Necro Threads?
I'm just curious, there's a lot of push back on this site when someone bumps up an older thread. Why is necro'ing such a bad thing?
-
I have no problem with them. Sometimes there is good information in them that has not been discussed in a long while of since that thread started.
Also so there is a good chance that someone has a question about the topic as well.
When someone answers the OP’s question even though they haven’t posted in 2-3 years, the answer can still benefit others.
For these reasons I have read through plenty of necro threads.
On the other hand, I’m and glad that when the same questions are asked over and over ad nauseum folks will answer them rather than dismiss them by telling the OP’s to do a “search” like on many other forums.

lol i love to bamp old threads. i'm the bamp champ!
:trophy: :w00t:
and then if Mason catches u, he's all like :colbert:. i think he's only approved of one of my necro bamps.
i actually use the search button and will add my :2cent: if i like the thread or if i find it relevant even if the topic may be old. i find random bamps of old threads by random peeps quite funny when someone is speaking directly to the OP who may not have posted or logged on in a long while. it's like thank you for your reply, but i'm sure the OP probably made a decision or figured it out already or don't care anymore. some find these kinda bamps annoying. maybe it clutters up the front page and pushes fresher threads down or whatever. if a Mod or Admin deems it irrelevant or the discussion dead, they will probably lock the thread.
ok that said, i'm off play w/ the search button!
:floating:
Edit: i might just go bamp some threads over at Fauna too! ;)

i don't get the push-back either. it seems very counter-productive to the mission of this site, as there's TONS of info on here from decades ago that's still relevant and important. if someone has a question about that thread, why chastise them over the fact that it's old? who honestly cares? i don't...

^^^ however this is the exception for me LOL.

Personally i've never had a problem with it. Like the others already said, with such an old forum such as this one, all the info that has been passed down over all those years is still relevant (for the most part). I got maybe 70% from old necros on here originally before making this account, and I don't regret it in the slightest. I won't always bump them myself if i've seen it dead for well over a year, but I dont see a problem with browsing or answering one if it brings important info to our users!

That's because we do occasionally change the answers. One particular old tip used to be withholding water then offering a sopping wet F/T to "entice" the bp to eat. I didn't like it at the time and hate it now. Also the practice of "chaining" feeders by shoving it in the snakes mouth as it is about to finish the prey item it was feeding on. :(
Necro's run the risk of putting outdated info on the front page and, to be honest, I'm in favour of auto-locking threads after 24 months or so just to avoid it.

Necroing drives me nuts. It brings up old dead threads and it is like running into an old ex boyfriend after not having anything to do with him for 10 years.
Please don't necro it is annoying. I would love to have old threads locked to stop this.

Necro Threads?
I’m totally fine with bumping old threads. Take a chill pill people, I mean some topics never die... hoohoohaaahaaa!!!!! Necromancy!
-
Some people are trying to help an OP that hasnt been here for years.....
While others are trying to ask questions on an old thread instead of creating their own post and then get mad that people dont answer them.

Re: Necro Threads?
I have no problem with necro threads, especially for topics that could still remain relevant today. There have been times when I've stumbled across a more general discussion that is anywhere from a few months to a year or two old, and wanted to contribute. However, not being sure what was considered taboo in such instances, I've abstained.

I agree. Even though it can be a little annoying at times when questions asked the day before are asked again by someone new the next day, it can be hard to find *exactly* what you're looking for in the search. I usually end up going Advanced and only search through titles, because a general search pulls up several pages of threads where the search term has been mentioned once in the whole thread, and often in a very vague manner or in passing.
Then again, I could just be not all that bright.

It all depends on the thread TBH. If it's something that has a newer current thread and you bump an old thread then it's frowned upon. If it's an old thread showing off an animal or something I don't see them having an issue with it.
-
I'm perfectly cool with bumps of old threads, as long as the OP is still active and the thread is still relevant.
It's the ones that are months+ old and the OP hasn't been active since and then a user chimes in...
or it's a time sensitive issue that's months+ old and a user chimes in...
...but even then, it's nothing more than a minor inconvenience. I'm sure we've all got bigger problems in our lives than a bump of an old thread.
Don't sweat the small stuff, people.

Noun. thread necromancy (uncountable) (Internet, slang) On an Internet forum, the act of posting in a thread that is already considered dead or/and out of discussion.
It really depends on the thread. If someone asked a question, and it was answered YEARS ago. There is no need to add another answer. I see this A LOT. Sometimes I will see a title with like 15 pages at the top of list and I start reading and it gets heated and I get heated and then I wanna reply and then I realize it is from YEARS ago and someone just replied to it as if it were posted yesterday. That's what really grinds my gears.
Threads that are meant to updated time to time are fine. Threads that died without a conclusion and someone asks "Hey whatever happened to this?" are OK.
The short of it is, look at the date of the last post in a thread before you post yourself. Make sure it is appropriate.
Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood thread necro police. :).

There's a UK reptile forum where it seems every other question posted gets shot down and they're referred to the search function. Why bother having a forum if people aren't allowed to talk on it? Lol.

It's something I can't get my tiny mind around as well !!
I really enjoy it when someone bumps a real old thread as they're usually full of great bits of advice !!
It's Iike comparing a new album with a 'greatest hits' one !!
There's room for both , in my humble opinion ..

You can ask away however by bumping old threads, asking your own question in them you will likely be passed over as most people do not care about reading through them.
New thread means more view means more answers, as for being shut down I have no idea what that forum you are describing is but I can understand some of it too depending on the question, some people would rather not search and be spoon fed which can be annoying, it's all about balance show that you make an effort and people will help, come to be spoon fed and that will likely not work.

Sometimes it's good info - sometimes it is well out of date. What if they bumped a thread where everyone was denying female deserts have any issues?
