LMAO So true. I have been so much reading and studying and preparing and building. She's 7 feet long and 5 lb. He said he had her on a maintenance diet to keep her small. She's going in a custom-made 6-foot by 4-foot by 4-foot enclosure. I built it. A reticulated python that size I'm sure should be eating jumbo rats right?

Doesn't look very thick because of the maintenance feeding so id just go with a Large Rat. Dont over feed as the digestion track needs to get going after a maintenance feed for so long. Great looking, what did they say about the temperament?

I am sure my questions will fly away but I am so looking for growing with her. The only thing that scares me is that she is not a Dwarf or SD. She will get big with proper feeding. I hope she is a good girl like the breeder said she was.

I figured she was a bit thin. My retic was eating jumbos at that size, but larges for a few meals until she thickens up is probably a good idea. I'd feed her every 2 weeks, so as not to shock her system, though every 2 weeks is (imo) a good regular schedule to keep at that size.

If she's a mainland, expect her to likely hit a major growth spurt once she starts eating normally with you...she's only 2 years old, so she may not actually grow too awfully much too quick, either. Either way, don't expect that 6' enclosure to last long!

I just want her happy and healthy. I don't mind big. She will have climbing platforms and logs to enjoy as well.

I cant even think how difficult it is to wait weeks or months for a new pet to arrive. She will not be here till Wednesday. Paid for her last Wednesday. 2 more days of waiting. I have her enclosure ready and up to temp just waiting on her. She will be in quarantine for a few weeks and in a slightly smaller enclosure till then. So excited.

I just finished waiting over 3 months for a pair of Retics to be shipped last month, because the weather has been so horrible this winter... lol They were definitely worth the wait! :) How old is this girl at 7'/5 pounds?

Was told she was hatched March of 2016. If so, right at 2 years old. Seams small for a female reticulated python that age. Neither of her parents were dwarf or SD. Here mom was 18 feet long when she was laid.

I am sure once properly fed she will have a growth sprit then and pack on some weight. I just want to get and keep her healthy and happy. Thursday I will access her health and if needed will take her by my vet.

you have no business buying a snake if you don't even know what size food it needs. you read and studied and are still ignorant of this information? irresponsible people should not be allowed to buy reptiles.

Hmmmmmm.... So let me welcome you to the forum. I am aware of her current feeding habits, have a chart that is a general guide based on weight, I have read and posted questions to do my homework, I have a friend that is a breeder guiding me........

Still don't see how I am such a failure here? Sure she will be my first reticulated python. I have experience with BPs, RTB, corns, kings, and tree boa. I am here to learn but far from an idiot.

Please go pout in the corner while I learn as much as I can before I get my new baby.

In any case, I hope your new addition arrives safely! Have you found a local source for rabbits yet? I'm sure she will eventually need to go on them. I know some people sell f/t rabbits online (and pigs) but prices are crazy.

I have 2 pet stores that sell FT rabbits and 1 that sells pigs and the first one sales quail and chicken also.

Any suggestions on unboxing her? The least stressful way? Should I handle her a min or just sit the box in her enclosure and let her come out on her own? I have received BPs and Corns in the mail before but this is a Retic. I want to have a good relationship with her.

I'd put the box in her new home and slightly open the lid so she can slither out and investigate when she's ready ...

I just open the box calmly and then usually snip the draw string on the bag since the breeders i get my snakes from freakin tie it, zip tie it and then tape it lol. So it's like trying to untie the gordian knot. Once i get it open, i just peek inside without getting my face close to get tagged and cradle the bottom of bag or set it on the floor. Usually i get one of 2 responses, the snake is like "OMG I'M FREE" and climbs out or "I was relaxing in here and WHO are you". First response makes it easy, second response means either gently turn the bag over so the snake slides or slide your hand in the bag and see what happens. I have yet to get bit by sliding my hand inside the bag. Louie did take 2 shots at me when i pulled him out though lol. But he was really stressed. I think FedEx played soccer with his box :(

No idea who Illaoi is but my little buddy Dutti is gone. He was our resident snake expert!!

I agree. If she comes in a bag, I'd untie it and leave the bag in her enclosure or gently tip her out of it in the enclosure. I've unbagged and handled all of mine to look for any issues, but none of mine wanted to nail me in the face lol. I think leaving the bag in the enclosure and allowing her to come out on her own would probably be least stressful.

I do want to inspect her but I think I will use this method. I just know she will be stressed. I don't want our first interaction to be a stressful one. Her enclosure is up to temp and all set up for her. She is at the local hub but I am at work the next 8 hours. I want to have peaceful positive energy when I handle her the first time. Will keep everyone posted and will put photos up asap.

I know! Right? I can't though. I'm the only person that does what I do here at the hospital I work at. And when they need me they need me. I just feel bad for her being stuck in that cold box.

It is an hour drive to the FedEx hub to pick her up. Then 1.5 hour drive home after I get her. Will try to get a weight and length measurements after she is settled. The box with her in it was 7lbs.

Geeeeeez. 16’ at one year old? 5’-6’ is considered average for a yearling mainland retic (from what I’ve been told), and the biggest I’ve heard of is 9’-10’ when power fed. 14’ of growth in one year (assuming 2’ hatch length) seems impossible. Maybe by 2 if you really power feed, but 16’ seems more like a 3-4+ year old’s size.

Anyways good luck! Glad to hear the wait is almost over. :) Be ready for one monster of a feeder once she gets some food in her, unless she’s a rare sweetie like my River, she is going to want some food after all that maintenance feeding. :O

Even if it is true, I doubt it being healthy for the snake.

I am ready with frozen large and jumbos in freezer already. I plan on offering her food Sunday and see if :P she eats then after settling in a couple of days. She eat last Thursday and is use to 14 day feeding schedule. Going to slowly bump her up to weekly feedings and keep her on large for a month or two before switching to XL. I am sure she will let me know when hungry and she will be fed in a healthy way. Why have a large breed if you don't want it to get large? I give up. I am sure she will pack on some weight quickly if fed properly. 7' and 7lbs right now. Long and skinny girl. She has never had room to stretch out either living in a tub until now. After her quarantine time she will have Ledges and branches to climb on and a water dish she can swim in from time to time. I am so excited for her.

I have purchased from him before and she should be packed very well. I live on Galveston Island in Texas. Have to drive to Houston to get her. Just want her safe, happy, and healthy. Do sub-adults handle shipping well? He said she had a nice disposition. Hope shipping doesn't scare that out of her. LOL:oops::D
