When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
Well Caesar was out and found cardboard used to feed Rosey. He went crazy and when I reached over to get him off the cage top he thought my arm was a rat until he bit into. Once he tasted me, he let go but before leaving a nice wound. It bled all over and bruised up nicely.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8ed87f8bb3.jpg

So now i have been bit by all the big ones...Rosey, Vicky and now Caesar lol. All due to stupid things on my part haha. Luckily, they all released quickly when i didnt taste like dinner
-
I'm glad you "got away" lol... poor snake, teasing him with your arm like that. ;)

The worst part was after 'sampling' my arm and finding it wasnt dinner, he went on the hunt for where this rat went. He went down to the freezer and then to the floor. I had to grab my hook while trying not to leave a blood river where ever i went and guide Caesar back into his cage. His fat behind bent the snake hook too when i tried to help lift him into his cage haha. This morning, he was all fine and greeted me at the front of the cage for petting and sat on my other arm like nothing happened.....proof that no matter how 'friendly' your snake is, when they smell food, their brain turns off lol. Kind of like me with bacon :D
-
 Sounds like it got a little messy & wow, even bent the hook!?
It's also a bit like my dog, who resembles the dog in the kid's movie, "Up"- "SQUIRREL!!!!!!!" It's not just snakes...

Trying to figure out the angle... but cant. Looks like the bruise is from one side of his mouth as the teeth/mouth pattern is much wider. Glad it was quick and not a fiasco Bro!!!!

Yikes dude! Glad it only looks as bad as it does. Good thing it was a feed response and not a breeding “imma make you die!” bite! [emoji1787]

Glad u didn’t taste like rat lol

Re: When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
Bites from the bigger guys suck. Glad it wasn’t too bad all things considered.
Edited to add: I also bleed quite well when bitten. It always looked much worse until I got everything cleaned up. Lessons learned.

Lol yeah, i was looking at it and trying to figure out how he got me too but i cant. All i saw was him spin around and then it was 'OMG, I'm going to be in the newspaper as one of those statistics". Then it was over and he was off back to the cardboard and heading down the side of the cage stack towards the freezer.

Haha, so true. One of my friendliest snakes ever, one that can chill in my little kids laps, once bit my hand because I reached into the enclosure a bit too far with a heated thawed rat on the tongs! Apparently my thumb was a more attractive heat signature than the thawed rat, as she grabbed my thumb for a split second and instantly realized it was me and let go. She quickly recovered and grabbed the rat, but it made me realize that although she loves me, when there is rodents odor in the air, All bets are off!

Re: When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
Nice bruise! I have yet to be bitten by any of my snakes...do i even count as a real snake keeper?
Sonny did scare me pretty bad once though, was feeding him in the boaphile (fairly recently) and he got a bit over-zealous about ambushing the rat and came shooting out before i could really react. He didnt get me but it definitely caught me off guard.

Dang Sauzo. Glad to see it wasn't more serious. With the exception of colubrids, all the bites I've ever had have been food related. It sucks when it's a boa. I can't imagine getting tagged by a retic. lol
-
I'm glad it wasn't much worse. It's amazing how quick they are to realize that you aren't their normal prey.

They do love food. Happy you both are ok. I am always careful with Rainbow. She is no joke when it comes to food. At 12 feet now I think she would do some serous damage if she got me like this. She attacked a part of her new cage once because it smelled like quail still. She thrashed around trying to break it free or a few seconds before she realized it was not food. Happy it held fast or would have been a fight to free it from her. Very determined!
Happy you both are ok and again, pick up after yourself silly.

I've had food bites from boas and colubrids and it's a good thing they're small because it takes them a while to figure out that you are not food. I've had them let go and hit me again immediately. Retics at least figure out pretty quickly that you're not food.
-
Whoa,,,,
I'm surprised to see this, I'm glad it was a bite and release. Of our 4 snakes here the only one that hasn't bitten me is the royal.
These retics get pretty wound up for food. Typically Wallace is still "iffy" for touching a day, sometimes 2 after he eats.
I've not encountered any male, breeding behavior displayed by him which is nice.
Glad you came out of that OK!
-
Dang !!! That left a mark, huh ;)
Snake bites do bleed pretty good. I got nailed by a Redtail Boa once. Her upper jaw covered the top of my hand and her lower jaw got my palm.
Some teeth bit through those big veins on top of my hand.
For some reason most of the blood pooled inside of my hand. Almost immediately I had a golf balled sized swelling on top of my hand (trapped blood under the skin), it was pretty gross !! That hand turned all kinds of pretty colors over the next week or two. And I picked out some teeth a few days after !!
I can't imagine being bit by a giant. Especially if they mean it and don't let go. Ouch !!

Re: When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
Got tagged by my BP yesterday. Guess I got a little too close to her face while picking her up.

Purple is my favorite color, but I think I’ll pass on trying this method. :D
Glad you are okay and he quickly realized you weren’t the rat.

Yikes! This is why I think I will stick with BP's!

All things considered, this is a very minor bite, cosidering it was delivered by a Retic. Even for that size Retic.
I've seen some really gory pictures and read about what happened. Not sure why, but it seems that Retic bites can end up quite serious. They seem to "slice" like razors if they choose to do so. Deep wounds, sliced through tendons and arteries even. One story showed the aftermath of a bite and it looked like a murder scene. Artery was cut by a 14 foot Retic that had never, ever shown any aggression previously. It was a quick bite and release, too. Only, the Retic twisted his head before he let go, so sliced deeply. Owner was trying to move the snake for cleaning, no food response. I have also seem some gory bites (again, they sliced) delivered by relatively small Retics, around 10 foot or so?
They are gorgeous and majestic snakes. Very intelligent and aware. Lots of fun. But between the pushing issues and the potential for some serious damage should a bite occur, I will admire them from afar ;)
ok, I'm going to post one link, but be aware, pretty graphic.

So, its a good thing Ceasar didn't twist his head around before releasing..
-
Wow, that's some bite in that link! :O

....well here's a Retic skull so I would certainly say that's capable of hitting an artery in the right bite location. Any giant is not to be messed with....but I would also point out that even some small snakes like GTP's have some NASTY teeth as well....like a mouth full of hypodermic needles

Same here. And way too much snake for most people, I'd guess.

Too large, yet perplexing enough to draw both of you to the giant python forum rather frequently...;)

Re: When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
I look through all the forums periodically but don't be perplexed it's still too large of a snake for me. To each their own

Well in Caesars defense, it was pretty much my fault. I should have known not to let him get up top with those cardboards especially after feeding Rosey that day. And i should have seen the sign when he had his face buried in the cardboard flicking his tongue like crazy at it lol.
I've had Caesar almost 3 years since he was a 5 month old baby and this is the first time he has bitten me. When he doesnt smell food, he is a giant lush who loves attention.
And yeah, i am lucky he just bit and let go. And like i said, the next day he was out front greeting me and wanting his petting lol. He held a grudge at me for 3 days after i had to wrestle with him to unhook his upper lip from a tooth. He shoved my hand away and would crawl away from me lol. But when HE does something, its ok and he expects me to pet him the next day haha.
And sure, retics can inflict damage and like any large constrictor, need respect but out off all my snakes, him and the GTPs have the most personality.
In the end, stuff happens and like i said, Caesar is a giant lush who loves attention. Mistakes happen :)
-
But of course he expects you to forgive immediately.
And of course he takes as long as he pleases to hold a grudge.
LOL. He is amazing and he knows it. :)

Glad your ok, how big is he now?

Caesar is 9 feet or so. I've been bitten by my 6 foot boa and my 7 foot boa and while it didnt leave as bad of a bruise, they both still bruised up nicely. But again, none of my snakes have bit me and then held on. They 'sampled' me after me doing something stupid and then let go instantly. Like i said before, the tamest most laid back snake WILL become a monster when it smells food lol.

When your retic finds rat scented cardboard..
That is not somthing anyone looks forward to idc how many plates they have in their head lol. It seems to me ive seen more nasty Retic bites than Burm bites. I dont know for a fact but i think a adult retc has longer/larger teeth. The difference is Burms have 4 rows on top.. kinda like razor wire.. you cant tell without a proper scale size comparison but here is the Burm skull as Kev posted the Retic. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...30177695fe.jpg

Burm= t-rex
Retic= raptor.... Lol
A bite by either wouldn't be nice.
Luckily I've only been bitten but baby balls and a 3ft boa...
3ft white throat monitor was fun, took 5-10min to get him off my finger with 29claws in me too!!!

I am glad you are okay, Sauzo.
I love the skull pictures. This thread led me down a rabit hole yesterday of the Reptile Magazine archive of all the skull mysteries they used to post. Some crazy cool stuff!
