The New Crew
The 3 new additions are all doing well. I couldn't be happier with my choices even though the scrub is a bit fiesty at times.

He is strictly business when it comes to food.

Finally felt a little bit of that boa power at feeding time tonight. He hit his food harder than ever. It's only been 10 days.

I'm so excited to see this girl color up as she grows.

Re: The New Crew
El-Ziggy,
Everyone looks great!
How's the BO treating you these days?
The motley hit hard, huh? You don't say!
Behira, now over 1,100G and probably 4 1/2 feet, is actually starting to calm down a bit, I think. She hasn't hit the doors the last two feedings and seems gentler when hitting the rats then she used too. Maybe she knows they are F/T now and won't fight back? Maybe I am just used to it and it doesn't scare me as much?
She's on a 3 week feeding schedule now. Do not mistake quickness to strike with force of strike. She's on the rat pretty quick!
Really excited to watch them all grow with you! The Boas will take a lot of time to get to size, but that gives you a lot of bonding time until they are big.
On a side note, if you want to talk about a freak when eating, talk about Figment, my adult corn snake. He, ummm, unlike Behira, makes sure it's food first, but once he does, BAMMMMMM! He usually nails and wraps up in a 1/2 a second. He hits hard and does not mess around. His MO is usually to hit the mouse, wrap it, and then keep coiling and rolling all across his 3FT cage. He goes APE for food. Again, calm until he's 100% sure, but once he knows it's a mouse, forget about it!

They all look awesome, Ziggy!!! I never get tired of looking at your critters. It's legit impossible to pick a favorite.

Beautiful collection Ziggy! Always enjoy your pictures and updates.

Re: The New Crew
I realized the other day that as much as I love my scrub python I don't enjoy handling him as much as I do my other snakes. Taking him out is more of a challenge. Let's see if we can tame the savage beast today is usually my attitude :) . It's not a bad thing and even though I hope this changes it's no biggie if it doesn't. I love his ferocity. He's just always fired up and doesn't really allow me to relax. If anything he heightens my senses and keeps me in a more alert state. My other snakes, especially the slower moving boas have a more calming/soothing effect on me. The bulls, carpets, and olive are all fairly active but I'm not worried about any of them tagging or pooping on me.
I have to keep my guard up at all times with Mr. Klauss.

Your collection has filled out nicely Ziggy. I’m really looking forward to this new crew fill out into adults. In the meantime I’ll enjoy the transformation. :)

Beautiful snakes man. Show some of the carpets too! That scrub python is truly something else.
Has your BCO settled at all? My girl is still SO sassy.
-
Nice trio, the Scrub looks like a handful.

Re: The New Crew
Thanks y'all. I've got a pretty fun group. They're all special in different ways. :)
@ Piper- The BCO had her first shed yesterday and her 6th meal tonight. She's calmed all the way down. She very rarely hisses when I take her out now. She did accidentally tag me tonight but it was all my son's fault :). JK. He's 9 and I'm teaching him to feed the smaller snakes. He makes a rookie mistake and drops the mouse from the tongs too soon. Instead of leaving it and letting the critter eat it off the floor I decide to pick it up with the tongs and offer again. As fate would have it she got me pretty good. It's AMAZING how fast they are but I was really surprised that she packed so much punch.

Lovely photos, they all look great! Hopefully the scrub becomes a bit less feisty with age!

Never a dull moment with this one. Dude, I'm just changing your water!

Re: The New Crew
Hahahahaha, I know that face! It’s intimidating enough when you know your guy’s a bluffer. I bet it’s a hell of a challenge getting him out of his enclosure! And they don’t like people touching their things :D

Re: The New Crew
Duuuuuuude so cool!!!!!! Nice group there!!

Re: The New Crew
Hey y'all. The new crew is doing just great. The scrub is still pretty unpredictable but he's biting less. He hasn't been hanging out as much lately though. He's almost always in his hides now. I wonder if the cooler temps are slowing him down. The boas are as chill as can be. I love handling them. I'm really enjoying these three and love watching them grow. Gotta take some more pics. :)
-
Yes Ziggy! More pictures please :D :gj:

Re: The New Crew
They’re all looking so awesome! That boa is a stunner. Are you deliberately cooling everyone down a bit this winter or letting it happen naturally as ambient temps in the room cool? And do you think you’ll fast Klauss this year? I have so many questions!

I am kinda cooling everyone this year. I haven't put the heater in the critter room yet like I normally do this time of year but I will if it gets too cold. My ambient temps are in the low-mid 70s during the day and as low as 70 at night. I won't totally fast them but I'll probably only offer food once a month for the winter. This is my first winter cooling so we'll see how it goes. Do you feed normally or dial back your feedings a little during the winter? Not sure how much winter you get out in Cali though. :)

This will only be my second winter with the kids, so I’m still figuring everything out! Last year, my temps weren’t quite dialed in for the scrub and his cage got kind of cool in the winter...so he hid and slept a lot, as I recall. And my Dumeril’s was already feeding so infrequently that she seemed to take most of the winter off anyway.
Now that their setups are stable and my herpstat has proven itself...I feel like I should drop their temps a bit. Seems like most keepers do?
Although, the scrub seems to like warmer temps. I set his basking spot to 95 during the day and 83 at night and he loves to sleep right under it. All day, every day, he just rotates from hot perch to warm hide to cool perch. Especially at night, he curls up in his branches as close to the heat lamp as he can get! I periodically check the forecast in the Tanimbar Islands and it doesn’t seem like it cools down much at night. Maybe I’ll just try it for a bit and see if there are any behavioral changes!
Food wise, I think your plan is a good one. I won’t fast them, but offer less frequently. My Dum needs to catch up on some growth lost from being such a picky baby ;) Although, eating her leftovers is making my scrub fat[emoji52]

Re: The New Crew
Looking good.
Sorry the Scrub is a bit of a PITA. Are the known to grow out of that, or is that kind of their modus operandi?
Yeah, you cannot go wrong with boas. If they are chill now, they will only get calmer and more confident as they get bigger.
Behira was chill from day one, but she's much more confident now. Big difference between 400G and 1,200G. Excited to see what another 4,000G does to her demeanor. Probably won't change much, but that's fine with me. I like her just fine the way she is.
Feliz, at a whopping 135G, could not be calmer if he tried. However, it will be pretty cool to see him a little more confident. I am still very gentle with him as he's working the "it's a big world" thing.
Keep working with those two and they will keep rewarding you.
You seem as happy as I am that you got into Boas.

Re: The New Crew
Thanks y'all. We're all blessed with some really cool critters.
@ Dave- I have to admit boas are the best thing to happen to me since carpets :). They're really easy to love. They put me more at ease when I handle them than any of my other snakes and they both have a very calming effect on me.
As far as scrubs go I've seen some that are pretty chill and some that are jerks. I think it just comes with the territory sometimes. I hope Klauss calms down as an adult but I'm prepared to accept him for who he is. None of my other snakes are nearly as fiery as he is, and sometimes he is a real PITA, but I love him anyway. He does have some days when he behaves perfectly but you still can't let your guard down with him. I kinda wanted a snake that was more challenging and I seem to have found one. Hopefully we'll trust each other more when he's 10'+. I am learning more about him though. For example, he's more likely to strike, bite, and musk if I try to remove him from a perch than he is when I take him out of one of his hides.

Hahahahaha, yep! It’s always best to sneak-attack while their sleeping under a hide! Pop stopped sleeping in his larger hide for like 9 months because he realized that was the easiest place from which to scoop him up😂 Pretty sure someone in the FB group once told me, “never let them get higher ground on you.” Hope he lays off you a bit soon. Mine is super docile and it’s still a fight to the death to get him out every time🙄
Why can’t we have a pet who just comes when you call??
-
Ziggy, I Love seeing your collection, it’s a special one for sure. :)
