Moving during a shed
We are moving from SC to VA in a week and, as I had feared, Lucy went into blue last night. Is there anything I can do to keep her humidity up during transport? Would sphagnum work? Are we just doomed to a bad shed?
We can't move any earlier because our rental won't be ready and we can't move any later because my husband will be shipping out soon after we arrive.
(She popped her head out to yawn and see how the packing was going.) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a291477ee2.jpg

I don’t think it will not take effort, but I love sphagnum moss. Yes if you set it up right it’ll be fine. Small tub, lots of moss, wet not damp. Good luck.

Re: Moving during a shed
Usually for transport I have her in a pillowcase in the tub as I've heard it minimizes stress and a towel underneath for some padding. Should I skip the pillowcase this time?
I just hate that we have to have her in that little tub for 7+ hours. [emoji21]

No need for that, putting the moss in the pillow case would be an ideal way to achieve what you’re looking for.

The moss won't get too cold?

It shouldn’t get colder then you’re allowing the snake to get during normal transport? Correct? You should be fine, like I said ideally it should be great. Long as you watch the temps, you could always use a heat pack like the breeders ship with. Hope this helps.

@OP this is a good idea but be careful with this: don't allow the snake to come in direct contact with a heat pack as they get very hot and, like any unregulated hearing element, can be dangerous.

Great advice Taylor, I assume sometimes they already know. Great job. An Op, good luck!

Thanks! It's the South so we're already in the mid-80s.

it's always best to err on the side of caution. [emoji6]

Snakes actually travel very well...don't worry about 7+ hours on the road. But I do recommend that you use a secure snake bag (or pillow case) inside of
an "ice chest" or styrofoam box, to keep her temperature stable. Remember that sun coming thru the windows can bump up the temps too high while you're
busy & distracted, and depending upon your vehicle, be aware that sometimes the under-insulated floor can heat up excessively & harm a snake too, especially
if it's not in an insulated chest. Sphagnum moss is a winner! By all means include it. Good luck with the move. I've traveled for 3 days in a car full of snakes,
a half-grown dog, and a small rodent colony of rats, mice & hamsters. "Piece of cake"! :)

Dang, good job! Haha.
I keep her on the passenger seat when I drive, and I was going to bring her thermometer into the car with us.

When snakes are shipped overnight, they're in a pillowcase in a box for at least 14 hours, so it's all good! Just treat it as a shipped snake.
And yes, he should still be in a pillowcase in a secure box/tub for 7+ hours, minimizes stress and they won't get jostled about.

Looks like most of your bases are covered. Soooo....good luck with the move!! :gj:

Re: Moving during a shed
Apparently little miss just wanted to stress mama out, haha. She went ahead and shed just hours before the move. I even got to watch a little!
And it was a good thing too. We didn't end up being able to move in yesterday, so she spent a day living in a tub. [emoji26]

As I tried to say before, snakes travel very well with just minimal care- making sure they are insulated (from excess heat OR cold) & have some sort of
bedding that absorbs the bumps & jostling of the road.
When I moved cross half the country with my car full, I took the snake's out of their travel bags (inside "ice chests") one at a time & gave them a drink
of water each night. None of them seemed the least bit concerned...and none had any health issues afterward.
When I lost power from the 2009 ice storm for FOUR DAYS, my snakes were bagged & placed in ice chests that were kept warm with jars of hot water. I
only had to change the hot water about every 9 hours...my snakes were a lot warmer than I was! I have a gas hot water heater, but the house was too
cold to enjoy a hot shower. Anyway, none of my snakes got sick or had any issues from that episode either. It was work for me but it gave me something
to do...not much to do with the power off anyway.
