Rats thawed!
This morning I woke up to find that my freezer was unplugged. It was plugged in last night, but it must've been knocked out. My rats have thawed. Is it okay to re-freeze them? It's only been 8 hours at most.

If they are not super cold as in probably still frozen in the center you may have a problem. Smell them, if the smell off at all you have an issue.

As long as they're still good and cold they're fine.
However, if they're not still good and cold I'd suggest taking the unfortunate loss and tossing them.
If they smell off at all, toss them.
Bottom line: when in doubt, throw it out.

Re: Rats thawed!
Also keep in mind depending how theyre packaged, you may end up with a big block of rats stuck together when they refreeze so you'll have to thaw a bunch at a time. Of course thats not an issue if you have a bigger collection and thaw a bunch at a time anyways.

Good point.
I guess that's another benefit to packing them in small bags of 3-5 prey items/bag. It also helps to keep them fresh and avoid freezer burn from constantly opening/closing the same bag. It

What's going on...? I think this is the third thread like this? :confusd:

Re: Rats thawed!
Something is up. My freezer acted up on me two weeks ago and I had to feed off a bunch. They were still good, but I didn't want to refreeze them. Maybe it is a plot by the rat breeders. Hmmmm....

I picked up on that too. Odd. :confusd:

Eek, I came home to find the freezer has been unplugged again. I don't know how long for. It's feeding day, though. I was wondering how many do you think I can feed to my 1 BP at once? They're weaned rats and he's almost 3 feet long, 1 1/2 years old I think.

I'm gonna need to secure the plug, and get more rats. I think I'll throw these ones out, but I wanna see how many I can give him today. Also, do you think my cats might want the unused rats? :P

Had something similar happen a few weeks ago. The breaker went and did not notice for a day or two. Sadly ended up tossing all of the feeders. I rather not risk it when it comes to food.

Got any invites to a "potluck"? If you hurry, you can make stew or rat-chili. :weirdface

Maybe the cats are jealous of the attention the big noodles are getting and are trying to rebel. More rats to the feline powers.
Seriously tho. Make sure one of the cats isn't trying to get behind the fridge or mess with the cord. Sucks that you have to clear things out But better safe than sorry

I wouldn't try to feed your snake as many as he can eat. Feed an appropriately sized meal and take the loss. And secure that plug!
