Uth
So I have a temp probe under my substrate above uth. The digital temp reads 102. 6 but on top of substrate it's like 87.7 area. I'm confused. I have my CHE set to go off after it reaches 92. Should I raise that? And BPs don't burrow so should I not worry she can get burned? How do i get it hotter for belly heat?

I should add the probe is inside the tank on top of the glass covered by the substrate.

Is your UTH also connected to a thermostat? With the probe attached to the UTH outside of the enclosure?

They DO and CAN burrow. I'm not sure who told you otherwise. This is why it is recommended to measure your hot spot surface temps UNDER the substrate. Your hot spot is too hot!
If your UTH is regulated by a thermostat dial it back so the temp under the substrate does not exceed 92F. If you don't have a thermostat for your UTH get one ASAP. Remember ALL heat sources must be regulated by a thermostat.

I read in a few different articles that they don't. I had no idea. Good thing I checked. So the surface is hot enough then?

By that I mean the substrate above the uth.

And I am measuring under the substrate. The surface with my temp gun is reading 88.7

The temp of the substrate isn’t as important as the temp of the glass UNDER the substrate. NO surface should be over 90-92°.

: Ok. So I have my CHE hooked up to thermostat. Should I switch them out use it for the uth instead until I get another thermostat? Obviously, right?

Because the UTH doesn’t do anything for ambient, I would unplug that and plug the CHE into the thermostat until you get another thermostat. Or a dimmer switch for the CHE.

So you think she will be ok without the uth? Should I plug it in and unplug it if I'm around to monitor until I get it? I know belly heat is important.

Or do you think that's to much of a fluctuation?

She’ll be just fine. Many people don’t use UTH.

You may not even need the UTH at all. Access to the right temperatures is important, "belly heat" isn't. In the wild there are warm surfaces, but they are heated from above by the sun, not from underneath.
As far as whether or not they "burrow" versus using burrows made by other animals - that's beside the point here. The reason is that you presumably have an inch of substrate or less above the UTH if it does anything for the surface temperature at all, and that substrate is presumably fairly loose. A ball python will very easily shove the substrate around while moving around and getting comfortable, and may well end up lying right on the glass. That's not really "burrowing" behavior; there's nothing to burrow in anyway in 1" of substrate. But just the snake can still get burned if the surface of the glass is hot enough.

This is so confusing for me. Lol I was always told belly heat. But I switched the uth to my Stat and got a dimmer for my CHE. I'm monitoring closely to have the Temps perfect. I asked in another post about perfect Temps and humidity because what I resd in the sticky isn't what I'm told and read elsewhere. She's in her first shed with me and I'm a worried mom right now. I want it to be perfect.
