AP T8 heating
OK, got a question i'm fighting to figure out. I'm getting a baby retic shortly from prehistoric pets and have a AP T65 on order. Yes I know that is WAY too big right now and my thinking was I don't want to have to buy another down the road. I just wanted to buy one cage that would last a lifetime for that animal. Well I've come to the conclusion that I probably need a smaller cage for now (probably 1st year). I'm looking at the AP T8 to house the retic for now. My question is will the 11" flexwatt they provide be adequate heating, my house gets down to 68 degrees, or should I spend the extra and get an RHP. I've already bought 4 RHP's from Bob at Pro Products for the 2 T65's I've ordered and am trying to be as cheap as possible on this T8. Any suggestions?

Re: AP T8 heating
Either heat the room warmer or yeah, you'll need an RHP for your T8. They hold heat well but the flexwatt won't do anything to raise the ambient temp

If your running Herpstats you can use one of the Panels you bought from Bob. If its a large one like my 150 watt i just run it on lower power % and its perfect.
On another note.. If you have several hides and other things that snake would me fine... Some people may disagree, but clutter the enclosure and provide 3- 4 hides and some fake plants & he will be livin large IMO. [emoji1362]
Always can use the divider for now too.

I always find it strange when some people say a cage is "too big". How can an enclosure ever be bigger than nature lol

It's to big for the owner in most cases. It's alot harder to keep proper temps and humidity in a large enclosure

You here this mostly with the other species that stress easily without security..but with wood, leaves and several hides in a 8 foot enclosure they would be living the life!!! Burms & Retics are confident animals and love to explore.

First off, you wont need a smaller cage. Just give that cage a bunch of climbing stuff, some plastic/silk plants, a few hides, some PVC tubes to play with and that snake will be happy.
As for heating, if your house gets down to 68F, you will for sure need a RHP. Flexwatt is not going to compensate for that much of a difference. I keep my room around 77-79F and just use flexwatt.
Bottom line, skip the T8 and just use the T65 and spend all that cash you would have spent on the T8 to buy stuff to deck out that T65 and enjoy until the retic gets bigger and bulldozes everything and you end up not being able to give him/her cool stuff cause he/she gets stuck in it, breaks it, poops on it or buries it.
A cage can never be too big. A cage can be too sparse though.

I concur. a small space can be created in a large space. I have said this many time and practiced it with a tiny hatchling even! Provide multiple small hides and black out all but one side... boom, SUPERIOR to a tiny enclosure, as you have the security without the confinement.
-
Also bigger cages tend to be easier to get a good temp gradient. The smaller the cage, the less space you got to work with.

A lot of them say the animal will get stressed out and stop eating. Seems like BS to justify keeping them in drawers imo.

I definitely see this with my Burm. If I'm working in her enclosure she just sits there and looks at me like "meh" lol. It's as if she's too lazy to do anything unless food is involved.

There are poorly bred snakes out there & species that are nervous, stressed and hardly want to eat and thats where the smaller environment push comes from. Not only that but their are people that act like they are a toy and cant control themselves at all as far as letting them settle when they get them home. Impulse buyers especially who want a shiny new toy for a minute. Especially with the Ball Pythons.. Retics and Burm are another Game all together and more fun IMO.

This is what I think too. A lot of ball python morphs look cool but those smaller snakes just don't feel the same. I'd have a Titanoboa if I could have one. They need to hurry up and build Jurassic Park lol

Re: AP T8 heating
I'm still reluctant in putting my almost four foot female in the four foot cage I'm just afraid that she's going to go off feeding or her personality will change cuz right now she eats every time and she's easy to get out of the tub no issues...
Hide boxes for her size are about 20 bucks any recommendation on an alternate and hide box maybe like a tub with a hole cut in it

My 4' female has been in a 4' enclosure since she was 18" long and 150 grams. I kept her in quarantine for a few months at first in a 20 long. Males seem to be more of a worry wort to me. Ive never had a problem with a Female.
I know if you get a 4' enclosure youll be happy, and so will she. At night it allows then to do snake business.. Up all night, Hide all day. I just ordered some more hides on Wed. My 1600 gram 4' girl is in a Large RBI hide. I dont know if you meant $20 each but heres 2 shipped or $21 from RBI

I have 2 XL and I dont use them... The jumbo is even bigger. Not even a 4000 gram Ball Python needs them, their way to big. They hold all my cleaning supplies instead. The only thing i might do in the future is make the Large Doors bigger because 2 XL hides take up 1/2 of my 4'x2' AP enclosure let alone a Jumbo. Once the water bowl is in the middle theres no room.
What snake is this for?

Cant see a 4' retic needing close to a Jumbo size at all. Theyre much thinner than Burms. Id go with a Large at the most. My 4' 1600 gram female has lots of room still in a Large. You can always sell them when your done...

Re: AP T8 heating
Sorry I hijack the thread and I don't really mean to harp on it... I'm wondering if I should just put her in the 6-foot cage instead of moving her 3 times in a matter of three or four months she should stay in the 6-foot cage for quite some time
