    Axanthic IJ/Papuan carpet python
About a month ago in another thread I hinted around to an upcoming purchase. At the time I had only sent an inquiry email and was waiting for a response. Since that time, I was placed on the wait list, and a few emails back and forth each week for the past few weeks discussing the animal and the deal. He is now paid for and waiting for one more meal before being shipped.

This little guy is coming from Eric Burke of EBMorelia. The pairing was a het axanthic X het axanthic. 10 eggs were laid on 02/25/18. They hatched on 04/20/18. Of the 10, 3.1 were axanthic. Eric is keeping back the female. Nick mutton of inland reptiles got first pick of the boys and I got my choice of the remaining two. Eric might also hold back the last male.

There has been some recent debate about the axanthic gene and whether it is incomplete-dom or recessive and how to label the animals. Likewise there has also been debate about them being called IJ’s or Papuan carpet pythons. Either way he is the homogeneous version of the gene.

He is currently un-named but will probably get one after he arrives. I’m leaning towards the possibility of Apep.

Here are a few pics copied from EB morelia’s facebook page.

that's a really cool animal. congrats!

i see Eric on the forum sometimes and it's nice to know who Nick Mutton himself may go to for Morelia's. that's good company to be in. :gj:

Edit: also really interesting to see how the debate between incomplete dom vs recessive plays out.

    Thanks all!

I was at carpetfest the beginning of june and supposedly Nick Mutton was there but I didn't get a chance to meet or chat with him. I did get to talk to Eric and Owen some. While Eric was showing me his snake room I got to see this little guy. He is a feisty little thing, which made me want him even more.

Not much new to add. He was supposed to arrive this week but the weather was a little too warm. The waiting game continues, but I don't mind since it's what is best for the little guy.

I hate the waiting game too but it'll be well worth it.

Well the wait is almost over! He shipped out today and should be one of my packages arriving tomorrow. :D

I was supposed to have another really nice snake showing up tomorrow too, but just got a call from the breeder saying a major issue arose and asking if we can delay shipping till our issue can get sorted out. :(

He came from Pennsylvania which is the state just north of me. He was only about 2 hrs away but shipping was only $40. To drive that trip it would have been way more in gas and tolls. After looking at the shipping tracker he never even went to one of the major hubs such as Indianapolis or Memphis.

I still need to figure out a name for him. I'm considering either Apep or Balor, but could be open to other suggestions.

    Apep - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apep
    Balor - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balor

You picked a top notch critter 67. I believe you'll really enjoy the Morelia experience. Looking forward to lots of pics of this guy.

I just realized I haven't updated his thread in a while. I think he is about to go into blue in the next few days, so his scales are looking a little dry.

I feel bad that I haven't given him a name yet. Maybe once he is out of QT he will earn one. Currently my wife just calls him "Mr. Bitey Face". He recently got upgraded from a hatchling tub to a tank with more arboreal options.

Nope I don't mind. I feel these forums are here for open discussions.

When I was researching these to see if they were even feasible I was having a hard time finding any forsale or any that had already sold. They are a good bit harder to find than the axanthic coastals. The only price I could find was Paul Harris from Ukpythons. I think he had them listed at 600 pounds ($750). After I found out Eric was producing them I told my wife I was expecting this one to be roughly $800 but was budgeting to spend up to $1,200 if I needed to. I went through the process of getting on the waiting list, waiting for them to take meals and prove they were thriving, picked out the one I wanted, a bunch of emails back and forth discussing snakes, shipping dates and such. When the little guy was almost ready to get shipped out I realized we were missing part of the transaction. So one of my final emails had "btw I dont think we ever discussed cost and payment." When he told me the cost was $400 for that awesome looking little guy I was more than happy to send payment over right away.

Whats crazy is how much a double het axanthic granite is going for. I think a pair is currently around $1500 for non-visual morphs. The visuals of those are even more $$$ but really stellar looking.

Dang I'd say you did pretty good for $400. That Axanthic is to die for. I've been thinking about picking up a second noodle and just when I think I've made up my mind I see a post like this haha.

Sadly this thread won't be progressing any further. Last night when I was checking on everyone I found that he had passed. I'm pretty devastated as he looked normal and healthy when I checked on him earlier in the day.

So being new here, what could've happened to such a young (and healthy looking) critter?

I had a necropsy done and it appears to have been kidney related.

I was going through everything I did with him trying to figure out what I could have done wrong. The cost of the necropsy was totally worth the closure when the vet told me it was probably congenital and there was nothing I did wrong or could have done to prevent it. I also informed the breeder about it just incase it happens again, that could point to a potential problem with the line.
