Firefighters Save 100 Snakes & Lizards from Christmas Tree Fire

Officials are investigating what may have sparked a house fire that jeopardized the lives of approximately 100 snakes and killed at least a couple of lizards in a reptile-filled Conroe home.
Caney Creek firefighters responded Saturday morning to reports of a large blaze coming from a house in Conroe's River Plantation subdivision, located just off Interstate 45 between downtown Conroe and The Woodlands.
After putting out the fire — with an assist from the Needham and Conroe fire departments — responders searched the house and discovered a second-floor bedroom full of snakes and lizards.
"That was quite the surprise to us, as well as the snakes," said Raymond Flannelly, fire chief of Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 9.
Firefighters moved the reptiles to the garage, which escaped the worst of the fire. Though "a couple" lizards died, Flannelly reported no snake fatalities.
Inside the house, officials discovered a burned-up Christmas tree that perhaps started the fire, though investigators had not yet confirmed the cause. Both floors sustained heavy damage.

Great job first responders!

Good job fire fighters, nice to hear some good news for the reptiles, normally most people don't care about them
I know someone lost part of the house but at least they didn't loose there collection too
Firefighters and all the emergency services really deserve every penny they get

Yeah I I’m looking for info to see if I can help the home owner out. Even if I just have a safe place while they go though such a terrible time

I would too, if something awful like that happened near me to a fellow herp-keeper. We never know when it might have been us instead of them...
And it might also be fun to send some holiday cookies to that fire department, to thank them for rescuing so many snakes & lizards.

really use some spare reptile cages & fast!

If you look at the pictures at the bottom of that article, the snakes are in clear plastic totes while being loaded into vehicles.
I suspect that the owner ran to Home Depot or Lowes, threw down a credit card, and picked up enough tubs and plastic shelving to throw together some temporary racks.

Pretty cool I'd say. The owner should definitely get some holiday goodies over to those fire fighters!
