Ball python sleeping?
I have been in and out of my room throughout the day, and I noticed my baby bp has been hiding under his paper towel substrate (his temporary container hides are not doing it for him anymore, I know, I'm going to get better secure hides this week) all day, and I saw him wrapped up in a little ball. His head is kind of leaning into his stomach, but still breathing. At first, I kind of wondered if he was okay. So I opened his door and lifted the paper towel he was under, and sure enough, he was sleeping. Didn't look up at me like he usually does, didn't stir, nothing. Just laid there like a messed up cinnamon roll. He started waking up and I left him alone, and he went back to sleep after about 15 minutes.
So, I actually figured maybe snakes actually dream or have nightmares when they sleep. I know tons of you wondered what snakes dream of too.
What do you think they dream about when they sleep?:snake:

I'm guessing they dream about lots of things, but things limited to their experiences. For example, a python that was captive bred wouldn't dream about the wild since it had never been there and they wouldn't even know it exists.

Yeah, you have a point XD You know those weird dreams where you're somewhere strange and you don't know where you're at? I think it could almost be something related, but maybe not something as specific as their natural habitat?
-
I'd LIKE to think they dream but it's hard to know...it would sure be an indication if they'd do like dogs do- twitch & make various motions that suggest they're
dreaming about doing stuff, but I can't say I've ever seen a sleeping snake do any such things- have any of you???
First, it's hard to tell IF & WHEN they're sleeping, but even if you assume they are, I've never seen them do anything to suggest dreams, like tail twitching or
moving their scutes. I don't think this proves that they DON'T dream either though: maybe there are mechanisms that keep them still while sleeping, so they
are harder to find by predators? (ie. maybe the ones that sleep totally still survived to breed whereas the ones that gave themselves away got wiped out?)
I DO wish they'd find a way to tell us though...;) 'cause now I want to know.

All animals are different. Even humans. When we dream, we may do certain things, while others may not. I've seen this in both cats and dogs. Cats react differently when you wake them up in a middle of a dream or nightmare. Sometimes they'll greet you like any other, or they'll jump out of their minds just by the slightest touch. Now I've seen this with the same cat, whether or not he acted in his sleep. I know of dogs who dream when they sleep, but sometimes do or don't act out.
As for movement, I noticed my bp's head being in different positions whenever I checked on him every other hour since he's been sleeping all day. But what do we know?? I just assumed, really. But I guess we'll never know the true answer, huh?:D

Re: Ball python sleeping?
I one time thought Flame was dead because she was laying with her head and neck out of her hide, like she always does when she is hanging out in ambush mode 80% of the time, but she was laying like dead weight with her head resting completely on the substrate, out in the open in broad daylight. I had to poke her like 4 times to check if she was dead before she finally woke up!
Ever since then, I can usually tell when she is sleeping because she completely lays relaxed on the substrate and her head is just like dead weight laying on s pillow.

Ah, don't they just love to freak us out and make us worry? XD It seems like innocent noodles do that more often than I thought. I swear, they really do make us parents. We love them, but gosh, they really do get the better of us

Years ago on another forum there was a member whose large boa sometimes slept upside down, on his back, nearly giving her a heart attack- he looked dead!
In the snake's defense, his former owners had abused him & he was also significantly overweight...I have a hunch that position was more comfortable for him &
maybe helped his circulation? Sure didn't help his owner though, lol...:snake:

Cats and dogs have done that before too. And it's scary. Sometimes it doesn't even relate to sleep. I remember I had a bracelet as a collar for my cat. I woke up in the middle of the night and I saw him laying on the floor. Sometimes he likes to flop down when he's in a hyper mood, then he'll start playing with whatever is on the ground. Anywho, I noticed he tried walking, but whenever he did, his wrist just failed and he laid back down. I thought he fell off the chair and somehow broke his paw. But it turns out, his arm was just stuck in the bracelet, I had to cut the bracelet off since I couldn't get his arm out. Nearly gave me a heart attack

I don’t think snakes have the brain capability to be able to dream.

Maybe. But if they ever are able to dream or if they did, just imagine the things they would dream about:D

Who knows? I'd still rather over-estimate their abilities than to under-estimate them...wouldn't you?
While apparently they have a small brain, they also don't need as large a brain to control as many things (like arms & legs & speech, for example). But they do
have enough of a brain to learn and remember their way around.
There have been so many cases where we "think" we have all the answers when we actually don't...look how much our knowledge of other animals has changed
over the years, & how much better we treat certain species (like dogs) because of that. We're still learning incredible things about squids & eels & all sorts of life-
forms...but society has it in their head to hate snakes, so they're not high on the research list, & it's also a challenge to find ways of testing them.

It's sad too. People kill snakes because they apparently attacked them out of nowhere. Snakes don't do that. They only attack out of defense because they feel threatened. It's an instinct when they have something hovered above them and they believe they'll be eaten. Just really wish people didn't mess with them and kill them as sport. It's sick:tears:
If only more people took the time to understand, huh? But hell. That's humanity for ya. No wonder why animals are much better than us. Honestly, I trust them more than people- you can call me a weirdo on that, it's true XD

We kill each other for no reason, how can we be expected not to kill animals? I think sometimes we’d be better off if we only had primal thoughts.

Exactly! Honestly, I know how people are towards each other. But what really gets on my last nerve is that they dare choose to hurt animals. Animals are so pure and understanding. They don't do anything. Nothing. Yet, they are used for money, breeding, sport, and even sick entertainment through torture. You can trust a dog better than a human. But people look down upon pitbulls because of what people use them for. And it's because people are stupid enough to make them that way. It's never the animals fault. It's humans.
Sorry to go off a little bit. This a subject I'm really passionate about.

Don’t even get me started. Lol! I did an argumentative research paper about Breed Specific Legislation last semester. I hate people. Love the misunderstood.

Tell me all about it:D I'm really happy because the humane society I work for neuters and spays all of our animals. We are also a non-kill shelter. People have gotten mad at us for not holding breeder animals. But not like we'll change anything;)

Re: Ball python sleeping?
Trust me, I hate people too. I'm really antisocial, but I always socialize with the cats at my work. I find it harder to understand people, but it's really easy for me to understand an animal. Probably why I don't have any...uhh..."friends." But it's great, because I find animal friends even better than human friends:D

Yeah, don't expect me to say anything nice about them either. If you knew me in person, you'd really hear the best bits of me not really being nice about any of them. Lucky for me, no babies will be any addition at all in the household XD
I don't mean to be harsh, while I, myself, never understand people who actually like kids or babies. But hey, we're all different

Haha. You should hear my husband and I at home. We sit and talk :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: about everyone and everything under the sun. We call ourselves equal opportunity haters. Nah, don't worry about it. I don't mind. I'm pretty open about that kind of stuff. My race is not a big deal, and I'm not religious nor too into mental capacity. Sexual orientation is something I kind of put some attention too (I'm not able to feel attraction towards anybody). But don't sweat it; everybody has the right to speak their own opinion:):)

They just happen. I think excess estrogen plays a part. I used to get them every 6 months like clockwork. Now I’ve only had 2 in the last 6 years. That I could feel anyway. Lots of women have them, they just don’t cause pain all of the time.

I'm sorry to hear that, it doesn't sound fun. Do you know what ages they affect? And how common they are? I honestly don't know anything about ovarian cysts. Or anything about ovary type stuff to be honest XD

Ball python sleeping?
I believe anyone of reproductive age and then I believe they go away with menopause. Some people have POS, which is polycystic ovarian syndrome and they have numerous cysts all the time. They’re very common.
The cysts can also twist and cut off blood supply to the ovaries, which is called torsion. The ovaries can also become cancerous. They’re pains in the butt. Lol! I would rather just have them removed since I’m done having children, but then you go into instant menopause.

So sorry to hear you're in the ER & going thru all this...ouch! Hope they get you all fixed up & quickly back to feeling good...
Tough choices too, "instant menopause" or keep getting this issue...bleah! Neither one is a great option.
