oh just post the link to the article. see: https://www.yahoo.com/news/oklahoma-...042920050.html
or get fancy and post some or all of the story in a quote tags:
Quote:
A woman in Oklahoma died after she was mauled by dachshund mixes allegedly belonging to a neighbor.
On Thursday, 52-year-old Tracy Garcia was attacked by a pack of seven dogs — all weighing less than 40 pounds and shorter than knee-length — near her home on Banyon Road in Ardmore, Oklahoma, reports KXII News 12.
“From what it appeared, about seven dogs had attacked her,” Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant told Oklahoma News Four, adding that when authorities arrived on the scene, one of the dogs charged at them, and they ultimately had to shoot the canine.
“Unfortunately, yes, we had to shoot one dog,” Bryant told the outlet. “It did charge our deputies and to protect our deputies, as well as the medical personnel, we did have to put down a dog.”
The remaining six dogs were euthanized at their owner’s request, according to KXII News 12.
According to the euthanasia technician, Amanda Dinwiddie, all of the dogs were standard dachshund – also known as sausage or weiner dogs – mixes, with six of the canines being a mix of dachshund and terrier, while the other was believed to be a border collie mix.
“A predominant breed in these dogs is definitely standard dachshund,” Dinwiddie told KXII-12. “They have really noticeable characteristics like their knobby legs, knees, very short legged dogs and their coats.”
Dinwiddie added that the dogs — three of which were females and the other four males — “ranged from probably a year to about three years” old.
In addition, Dinwiddie said that the dogs did not have any visible health concerns, but noted that they were all infested with fleas and ticks.
“This is a bad situation, a very unfortunate situation,” Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant told KTEN News.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victims,” he added. “This is just a bad deal all the way around.”
According to KXII 12, Bryant says the incident, which is still under investigation, will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for review.

I agree...it's ridiculous! I am a dog lover and it has always ticked me off when owners of small dogs allow bad behavior. I have LITERALLY had a small
dog biting the hem of my pants (not actually my leg or I'd have kicked it, but not for lack of trying either!) WHILE the owners stood there in total denial
saying "oh he doesn't bite"!? Dachshunds can be great pets but not when allowed to go feral, and the breed is fairly prone to biting anyway. I feel so bad
for that woman who lost her life from such stupidity, & I hope they prosecute the dog's owner. Just tragic.

What did they do, gnaw her feet off?!? :confusd:

She probably fell during the attack? I'm not sure I want any more details...it's just too bad no one was able to come to her aid in time.

Re: Dachshund attack
Unfortunately for me, I have three of the aforementioned demon animals. As you can see by this picture, they strike fear into the heart of every person that sees them. As if that is not bad enough, the middle one is a rescue that came off the mean streets from the hood. She is a Dachshund Yorkshire Terrier mix, aka a "Dorkie". Squirrels and rabbits alike know better than to hang out in my backyard. If you don't believe me about how vicious they are, the Dorkie once killed a butterfly, midflight. Just ran and grabbed it like Godzilla eating Mothra. True story. Oh the horror!

Well, in all fairness they said Dachshund/Terrier mixes.
Without going into the whole pitbull and bull terrier mess, a mix between a terrier of that kind and a standard sized Dachshund can be quite a more formidable dog then what we picture as a Dachshund. Most wiener dogs we see are also the Mini breed. The Standards are a fair bit bigger.
It says they were less then 40 pounds, but what does that mean? Obviously up to 40 pounds? I've known some smaller sized bull terriers that could tear you up if they wanted to.
Even a standard sized Dachshund has a pretty big mouth and a good bite, but mixed with possibly a good sized terrier with a pretty good bite strength ...and all of them attacking as a pack, I can see them over powering a older lady.
I saw the police even had to shoot one dog, as it tried to attack them. So apparently they weren't just cute little Weiner dogs.
While the headline reads kind of ridiculous and funny, I think they use the whole Dachshund thing to make a "story" out of it. They were mixed dogs, probably on short legs, but still stout with a good bite on them.
Really to bad, the lady is dead and the dogs will die, too ..just because the owner had no control over them.
-
Both Dachshunds & terriers are dogs that tend to use their teeth, & these were obviously out of control & poorly socialized. If you estimate each weighed 35 lbs,
those 7 dogs together added up to 245 lbs, attacking an older lady of 52 years who was likely caught off-guard; I think I read somewhere it happened about 10 pm.
No matter how cute & comical you think typical Dachshunds are, these were mixes & behaved as a pack. They need to change the laws there, dogs should never
be allowed to roam like this...it doesn't end well for humans or dogs.

Re: Dachshund attack
Those of us that keep large, "dangerous" breeds (GSD, Rottweiler/Husky mix, Malamute right here) probably feel a little vindicated by reading this story, but it just goes to prove the sad fact that it's not the dog, it's the owner that makes the dog.

Re: Dachshund attack
As you can see...Dachshunds are savage little buggers....(This is Peppers, he's my sister's dog) 5 years old, full size dachshund, and about 18lbs. His legs are literally 5 inches long. He's also known as Sgt. Pudgy Paws. :D:D

there are pictures out there of the dead pack. they were of formidable enough size to do damage as a group; i'd have been terrified. this is incredibly sad and the owner should be charged with homicide.

Re: Dachshund attack
Speaking as a 52-year-old woman, I can see it happening. A while back I tripped most of the way out in the back of our 189’ deep lot in the dark. The ground was squishy enough that I didn’t get hurt, but I didn’t bounce right back up on my feet, either. Sat there for a few minutes whining at the naughty beagles (and getting a wet tuchis) until said brats came to see what I was doing sitting on the ground.
If there’s been a pack of nasty-tempered small dogs after me I’d have been in trouble. If I’d hurt myself falling, even one or two could have been a problem.
I can’t remember if I had my phone or not, but since then I try very hard to keep it with me at all times when home alone.

It's very sad and what a terrible way to go.
For those that are interested (because I was) here are some links:
Snopes fact check: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ok...ll-dachshunds/

I agree, terrible way to go.
Bites are painful. Those ripping, deep bites and mauling are excruciating.
Those dogs looked stout and perfectly able to deliver deep and ripping bites. Shorter legs and less weight means nothing, as soon as they had her on the ground it was game over for her. I played tug of war with a around 40 pound bull terrier once and the strength with which he ripped the rope from my arm was amazing. To think of of that power ripping on flesh and muscle..
Any dog breed, any dog even, sweet or not, can change once pack mentality takes over. Its the same with humans even. That's why I don't like when people have a large amount of dogs but take no time nor effort to control them. Free roaming packs of dogs should always be picked up by animal control asap.
I feel terrible for the lady and her family / friends. Not only did she die a horrible and painful death, but the media clearly took advantage of the breed/mix to twist this into a somewhat "hilarious" thing with their headlines and reporting.
I think its wrong to turn this tragedy into a laughingstock OR another breed or "large dog vs small dog" debate.
Its another case of some looser collecting to many dogs, neglecting and ignoring them, and due to that having a woman die a horrific way and 7 dead dogs, too.

If it weren't for the news story I would not have believed this.

Re: Dachshund attack
The simple fact is the news decided to spin this to create a sardonic headline. Tragic as it may be if it weren't for the way in which the media sold it, we wouldn't be talking about it. People are the victims of animal attacks everyday, all over the world. Sharks, bears, cougars, dogs, snakes, blue ringed octopus, funnel spiders, even deer have all killed people at one time or another. The list goes on and on. Do we post or worry about all of them? No.
I use levity to keep things from spiraling downward because there is enough "extreme" tragedy in this world without focusing on this. Is someone going to post a thread about the school shooting in Texas today? Probably not. And why, because it is starting to become so commonplace that society is becoming numb to it. I find it far more tragic and discussion worthy than a woman attached by a pack of dogs.
If you really want to talk about death and tragedy, here is a mind blower. In the next 100 years at least 6 to 7 billion people will die. That's not a guess or premonition, but a fact. There are currently around 7 billion people on the planet at this very moment and almost all will be gone 100 years from now, and for a myriad of tragic and non-tragic reasons. So let's not get on the soap box and finger point or condescend, or get all bent out of shape about who is being flippant or lacking compassion. I'll leave you to talk amongst yourselves. I'm feeling a bit verklempt.

Re: Dachshund attack
I look at it this way myself..... if, when I'm older I pass away via a pack of Dachshunds I would expect people to laugh at how I kicked the bucket as I would certainly be laughing myself. Life is too short to take everything so seriously (and I've dealt with quite a bit of death in my time so far), frankly this site is dry enough where you need a little humor sometimes to keep things interesting. I'm not being insensitive, but hey, it's not everyday someone goes out like this.

I agree, there is always something "worse" or more worthy of attention and/or empathy.
I see a abused dog, others say hey, there are abused children, that is worse. I see a rapist, others say, hey, that murderer over there, he is worse.
I see a beautiful snake, others say, hey, that puppy over there is far prettier.
And yes, we have become numb. We are bombarded daily by some kind of tragedy, abuse, neglect, natural disaster, terrorism and the list forever goes on...
Every now and then something "sticks" for whichever reason. In this case, it has to do with animals. We are a animal oriented forum, so therefor that is a topic which may end up in here more so then others.
On top of that, the very way in which this was presented (by the press, not the Original Poster) spins this into our conscience. I don't like the way it was done. I realize the news have to spin their stories in ways to create interest, esp. since people have become numb to all but the most terrible or obscure, weird or funny.
Personally, I don't point my finger at the original poster or anyone that found that story ironically funny in a way. I point my finger at the media for turning this tragedy, as small as it is in the big picture of the worlds tragedies, into slapstick comedy of a sort.
Of course it strikes one as a bit hilarious to picture a pack of Wieners on a murdering rampage. The way this was presented will result in a never-ending flood of meme's, jokes and also discussion of small vs large vs breed of dogs. I don't like that part of it.
Do I think the school shooting is worse? Yes. But then, I'm not a family member of the woman who got killed, and I am not judge and jury to decide which of the worlds terrible things carry more weight then the other.
The more one thinks about it all, the more depressing it gets. Someone told me once, the world is going to crap, more crime then ever, more atrocities. But then again, I believe this has always gone on. Perhaps not as sophisticated or on the scale that our technology enables. But tragedies and disasters have been a thing since the dawn of time. The difference is, back when there was no world news, TV's, internet or even newspapers you rarely heard much of anything but what happened in the immediate surroundings. Nowadays you hear of everything from everywhere and it can become overwhelming.
I really like your thought provoking posts. You always have a lot to offer..

Would never have thought that would ever happen!!

Re: Dachshund attack
I'm more worried about a Pomeranian or Chihuahua than any other breed (sans Dachshund) ... I have a scar on my lip to prove my point; from a little Dachshund that thought it would be cool to bite me after giving me licks.
