Hunted and bitten by a large constrictor!
Shamefully, I have been tricked by my dumeril's boa. He was laying sprawled out, as is one of his new habits. He didn't respond to moving his tub, he didn't respond to opening his tub, he didn't respond to the presence of my hand. Was he ok? Was he dead? So, I touched his face. MISTAKE. For a second he still didn't respond - then before I knew it, one juvenile constrictor was attached to my hand and attempting to pull himself up to coil it. He ambushed me!
Well, he was easily dislodged and it barely hurt, but someone is getting hook trained. He clearly thinks it serves me right for waiting EIGHT whole days to feed him and will happily do it again.

I hate it when you stroke them and they don't move ,I've never touched the face first tho[emoji10]
I always stroke the back or tail just incase there in food mode, doesn't hurt that much at that age at least
Great looking boa by the way

Well, he usually doesn't mind his face being touched and the rest of him was covered by fake vines. AKA I foolishly trusted him and took the fastest route to checking on him. 100% my own fault, but up to now I hadn't applied any caution to interacting with him because he's super chill and worst case scenario was, as seen, basically no worse damage than a paper cut. Buut now we're switching to caution and appropriate training before his face gets big enough to be somewhat damaging. I also don't want him to bite people who are not me even at his current size.
He is very pretty, thank you both! He also is a sweetheart, just a hungry one.

Yep. A little love tap on the back to make sure they are awake is always a good thing. That way you don't get a love tap yourself.

At least you've got an eater! A bunch of Dums around here are picky as can be.
Glad you survived the bloodshed. ;)

Most of my boas don't mind there faces touched either , I've a couple that I wouldn't quite trust , but I always stroke there back first, a 7ft boa bite is not fun especially when they leave teeth in,
Really glad she's eating well for you

Re: Hunted and bitten by a large constrictor!
He’s not my least picky eater, but that would be because I have a garter snake that I had to wrestle plastic wrap out of his mouth on Sunday. Shame on me for leaving the salmon on top of plastic wrap while I tried to feed him, shame on him for grabbing the plastic instead of the salmon. He was very determined to eat that plastic, wrapping his body around my hand and trying to push me away as I pride open his mouth. He also flung salmon and pinky guts over me and the wall in the process. I was reminded of a number of important lessons this weekend...

Re: Hunted and bitten by a large constrictor!
The Dumeril’s refuses food while in shed, the ball python refused once ever because he was too lazy to strike and not particularly hungry, and the garter snakes refuse precisely never. Overall, I have a food-obsessed lot.

Nothing to add here but thanks for all the wonderful laughs-

"Human! How DARE you not feed me for 8 days. You know I demand more every 20 min!"
Funny stories all around, though, thanks for the good time:D Paarthurnax apparently still strikes when he's in blue, but misses quite a bit, so when he saw the rat in front of him on Saturday, he ended up trying to wrap the tongs for a moment, before realizing they were freezing. oops.

Oh man, this made me laugh! The photo of him on his hide - exactly like Memphis. They could be twins! Do you ever just feel him staring at you from that position? Memphis just buried herself earlier, and today's handling day. Think I'll go in with a paper towel roll first until we can get a hook. 🤣

He stares at me ALL the time. His face just follows you most of the time as you walk past. Except for the last few days, since he's now adopted waiting motionlessly so that he may munch hands.
BRINGER OF FOOD~YOU HAVE FAILED ME! No, no do not walk away. Wait, no do you have food this time?? Humaaaan!
