y’all have in place, take your time and look at all the displays you can. Make notes about what specific animals interest you, what species, and the price, then compare with other sellers at the show. For example you might like the look of a specific color or pattern morph that might not be the normal wild type look for the species. Most breeders will let you take photos, so you could take a picture of the animals that interest you and get business cards for those breeders. As a suggestion, take a pen along so you can write on the business card what animal they had that you liked. This also gives you the chance to talk one on one with the sellers, as well as do some research on them later to see what kind of reputation they have.
I’m a huge fan of ball pythons, which is why I have 10 of them, no two of the same morph. However I also have a redtail boa, corn snake, Solomon Island ground boa, and Colombian rainbow boa. In years past, I’ve also kept Cuban boas and a few different carpet pythons. Each species has different traits, and each animal has their own personality. I believe MR Snakes has mentioned ball pythons, but the larger shows will have good selections of many types of animals. You also need to think about what you want from your pet...do you want to handle it or are you happy with a display only animal, do you mind if it hides all the time or do you want a more active species.

Re: ROLL CALL: Who's attending New England Reptile Expo, January 6?
50/50 I'll be going.
I'll advise shortly more definitively, what I'll be wearing, and where we can meet, etc. if I do go.
If I am able to make it, looking forward to seeing you Craig, and meeting you and the family, Mr. Snakes.

I'm up for any suggestions for meeting up. The where and when? I only know we have to be at NERD at 3 ish for a 4:00 tour. I'll have to look it up but it looks to be no further than 30 minutes away. Ideas?

Ha-ha! Meeting you guys would be cool.
I'm hoping to also bring a friend who made the smartphone apps for my Advanced Genetics Wizard. He's more of a computer guy than a reptile guy, though.

My son is interested in making apps so will get a kick out of talking with your friend.

I will NOT be coming home with a snake, I will NOT be coming home with a snake, I will NOT be coming home with a snake....
Ugggh, gonna be tough...especially unsupervised by my girlfriend....
I'll be heading up with a buddy and meeting my brother and 4 year old niece there. While my brother and niece are there I'll be showing them around since it's their first show. But I'm happy to say hi and meet up for a bit.
I'll post the day of with more details.

A friend of mine sent this to me via the show's FB page.
Just a reminder that the big New England Reptile Expo will be coming up this Sunday, January 6 at the usual location at the Doubletree Hotel Expo Center (formerly Radisson), 700 Elm St. in Manchester, NH.
We are please to announce that at 11am and 1pm the New England Herpetological Society will have their long-time Board Member Kurt Shatzl doing presentations on the Snakes of NH. These will take place in the meeting room right across the hallway from the admission tables, and are free to attend!
Official hours of the expo are 10am to 4pm. However, provided the vendors are loaded in and ready, we do try to open the doors closer to 9:30am. We are expecting a big turnout- get there early for best selection and least crowding!
Finally, if you park in the attached parking garage, be sure to remember to bring your parking ticket in to the expo with you and validate it in the machine by the expo entrance. This will get you the discounted $6 parking rate when you leave the garage. There is a hockey game going on the arena across the street at 3pm on Sunday, and thus a much higher parking rate will be posted- be sure to validate to get the discount. Also, parking will start to get tight in the hour or so leading up to game time, so plan accordingly and try to get there early if possible.
We hope to see lots of our fans at the expo!

It's really easy. Just have no cage, no supplies and no food = no problem!

The problem is, it’s so easy to buy a tub from Target/Wal-Mart, pick up a heat mat from the pet store, get a thermostat and Acurite next day from Amazon, and order rats for the following week. Of course, once you’re part of the obsession, I mean hobby, you usually have some spare parts lying around. :D

Ditto. While not ideal, I've definitely set up a few enclosures on the fly, like the time I went to Tinley and brought home 3 snakes instead of 2. You get pretty good at it eventually. :)

Won't be easy...

I'll hopefully see craigafrechette, MR Snakes, DaddyBennet, daksk, and anyone else from here at the reptile expo tomorrow.
As a way to find each other, I'll say that I'm ~6', slim with short hair, and I'll be wearing jeans, a black/brown plaid shirt, and I'll have a brown leather jacket with me. Please say "hi" if you see me. Do we need a secret handshake? ;-)
I'll try to get there near opening time, as I know some people are leaving before the end of the show to go to NERD.
-
I'll post pics at the show. I'll be wearing a Sherwin Williams full white paint suit so that it'll be easy to spot the mites!
-
I'll have jeans, blue boots, blue/black flannel with a Cool as a Moose hat......and a 16 and 9 year old boys in tow. Planning on the 11:00 class/seminar.
-
I, unfortunately will not be making it today. I've been sick all week and finally felt a bit better yesterday. But I'm not feeling up for dealing with crowds today. So I'll be skipping this one and most likely heading to the spring show.
To all attending: Have a great time!!

Re: ROLL CALL: Who's attending New England Reptile Expo, January 6?
I too came down with something last night and will not make the 2+ hour drive and be around 1,000's of potential germ carrying people.
My apologies.
I will try for next time, or, Mr. Snakes, please advise if going to White Plains show. That is about the same distance (time wise), if not a little less, for me, and maybe we can meet up there?
Enjoy the show and try to learn as much as you can see what tickles your fancy. Talk to breeders and take their business cards/websites, etc.

Thank you both for not showing up and infecting everyone. Crowds were worse than I've ever seen on opening (even worse than one time when two buses full of rabid reptile fanatics showed up 2 hours early).
First photo is the line @9AM (not bad), and the second photo is the line @9:25AM (taken in the corner offset to the main entrance): the line was at least 300 deep snaking around (pun intended) to the side of the hall and all the way back to front again awaiting entry.
Note: Photo of a TSK Axanthic Firefly in normal light attached (for your reference).

Sorry, I'm not really a people person. I'm back home in my gym a hundred miles away at the moment--working out.
I also have to keep my anonymity due to the size and value of my collection ;)

Re: ROLL CALL: Who's attending New England Reptile Expo, January 6?
I hope everyone who went had a great time!
My fever is up to 101F now. If it doesn't improve, and fast, I have to go to the Hospital. Fevers of 101F and kidney transplants don't mix! I just took a bunch of tylenol, so we will see. It just spiked, it had been better all day.
Either way, good thing I didn't go!
Again, hope everyone had a great time!
Off to feed snakes and get some rest.
