Live at the lake right now..

the easiest way to tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile is whether you see them later or in a while.

LOL, that would be awesome !!
I'm thrilled I got to see that old gator again. He is on a VERY "off the beaten path" part of a military installation. So he doesn't get bothered. Fishing is allowed there, but most people go to the larger lakes we have.
This lake is actually VERY small. You would think to small to support a gator, but he is doing well. Been there for many years. He doesn't bother anyone and no-one bothers him. I make sure not to get to close...he wouldn't come after me, but he would go into the water. And he was enjoying that sunbath so very much with those cold nights lately.
Just sat down quietly and observed him enjoying the sun :)

OMG, haha.
I wonder if that hasn't actually been tried before !!! There were a couple of times we found evidence of a late night party at that lake!! Don't think I would try that, though, :O That gator is a lot bigger close up then it appears on those pictures. Don't think it would look at a human as food, but something splashing around at night, who knows, he might nip at ya...:D
The BIG lake we have, I would not be doing that there, though. When I was kayaking there, I saw baby alligators. And god knows what lurks in there. I remember many years ago they drained that huge lake, left it empty for a few years and it filled in with trees, vines and whatnot. Then they filled it again. I dont even like kayaking there very much. All those underwater trees to get snagged on!
just looked it up, that lake is 7.7 acres big

Check out just how remote that lake is. Its the tiny dot in the middle, Lake "Eck". Those roads around it are dirt roads and most of those are closed off to public, they are access roads to training areas (military). Hardly ever a soul out there.
There are acres upon acres of DENSE forest all around. And that is just a small part of it in the picture. Its quite spooky to go there alone in the evening. Esp. since the area is supposed to be haunted back from the Civil War. Most people go to the big lake for recreation or fishing.
I like to go there because it is so quiet and peaceful. Hanging out with the gator is a big plus. We were just sitting there, enjoying the sunshine (Mr. Gator and I) :)

I was SO thrilled. I've only got to see him one other time. Well, one third time, but he was submerged then and barely visible..
It was worth the long drive through spooky woods to get there, so peaceful, so beautiful, and I got to spend that time with this magnificent creature, both of us enjoying the sun and peace...it was magical :)

LOL! :) :P I finally got it! I read this an hour ago, and then again just now! Finally clicked. Pretty funny tttaylorrr!
I am so beat. Been working AND moving everything out of my old house for the past week and a half. Closing is Friday! I can't wait! I am really tired and punchy!
Then Katie and I have a living room and garage full of boxes to go through! YAY!
Anyway, cool Alligator! Please don't get to close! They can run very fast in a straight line!

I can run pretty fast, too :P
Plus he was down a slight hill. So I had the advantage. I didn't get super close. I wasn't even that worried about myself, but I didn't want him to have to give up his sunbath and get into the water because of me disturbing him. We've had some pretty cold nights and I knew how much he must have enjoyed the sun on him!
Buying/selling/moving homes is lots of work and stress for sure, but in the end, it will all be worth it!! Hang in there..

Really?
It was the most peaceful and awesome time I've had in a while. It was perfect!
I think that old gator is beautiful...

Re: Live at the lake right now..
For whatever reason, alligators/crocodiles still scare me. From a distance, or little ones, is fine for me though. We did have a young alligator for a while at the wildlife rehab center before he went down to a refuge. He was pretty funny. Grumpy little guy, made lots of funny noises. Crocodilian parental care is super cool though. Awesome animals in general, maybe some day I'll desensitize myself to being up closer to them.

I'm not sure why, but this particular gator doesn't scare me at all. He has been in that small lake for a very long time. There are no others. (Big lakes must have a few though, I've seen babies ;))
Some people make that trip out there to fish, even though the lake is small. I think they like the peace and quiet. I feel like the gator and the people have come to an understanding. Each leaves the other alone. That's why I leave a respectful distance as well.
There was just something so peaceful about that place. Its so quiet, not a soul around aside from the animals. It was beautiful and that old "dinosaur" and I just enjoyed the sun. It was a great way to just stop thinking about anything at all and live in the moment.
