BP Cage Question

Hello!

Again with the little disclaimer. I don't have one at present but am researching them right now.

I'm going to be getting a female, so it will likely be larger.

So my question is which of these cages seems like tbe best for a female ball python?

4' 2' 1'

4' 2' 15"

Or

4' 2' 2'

Putting cost aside which would be most suitable with proper clutter for a ball python? I've heard they like to climb but how much should I be offering for that?

There terrestial snakes they barley climb spend most of there time in hides to be honest i catch mine at night on his log climbing but usually just because there is a basking spot and it likes to be weird sometimes but for the most part she/he spends 90% of its time in its hides so height is good to have but you dont need it i would prefer length in width over height but height os nice to have as well

Only reason mine has height is necause i got it a massive enclosure that had height to it 54" long 22" wide 25" high i was told it was a female so i wanted to give it something it would never need to upgrade but so far its been a pain to maintain but i love it so i deal with it heres a pic of mine. A female, and certainly a male, can live their whole lives in a 4x2’ of any height. They are ground dwellers and although they can climb, spend most their time hiding and feeling secure.

For the same reason I said 4x2’x15” for the MBK - easier to clean than a 4x2x1’, I would get that.

A 4x2x2’ for a ball is overkill. They will barely use the height and it will cost more to heat.

Out of curiosity why is it hard to maintain? Is it the heat due to the height? Or just general upkeep? What material is the enclosure? It's hard for me to see but I'm guessing glass?

Sounds perfect! (Thanks for the help on the previous thread as well)

From everyone's responses so far I think I'll be purchasing the 4' 2' 15". That way it's easier to clean and I can add a few branches should she want to climb.

I'm glad to hear that they don't need all that much height as it's nearly double for the 4' 2' 2' compared to the 4' 2' 15".

It was hard to heat the entire enclosure up i have 2 lights it is glass and cleaning is no fun either lol i love my enclosure but if i could do it over again i would have gotten something shorter the height is nice for an option but for the heat to penetrate to the buttom you need alot of wattage thats one of the down falls to height

I'm just looking at a life long cage not something that I'll just pop her in right away. I'm aware that BPs tend to be hard eaters when they aren't comfortable. So unless I have a very curious and happy BP tub or 10 gallon will be the starting size.

I'm ordering some AP cages for my frogs so I figured I might as well save a bit of shipping and order all the cages I'll need.
Then of course moving up to the big cage at an appropriate time.

I currently house my 2018 hatchlings in a 8’x30”x12” Monster cage that is split in 3 sections of 30”x32”x12”. They have plenty of hides and the black plastic enclosure makes it seem more secure. They’ve been thriving since I got them in July & August. I think you can work with the larger cage, just be sure to provide multiple hides and clutter for them to feel safe.

I'm doing a 4x2x18. Not because the BP needs the height, but just for the aesthetics of my set-up. It's going to be 3 pieces, all 4x2x18. The bottom piece will be a storage cabinet base, then on top of that, My Cal King, and on top of that, my BP. I got the extra height so that I had more storage space and because my cal king will climb and use every inch of her enclosure. I wanted all 3 pieces to be congruent so the BP gets the same size as the rest.

Unfortunately, I don't think you get a shipping discount from AP by ordering multiple cages at once. I was looking at 2 T-10's and when I went through the checkout, they charged full shipping for each one.

I have my young BP in an animal plastics t10. He weighs a bit over 300 grams and has had a perfect shed and about 4 consecutive meals. I have done a good job giving him cover and he seems to really enjoy his new home. He is still very young and small; as long as he feels secure there is no problem with a little bit larger enclosure. If you really want to deck out the cage I highly recommend a pro product RHP. They will ship directly to animals plastics and you will receive installed in the cage. I can't recommend either of those products enough.

That makes total sense. Between the glass and the height it does seem like it would be harder to heat.

That's awesome to hear! I'd love to just do the full enclosure right off the bat if the BP feels comfortable enough. I've heard many success stories with larger cages from the beginning and it would save cash should she reside in there from point A.

I love to clutter things up and I tend to make it so you can't hardly see my animals. Which they seem to love all the hiding places. It may be a bit harder with such a large area but I certainly would love to start in the cage size :)

Seems like there's 2 votes for cluttering up the larger cage! I may just go with that them. I love hearing that it's possible :)

I'm definitely looking into a pro products RHP! I'm getting a job over the summer (I make enough during the year to fully provide for my animals plus more) however I want to have more cash on hand for the expensive cages and supplies.

That sounds lovely! I would definitely want to do that if I was getting all the same size cages but unfortunately not.

I like the idea of the cabinet and will definitely be looking into that for sure!

Like the others have said, they may climb some, to reach the heat of the lamp. But they love to get into the hides. I would suggest one thing though. Use newspaper to line the terrarium then put shredded newspaper on top of that. Don't use regular paper or stuff from the mail. That paper is too stiff, I guess you would say. I used the coconut stuff, that wasn't good for my beaudreaux. Good Luck!

I agree...I was going to say that I've had a couple Pro-lines in the past that were only 12" high...very awkward to reach into for cleaning all the way in the back.
I would go with 4' x 2' x 15" hi too, for all the same reasons.
