Building a website
Hey guys,
I'm kinda thinking further into the future, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience in website building, and if you used any particular software to do so? I was looking into Dreamweaver and Frontpage, but I'm not really sure. Also, how do you purchase a domain name?
I'm incredibly new at this stuff http://redtailboas.com/forum/images/.../banghead1.gif Like I said, this is for future endeavors (I'm hoping to breed Crested Geckos, someday) but it's never too early to start playing around.
Let me know what you guys think. Any and all input appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Building a website
For domain names go to godaddy.com - they are fairly inexpensive.
Not sure how long it will last but Yahoo has domains for about $3 - though I have never used them. http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domai...25267-10368211
Dreamweaver is a bit better than Front Page (IMO) but there are plenty of free WYSIWYG HTML editors out there as well. I will try to dig up some links for you. Best thing to do though is just snag an HTML book (or online guide) and build in Notepad - you will learn infinitely more that way though tables will seem initially very confusado.
Back in a jiff with some of that.

Re: Building a website
I know a fair amount about web design.. if you have any HTML questions, just ask. There are a lot of html tutorials online that are great.

Re: Building a website
i got my domain from www.godaddy.com . i think it was like 11.00 for 2 years, then I went ahead and got a cheap hosting plan from them as well....so I paid about $80 total for the domain and hosting for 2 years. It did not sound like a bad deal so i figured why not.....
....but now I have to learn how to design a webpage...I am using dreamweaver....everything I have done so far is kinda jumbled though...ha ha...and I can't even figure out how to link to other sites....bad huh?

Re: Building a website
Yeah, that is bad, Daniel. lol
I personally prefer hand coding the HTML.. maybe I'm just old fashioned, but the HTML editors seem to just hinder me.

Re: Building a website
I'm a web developer. I write html/xhtml, javascript, vbscript, asp, coldfusion, xml, and some java. I prefer to hand code. I use Homesite+ also by Macromedia. If you ever need any web help, just let me know.

Ha ha.....coding in HTML...i would not even know where to start :(
It should not be that hard to learn....after all, I can code a few different types of engineering software like GTSTRUDL.... programming is programing, right? ha ha...probably not ;)

Re: Building a website
HTML is super easy.. I learned it in 6th grade for heaven's sake! Just take a look at that tutorial.

HTML isn't actually programming at all. It is a mark up language. Just used to format an html document for display. Programming actually requires logic and problem solving. HTML requires none of that. Just practice and knowledge of the various tags, their attributes, and how they display an element.

Re: Building a website
I really hate coding by hand. I actually have been using Front Page for the last 6 months and I did my own site and also our password protected work site. I am pretty happy with it..

Re: Building a website
i use photoshop to design the overall look and graphics and dreamweaver to lay out the site in html and insert any code. i love both programs and wouldn't even consider using anything else at this point.

Re: Building a website
Hey guys,
Thanks for all the advice (would've said so sooner, but had to go to class, don't you know? :bored:) Anyway, I'm getting photoshop, mainly because I do some of my own artwork and wanted to mess around and see what I could come up with by digi-altering. Could you insert pictures done in photoshop using the html format?
Also, you dreamweaver users... you still have to sign up for a domain name and hosting, correct? I've done a little messing around with dreamweaver here in school... I took a class where we had to design our own website for the final project. But it didn't seem like we ever had to sign up for a domain or anything.
I know I'm stupid. :bonk: Have pity on me and my stupid questions!

Re: Building a website
No matter how you design the site, you always have to buy the domain and pay for hosting.
You upload your pics to the internet, so as long as the image is converted to either gif, or jpeg, you can use images created in photoshop.

Re: Building a website
Another dumb question: do you have to have a Microsoft Office Suite (Word, blah blah blah) to get FrontPage?
-
Re: Building a website
Not that I'm aware of.. it's a standalone application.

Re: Building a website
This is going to sound super lamo but for those of you who are just starting out and can stand starting simple. (I have to choke this out) You can create a MS Word document and "save as" a web page. That said there are MUCH better tools out there.
I used FrontPage for a while but have moved on to Dreamweaver, good piece of software. I did more free hand html back in the day but anymore its quite obsolete and ineficient manor to procede...it is a definate bonus however to have that basic understanding! My reptile site is nothing outstanding mostly due to the fact that when I actually TRY to have creative thought I come up blank :P
Admin/mod check (please remove if innapropriate):
*not to purposefully plug myself or the services I can offer, but I was telling Daniel yesterday after he mentioned his new site...but can offer hosting (for simple websites) and email services on my webserver (personally built machine, hosted and operated by me, co-located at a local ISP I previously worked for for easy access. -however...i cannot offer to create any websites for you.

Re: Building a website
I use photoshop and dreamweaver for my site. I love my dreamweaver so much. I don't know what I'd do without it. I also have two other sites that I do for others. Been doing it now about 6 years. I use Cheap-DomainRegistration.com for my domains and MySiteSpace.com for my hosting. I spend a total of $60 per year.
Here's some links to the above named places as well as to the sites I did.
Hosting
Domain Name
Coyote Pixels
Tucson Kart Club

Re: Building a website
I've been looking all over for Dreamweaver, but it's gawd-awful expensive! I was thinking about getting the 4.0 or MX version. Anyone use these?

You can download a free trial from macromedia.com. I think its like 30 or 60 days. You will have to register on their site to be able to download this.

I have MX. Once you get used to it, it's so simple.
