The results from the necropsy are in....
So in the time frame since my last post, I had 2 more snakes die, thats 4/9 that I got from that batch I bought on craigslist. The necropsy came back and they died of bacteria, Salmonella and Ecoli........needless to say I am relived it wasnt anything I did, and relieved its not a virus. But now I know.....really upset about this but it happens and you must go on......now I can give my little girl a reason, might help her deal better...

Wow that is terrible and good all in the same time, horrible that your family had to go thru losing your new friends, but good to know what is going on. I hope your daughter isn't to upset ~healing hugs from across the miles ~

A spoon full of sugar does help the medicine go down;), and who doesn't love a big ball, hope the person who sold you those snakes buys a nice meal with that money and chokes on it (Well a little bit at least;))

My daughter gets the sugar, my wife gets the wine, I get the rum. I am upset but I honestly believe they didn't know, I could be wrong but I try to see the best in people.

That's always a good thing I do too but sometimes (unfortunately I seen people at their worse) just glad it isn't contagious and you can move on knowing you did everything you could:gj:

Did the vet suggest any kind of preventive treatment for the ones that are still alive? They were likely all exposed.

Very sorry that you lost even more, glad you got your answer and it wasn’t your bad or a possible virus. Sorry you and your little girl had to experience that. Thanks for following up with us. Best of luck from here out!

I'm so sad to hear you lost more...I'm glad you got some answers from the vet, but it's still hard for your daughter to process, I'm sure.
I shudder to think how so many snakes from one place could all be so sick from this stuff...one imagines they were kept in deplorable filth &/or fed roadkill.
For what it's worth, it never occurred to me to think you were in any way responsible...I mean, you didn't have them very long.

She said to just keep very clean and the others should be fine and long as not items were shared between the snakes, or they werent kept in the same tank/tub together. I told her I always wash my hands thoroughly when I switch from snake to snake during cleaning and use smell less hand sanitize. She said the others should be fine then because its not something the others can get airborn.

Thank you, that does mean something to me. I try to be as responsible as possible with these snakes, and spend tons of money making sure they have everything they need. I was so worried it was something I had done, It took a lot for me to not keep checking on all my snakes until I got word back.

I'm also wondering if some of these were "super-bug" mutations? I mean these are all pretty common pathogens. But of course they also "combined forces". :tears:
Hope all the rest stay healthy & thrive, you've been through enough, & they surely have.

What causes these issues? I'm so confused on how they go so sick.

Had to be filthy cages and/or filthy food. Not like it was just ONE snake, either. Not people you want to buy from...

Oh, believe me, so am I! It's just horrible how some people [don't!] care for their animals.
You never know, not all have equally-good immune systems functioning- snakes survive all sorts of adversity in the wild, but as pets, they shouldn't have to.
At least now with you they've got a fighting chance.

The ones that died were under 400 grams, except the Pied, he was 576, all the big ones I got from them are still alive.

Condolences for losing your snakes. I have been through several episodes with ill BPs and have lost two to RIs myself.
I'm curious if your vet was able to give you an actual cause of death aside from the bacteria found. Typically what causes death is a respiratory infection or some concentration of said bacteria infecting tissue (or the blood). I'm not sure about E. Coli, but I know many snakes carry Salmonella without suffering any symptoms or harm. Did they tell you where they collected the sample from? Did your snakes ever exhibit any wheezing, drooling, etc?
Strangely enough, when snakes do get infections, it's often from natural bacteria that they carry. The infection comes from them getting run down by bad husbandry and conditions allowing those natural bacteria to infect. It's odd that several snakes would die at the same time in those instances as these infections develop at different paces and don't necessarily transmit easily from one snake to another.
Your case still sounds more like it was a virus. Did they check for IBD? Did you see any evidence of mites on any of them? Mites are a common vector that could have carried a virus to multiple snakes.

No mites at all, and it definitely was IBD, they found out the cause of death from the necrops, it was Ecoli, they had it and salmonella that started acting up and the stress from the change of home is likely what caused them to die. Their immune system couldnt handle the Ecoli and salmonella acting up and they died from it combined with stress.

Did you mean to say it WAS (?) or WAS NOT (?) "IBD"?

That's what I thought...;)

Re: The results from the necropsy are in....
It sounds like they were given a general diagnosis of septicemia due to an infection with the E.Coli. It is still strange to see it happen in several snakes at the same time, even if they did have poor husbandry.
