Really?? At Petco???
So I was killing some time in town while waiting for my girlfriend to get off work and stopped into Petco. I wasn't able to get a decent picture of the snake, but it looked surprisingly good for being at Petco. Anyway, I was surprised to find this there...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c13342d16f.jpg

That was my original thought too. I kinda figured anybody willing to drop 8 hundo on an animal knows better than to buy from the big box stores. But, somebody with money and limited knowledge will probably bring it home, along with the BP starter kit and a head full of Petco advice.

Re: Really?? At Petco???
Was it really a Puma? Just wondering since the pic is a banana lol
It'll sell when they drop the price due to it not selling... or a sale comes along. Fingers crossed it goes to someone with a halfway decent knowledge of snake care.
I wonder... if they're selling it for $800, how much did they purchase it for? There's a lot of background here that I'd be curious about. Like, what makes a breeder sell a puma to Petco instead of posting online? What were the circumstances?
It's not a great indicator really. Just means the market is becoming more and more saturated.
-
I'm seeing Pumas for about $300-400....$800...no thanks.
Heck i picked up Dottie my high white pied girl for $200 on a black friday deal. I was there before they even opened and beat out 2 other people by about 10 mins haha.
-
My petco has a really nice northern blue tongue skink for 500 bucks...was tempted... really tempted.

Its always like that there, just another reason not to get your animals from them. They sell Normals for $100+, i got paarthurnax for $20.
Though, one time i was there, they had the most gorgeous banana bp. Caught me way off guard. Thing was decent size and on sale, probably because it wasnt selling. Such a shame.

The guy i saw was on sale for $60 (the normal, not the banana). The only morph ive seen there other than the banana was a yellowbelly. I honestly wonder where they get these morphs from.

Our PETSMART right now has 3.
On one the sign says "Ball Python" and it's pretty small for $59.99.
The other one says "Fancy Ball Python" and again very small baby for $99.99.
Then another one that is pretty big (i'm bad at size) but looks to be at least 2 1/2 to 3 feet long that says "Ball Python" for $59.99.
That's where my son got his Mia. She was "supposedly" a fancy ball and at that time he had no clue what a "FANCY" was but he liked her color so he paid $99.99 for her and for all the issues we had with her when we first got her it was definitely a lesson learned on where to and where not to buy an animal from.

Fancy means morph. Around here I see mostly pastels and common morphs labeled fancy. The rarer morphs are usually labeled and higher priced, they had a “banana” ball python recently for $299.99. much better to just buy from an online breeder imo.

I’ve seen everything from bels to spinnerblasts, even a pied at the petco’s and petsmart’s by my house (I live in the Chicago area). I truly understand how people could get excited, but me personally. I could never buy from them, not knowing what I know. Let alone with the interweb at my fingers. But yeah, the list I’ve seen is long. To bad the big chains squeezed so many specialty shops out of business. But it still blows my mind to see all the crazy morphs they get.

Honestly around here, sadly even the only specialty shops around are kind of overpriced. Online is the best for me, though if i can buy from a local breeder/sellee, I do.

As far as I know each shop or shops in the area can and will contract with breeders and wholesalers. At least that’s how it was for aquatic life when I was heavy in the fish game.
One shop had deaths door fish and then one a mile away had great stuff. M
It delends on tne managers and employees. I’d never buy one but people do.
Some employeds care some
could care less. It’s like that anywhere.
I know why these places get a bad wrap but at times do feel bad for the folks there who care and try and earn a living.

I definitely don't know about morphs enough to say for sure. I went on morphmarket and WOBP and looked around. The one in the store looked very similar to some of what I saw online, but they varied fairly drastically. This one was mostly cream colored, long dorsal stripe, next to no patterning, if any. Obviously it's anybody's guess, especially without a pic.

More like, walk into Petsmart and say, "Yes, can i get a dozen feeder parakeets please"
On another one of my threads, i mentioned how i walked into the pet shop by me where i usually buy all my rodents and asked the manager who was helping customers if she has gotten her order of feeder kittens in yet as i need about 3. One of the customers just gave me this blank stare lol. The manager laughed and had to let the customers know i was just kidding. I guess another of her customers did that but asked if they got their shipment of feeder parakeets in when there was a lot of customers in there. The customers all asked if this pet shop really sells parakeets as feeders. It's so fun getting people all worked up lol.

we don't sell by individual morph. They are three groups. Normals, advanced and unusual. Three price points. No more no less.
Seriously if you have Petco questions just ask. I will answer.

they are like a puppy mill but with snakes. They are mass produced, come to us small, and sometimes messed up. My Odyn was one of them. I wish Petco would reach out to reputable breeders and only order as necessary. I'm happy BPs are not available right now to even get. Grrrrr, just grrrr to them.

The reason is because the company would not make cash which is really all corporate cares about. Breeders are not going to wholesale their nice stuff. Now as for normals, they might wholesale those assuming they get many if any and also depending what they are het for.
Heck i was on the local reptile FB page and someone posted a poor little GTP at a local Petco, i think in federal Way or Auburn...somewhere down south. They didnt even give the poor guy a stick to sit on. He was curled up on the floor inside a half log hide. Not sure if someone went to rescue it. I felt bad for him and if i had the caging and the cash, i probably would have gone to rescue him. I know its not a good idea as it just reinforces that said animals will sell and they will just order another which will be kept in the same condition but i felt so sorry for that little baby snake. Was like Dottie my pied BP, when i got her, she was in the back room in a little tiny cube that was half filled with cold spilled water in a mess of slop. They had to assist feed her as they said she didnt eat and was very bitey......2 days after i got her home, she ate like a horse every 3 days and has only bit me once in almost 5 years and that was because my finger smelled like a rat as i was messing with them and forgot to wash my hand lol.

The Petco near me (the one in this thread) had a GTP about a year ago, maybe longer, I stink at time, hahaha. Anyway, same thing, no perch, nothing. Just a water dish and half log hide. I googled GTPs and showed the employee that in EVERY picture the GTP is perched in that famous GTP "pose". Then showed care sheets, etc... which discussed that they are an arboreal species. The employee said they can only put what corporate allows in the tank. I was furious!
...went back a few weeks later, no GTP. I asked if it sold...nope it died. I called corporate but gave up after hours of being run in circles.

I gotta say, the new-ish girl at my local store is actually pretty knowledgeable. I had a good 10 minute chat with her the other day and she knew her stuff pretty well. She gets frustrated that she's limited by management as far as what she can do to help troubleshoot and improve conditions, but clearly cares and it shows with her interaction with customers.
Anyway, @sunnieskys, it's good to see more good employees like you working there and being an asset to the company, the customers and most importantly, the animals.
I just wish employees like you you were more the rule than the exception.
As alway, thanks for being one of the good ones!!!

this pix is from Sept 2015. i was driving Miss Daisy (my boss lady) and had time to kill while she was in a meeting, so i stopped by the Petco next to the Tacoma Mall. they had a Shiny GTP! i don’t remember the price, there was a low branch decor, it seemed in fair condition but it was on the ground. it looked super humid and there a few pieces of shed as u can see.

I havent stepped foot in a Petsmart or Petco in i dont know how. I usually end up getting pissed off at either how stupid the employees are or the excuses they give for not keeping their reptiles set up correctly (in the case of someone knowledgeable, corporates fault).

That is still a pretty piss poor setup. I mean how hard is it to make a little perch with a dremel, a couple stick on cable clamps and a piece of oak dowel. Or even an over sized PVC one is better than nothing along with a little plastic plant to give it security. That GTP is grounded so it's either too hot (which i doubt), pregnant (which i doubt), or is stressed (which i think). GTPs seem to stress pretty easy and i wouldnt be surprised if that snake didnt eat and dies within a month. I mean heck, i was worried about getting Pat as i heard horror stories about keeping GTPs but after having Pat for almost 5 months and seeing him go from a little 12 inch about as thick as a Bic pen baby to now about 2 feet long and a little over a 1/2 inch thick, I found GTPs really arent that hard to care for if you just give them essentials which really isnt too much. Knock on wood of course.

this pix is from Sept 2015. i was driving Miss Daisy (my boss lady) and had time to kill while she was in a meeting, so i stopped by the Petco next to the Tacoma Mall. they had a Shiny GTP! i don’t remember the price, there was a low branch decor, it seemed in fair condition but it was on the ground. it looked super humid and there a few pieces of shed as u can see.

No idea as I don't do them. They are a joke and do not bring people in. A waste of marketing. I'm constantly on education with my staff on animals. Don't sell an animal if you don't know what they need.
