Ovulating females.. do they look flat?
I am just wondering; my 990 gram girl, has this massively fat, almost flat look to her. Could she be ovulating? I guess that would be normal, but I think it'd be col because I raised her from a little thing :)
Don;'t worry; I am not breeding her this year, regardless.

I was under the impression that the snake ovulates during breeding season whether it has been bred or not.. in fact ovulation is a good indication that you should get a male in there fast! (if you want to breed that is)

I could easily be wrong.. but I think ovulation is the formation of the egg folicles.. which are later fertilized?

Usually the snake looks like it swallowed a football though.. quite obvious.

Your wrong, Ovulation is a good indication that you shouldnt put the male back in.. Your female is already gravid at this point..

    Not yours, Ginevive

To add to this, when a female ovulates, that's it. Whatever is in there is coming out, whether it's good eggs, bad eggs or slugs. If there is viable sperm present when follicles are released from the ovaries, and those follicles have become mature ova, then theoretically you should get good eggs. If there is no viable sperm present to fertilize the ova, then you'll likely get eggs that look good, but have no veining & eventually go bad - i.e. duds. If the ova are immature & can't be fertilized, you'll get small, yellow egg-shaped slugs that have a greasy or waxy appearance, or even small, shelled "eggs" that are discolored & misshapen.

A female snake does not resorb once she has ovulated. And yes, the term is resorb...not reabsorb. (just one of my pet peeves...I know it didn't even come up here, but I'm going on a tangent anyway!)

I learned several new things today.. like don't get a high strung snake too close to your face, or don't take your glove off when you're holding a feisty baby anaconda.. etc etc.

I'm not so sure I like learning things.

Yeah it's loads of fun. Especially when they get stuck with their tooth lost somewhere in your hand.

Sorry about thread hijacking.. I've been really bad lately.

LOL, Kara if you're going to note every spelling error when quoting Jas, you are going to wear out your "s" "i" and "c" keys. :)
