First BP
Just wanted to show you my first Ball Python.
He/She is home since 3 days now and have already handled it 15 min per days. I've heard about the 1 week rule but h'es pretty docile right now
Also, he/she eat his first frozen mice at home today.
It's suposed to be a Lesser, bought it in a petshop (i've taken this little snake out of hell).
Time for some picture
This snake is so cutehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...99d094bacd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...80cefe7d87.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...81991b2e1a.jpg

welcome to the forum!
def looks like a Butter/Lesser. :)
trust me: please allow the lil baby some peace and quiet to get adjusted to their new home. 15 min/day is a lot for a new keeper and a new baby in a new home. also don't be surprised if they don't eat for you right away; it's very common for new beeps.

Re: First BP
Thanks for the reply,
Yeah, he/she ate a frozen mice today, not at the first attempt, i had need to put the mice head in boil water for 4-5 seconds and he took it right away.
Now he/she will be all alone for the next 48 hours at least

Re: First BP
Remember not to handle him for a couple of days after he eats though. Regurgitation is really serious for snakes so you don't want to do anything that might cause it. :please:
-
Re: First BP
Of course
Don't worry, he/she ate that mice at 8:30AM and now the snake will be all alone In his hide for the next 48 hours at least
Plus, i don't know a lot about morph so if you say it's a lesser-butter i'm trusting you haha

it's a Butter/Lesser. i'd stake my reputation on it. ;)
Butter and Lesser are the same gene, but they were proved out by different people who named them different things; same gene, different lines.

As the others have said, let your snake acclimate before doing any more handling. As a first time keeper it's important to trust experienced keepers.
Let your snake settle in for a while, not 48 hours. I highly suggest holding off on handling until your snake has eaten three consecutive meals without refusal.
BPs can be very finicky eaters and get stressed easily. You have 25+ years to handle your snake. Let it acclimate. Your snakes health should be prioritized over your desire to handle an animal that doesn't want to be handled in the first place.

Re: First BP
Thanks for replying.
You are completely right, I was saying "at least 48hours".
Now I will of course wait until he ate three consecutive meat. That way it will be safer for his future.
Appreciate all the tips :D love this forum so far

Sounds good!!! I know how tempting it is to want to spend time with your new pet, but you really need to resist. It's only a few weeks.
We're just looking out for you and your snake. We've seen about a billion and a half threads saying "my new BP won't eat" and find out the animal is stressed, often from handling.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, we're happy to help. We love these animals and want your first experience to be a positive one.

I could also go a bit bigger

Looks like it should be good. Do you have a scale? Do you know the weight of your snake?
I ask because there's two basic rules of thumb for feeding juvenile BPs.
1) feed prey approx 10-15% of the snakes weight
2) feed prey items approx the same width as the snake at its widest point or a bit bigger
But jyst by looking at your pic you appear good to go. Just by what I see in the pic it's an adult mouse. So that's good. Lots of new keepers feed prey too small, but you seem to be all set! :gj:
-
Re: First BP
Yep, i've seen that it need to be fed MAXIMUM 1.5x the size of his bigger part
This mice is aprox as large as his bigger part

Nice job!!! I would stick to 7 days though. Especially now, since by refusing on day 5 your snake basically told you 5 is too soon.
If you offer too often it can stress the snake and lead to more refusals.
So stick to a 7 day schedule and you should be good to go

I think adult mice are probably fine. It's tough to see in the picture, especially on my phone.
Does the mouse leave a noticeable lump in the snakes stomach after it is swallowed?
-
Re: First BP
Nah, not a noticeable lump
Last week feed was noticeable, but this week adult mouse is like if he ate nothing or almost nothing
What should i go for?

Ok, well you can try switching to rats soon. It's best to switch to rats earlier than later, anyway. This way you'll never have to feed multiple prey items. A male BP will be fine on Smalls his whole life, and a female will be fine on Mediums.
But for now, you're probably looking at rat fuzzies or pups. Maybe fuzzies to start then pups after a handful of meals and some growth
-
Re: First BP
Thanks for the advice,
I will look at the size next time I hit the store this weekend

Re: First BP
2 things I can suggest.
1. needs 2 hides. One on each side, hot and cool sides. Definitely needs more clutter. Too much open space for a ball python.
2. Temp and humidity gauge - accurites are a good choice to monitor.
What's the wire running in the tank for?

Hi,
I have both thing to monitor the humidity and the temp.
The wire that you see is the thermometer probe.
For an hide at the cold spot would be a great idea I will look into it

Re: First BP
Don't worry for the space, normally I've a big tree branch that is in there. But when i feed i just get it out so it's easier

Re: First BP
I got ya, but something like the picture attached would be better suited over 1 big branch as ball pythons are not climbers(can they, yes, should they, no)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0255a880ad.jpg

Re: First BP
yeah, i was thinking about adding some leaves in there!
thanks for the tips
some leaves + cold spot hide, alright!

Re: First BP
I'd go with a coco substrate, like reptichip or prococo. I use reptichip myself but either are perfectly fine.
