What's your fav grunge band?
ok yesterday April 4th was Seattle Rock Day and 24 years ago today April 5th, Kurt Cobain left this mortal coil. also his daughter Frances Bean Cobain just posted some music: https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news...D=ansmsnnews11 we have lost many more artists and bands since.
were u into grunge music? did u see any of these bands live? i've seen Chris Cornell solo once and 3 times w/ Audioslave (not grunge) and Pearl Jam once. i was too young and never saw them during the grunge hey day of the 90's tho. i still remember the sadness of the city when we lost Kurt tho and my mom still remembers him and his striped sweater from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Lol. one of my friends still worship Kurt and his music.
i'm leaving out a few and only including 1 non-Seattle Band (Stone Temple Pilots). wasn't sure about including The Gits (more punk; RIP Mia) and Mother Love Bone (too glam). i'm including soem super groups tho (Mad Season and Temple of the Dog).
anyway which was your fav or fav's?
Edit: sorry, not including Jimi Hendrix for obvious reasons but wanted to acknowledge him anyway!
-
I love all those bands but being a teen in the 90s, Nirvana was my fav.
From the list above, I saw in concert: Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains
The Nirvana show was a New Years Show, opened by (this might be cencored?) Butthole Surfers and MC'd by Bobcat Goldthwait who wore a diaper like a new years baby, it was amazing. Oakland Coliseum in 1993 just 4 months before Kurt died.
I'm really glad I got to see them before he was gone.
I went to see Janes Addiction but got sick in line and had to leave which was a bummer, another of my favorites.
-
I was coming of age in the 90s, so these bands wrote the soundtrack of my youth. It's funny because if I were to pick a favorite today, it would probably be different than my favorite at the time. But only barely.
Gotta say Pearl Jam. And my family is all aware I would shove each and every one of them in front of a bus if Eddie Vedder told me he wanted me. They understand.
(heart bleeds nearly equally for Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Screaming Trees...)
ETA: I remember standing in a Sun Coast record store when Kurt's death was announced on the news. Employees were crying, I was in shock. It was 2 weeks before my 16th birthday.

totally! :D
So many wonderful PJ songs, one of my favorites (hard to choose) is Yellow Ledbetter, what about you?

How dare you not put mudhoney on there even though you do have the melvins so I guess you're cool :D

ahh yeah, beautiful song, hard to listen to for me (won't go into it) but that is a beautiful haunting song.
AX01 - being in Seattle and asking about this, you've probably seen Singles?
silly goofy movie from the early 90s, so grungy, great cameos:

i've seen Jane's Addiction twice. i would consider them more psych or funk tho. i bumped into Perry Farrell's wife once at Lalapalooza (she was a Lala girl, one of the backup dancers).

#ProtectEddieVedder was a hashtag last year when we lost Chris Cornell. Cool Fact: my sister had one of Pearl Jam's lead guitarist Mike McCready's kids in her class; she taught in a wealthy private school. she got me a holiday card from him one year!

This is too hard!!! I was a grunge fan through and through, still listen to a lot, and have been on a kick since Chris Cornell passed.
For the sake of choosing one I would have to go with Alice in Chains. I went out and bought their album the day I heard "Man in the Box" on the radio for the first time.
I loved everything they put out and Layne Staley is right up there for favorite rock star ever. However, Chris Cornell might be my favorite pure vocalist ever (Roy Orbison is right up there, random In this conversation, huh?) I have Layne's lyric "If I can't be my own I'd feel better dead" from Nutshell tattooed on my ribcage and a tattoo I designed inspired by the AIC Sun logo on my leg.
The Mother Love Bone album is one of the most underrated albums of all time in my opinion. If Andy Wood hadn't died they may have changed rock music before Nirvana, PJ, AIC and Soundgarden broke out. Heck, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden may not even exist had he not died. The Temple of the Dog album was a great tribute album and the first time most of the world heard Chris Cornell or Eddie Vedder's voices.
It's sad to think about, but I'm pretty sure PJ is the only band listed who has no members that have died. I'm not sure on Screaming Trees though (Dollar Bill is an all time favorite track).

I'm usually dubious of most charities, but I think I donated money to that. But seriously, 90s front men (and women, sweet Dolores...) drop like flies.

Oh bummer!!! They put on a great show. I love Perry Farrell. And "Jane Says" is a song that I just can't explain how much I love, always have. It took on a different meaning once I "understood" it which just made it near and dear. The "Kettle Whistle" album is still a favorite

I tried to see Janes again in 2011 in Oakland, "Not So Silent Night" but drummer Stephen had a family emergency and they cancelled last minute. Rolled up to the parking lot to signs saying Green Day was the replacement band. Already seen them 3 times over the years and not liking their overly pop punk newer stuff so that was a huge bummer. *sigh* After 2 times of trying to see JA and it not happening, I figure either 3rd times the charm (if they ever tour again) or I'm SOL.
Another great band IMO, although again, not quite 'grunge' was Primus, also puts on a fun show!

Yup!!!! Les Claypool is just plain stupid on the bass. He makes that slap style look easy. Incredible that he can sing while playing like that too

have u been to Rudy's Can't Fail, the diner next to The Fox Theater in downtown Oakland? it's co-owned by Mike Dirnt of Green Day and named after The Clash song. my office was up the street on Thomas L. Berkeley Way (20th Ave) and we used to go there sometimes.

No, I haven't been there but I've been to the Fox a few times. I met Mike and Billie at the first BFD in '94, my bf at that time was an acquaintance of theirs from before they hit it big. Wish we had phones that would take pictures back then!
I usually avoid Oakland if I can (heheh) Was the diner any good?

that's so cool u met them in '94. i think Tre Cool is the coolest of the trio tho. the diner is good but nothing special. they have a blackened catfish that i liked - u can have it in a sammich, salad or w/ fries. haha yeah Oakland is truely The Wild West. i do really, really miss The Bay!
Edit: ok for the grunge fans: did u also wear flannel and Doc Martens, etc?

Re: What's your fav grunge band?
My youngest daughter's name is Allison Layne so I'll let you guess who is my favorite.
That said Chris Cornell had the best rock voice, next to Robert Plant, of all time. "Ten" is one of those albums that I can play the whole thing without skipping a song. And I love the "Unplugged" version of Man who Sold the World.
Besides the Grunge factor of the movie, Bridgette and Kyra were quite the lookers then too.

love that one too! but isn't Kurt plugged in on that one? the opening guitar riff that's played throughout. it's electrified right? or he at least has some pedals and/or effects going on. (someone who actually plays may be abel to explain more)

Duh. I had 3 pairs in all until I decided Docs were sellout and lame, then I moved on to Gripfast.
-
You know I can't choose, being born and raised in Seattle lol.
-
What's your fav grunge band?
Soundgarden, nirvana, pearljam.
Cant decide, they All have good songs that have that emotive angst and angry distorted grunge guitars.

Alice In Chains and Soundgarden all the way. But I have to give Nirvana props too.

What's your fav grunge band?
The Melvins. Period. Without them there would have been no grunge movement

I chose Soundgarden. I prefer harder sounds and SG takes the cake in this group. And Chris Cornell is the best vocalist out of the bunch. Never did I have to listen to one of his songs several times or read the lyrics to know what he was singing. Unlike pretty much every other singer for these bands. Truly a man taken too soon.

I can definitely hear influences of Nirvana , Soundgarden and Pearl Jam in some of Highly Suspect .,

Re: What's your fav grunge band?
I sure most know about black hole sun the song but how about the weird 90's video. I like the video btw. I like how in some of the scenes it portrays how sadistic people can be like burning the ants or the girl burning the Barbie doll.
https://youtu.be/3mbBbFH9fAg
I'm not sure what my favorite grunge band is but since I posted the video I voted for soundgarden.
-
Nirvana, always felt they were a groundbreaking band. I consider them on of the best ever, grunge or not. All these years later I listen to pearl jam more often than nirvana, but I think that's just a case of a larger selection of songs to chose from.

I saw Janes Addiction just before they made it big. I'd never even heard of them, but they were opening for Iggy Pop at a smallish club on Fort Lauderdale beach. Both bands went off that night. Still one of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

i met them. [emoji4] i won tickets to Lolla last year as well as passes to the Unofficial Lolla After party. i was standing next to Chance the Rapper texting away (well, we both were) before i realized. did a quick Google search of his height as he's 2ft. away from me so i could confirm my suspicion that it was him LOL.
anyway, my buddy LOVES Highly Suspect. we're hanging out at this rooftop bar, and we see some guys walk in, tattooed and looking grungy, and then the guy with tattoos on his face just stands out to us. "HIGHLY SUSPECT!" my buddy screams at him! dude looks confused, looks behind him then points at himself like "...oh, me?". he walks over to us and we geek out; we talk and the rest of the band comes over. Lead Singer seemed a bit uncomfortable, and he asks us to show him where the bar is, and my buddy ryan interrupts me explaining the path to the bar with "ILL TAKE YOU." so i go back to texting next to Chance lol.
there's more to this story but it's not appropriate to tell on a family forum lol. needless to say those guys are just a bunch of kids with an awesome band and a lot of money having the time of their lives. i love them.
