Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
Years ago, when I was in the Marine Corps, I owned a couple red tail boas. They were normals. This is my first ball python. I’ve looked through WOBP and so many look similar to me it’s just becoming more confusing. It seems the older I get, the more my brain turns into an Etch-a-Sketch.
I know you will all probably cringe at this but I got her at Petco. I had been thinking about getting a snake for a while and saw her when i was getting some new bulbs for my Russian Tortoise. It was love at first sight and I couldn’t leave her in that place. She was listed as a Spinner, but she is really yellow and any Spinners or Spiders I’ve looked at, the headstamp looks different to me. I definitely see Pin in her, but I think there may be something else... The closest I’ve seen to what she looks like is a Spinner Mojave (screenshot of that snake from DR, posted below the actual photos of mine), but I will rely on the expert opinions here. She also has blue eyes (dark blue with hints of gray in some lighting). Her hatch date is 26June2017 and she has a very curious and outgoing personality.
My interest is not for breeding purposes. I’m just interested in giving her a loving home, but I’d like to know for my own personal knowledge. If you need any additional photos, please let me know. Thank you all in advance!

Re: Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
I'm terrible at spotting morphs. I just had to comment on this thread to say thank you for your services! I was raised by a Marine and I have nothing but respect for you

A spinner. Congratulations on your new pet.

Also not a morph expert. Pretty snake though.
Let us us know if there is anything else you need help with and/or have questions on.
I have a BCI as well. BP’s are cool snakes too. Requirements are similar in terms of temps and humidity.
If if you can care for BCI’s, you will do fine with a BP.
Thank you for your service!

Thank you very much! Eventually I’d love to get a Blue Eyed Lucy and a Banana Enchi (and I’m sure that list will grow), but for now I’m just enjoying her. She is a sweetheart. The only thing I was nervous about was feeding frozen thawed. 18yrs ago when I had my red tails, I fed them live. But she took her first feeding like a champ.

I'm old school and have never tried the f/t route but I want to do a little breeding in the future and I'm either gonna have to make the change or start having to house large amounts of rats and mice

Thank you sir! Can you tell me what key markings helped you confirm she’s a spinner? The headstamp on her is different from all the other spinners I’ve seen. Like I said, I don’t understand it all yet, so maybe I’m focusing on the wrong thing. It will sink into my head eventually... like water in a stone. Haha

I’m not thinking of breeding. And I was going to keep it old school, but most places around here don’t sell live rats, so eventually I’d be stuck using f/t and I think it’s easier to switch them from f/t to live, rather than the other way around. So rather than create a problem for myself down the road, I kept her on the f/t. Also, don’t have to worry about her getting injured.
One time I got my female red tail a rat that was just a little too big, or too smart and it kept pushing her mouth away and jumping back when she struck. She got angry and stressed and I had to get the rat out of there and knock it in the head before it did any damage to her.

That’s funny. BP’s can be picky eaters. Awesome she ate F/T right away.
My BCI and corn snake will eat anything anytime!
I feed all my snakes F/T.
Don't be surprised if when she gets bigger she doesn’t eat every time.
My BP girl just fasted for 5 months. Started eating again 10 days ago.
She is 5 and has fasted each winter for 3 years now.
No no big deal. Just different the BCI’s who rarely refuse a meal.
Good luck!

I think my corn would eat me if it could.

Thanks! I had heard and read that bp’s can be picky eaters, shy, jumpy, etc. She doesn’t fit any of those stereotypes. At the store she was in the same enclosure as a Pin. The employee took the other one out and I said no, I want to see the yellow one. As I reached in, she turned and crawled right onto my hand. When I put her back in the enclosure (I had to come back and pick her up after work) she turned towards me and came back over to the glass (first photo below). Since I got her on Tuesday, she comes to my hand when she spots me and is content to wrap around my fingers and just rest on my palm. Not shy, not jumpy, good eater. In spite of stereotypes, they really do each have their own personality. And I think she loves me. [emoji23]
I had also read about their tendency to skip a meal or fast at times, and usually around winter months.

She sounds awesome! Enjoy her!
Good you did your research. Yeah, BP's skipping meals is part of owning BP's, often times anyways.
Much harder on us than it is on them!

Re: Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
I just wanna preface this by saying I am by far no expert but I just thought I’d put in my two cents. I would say spinner, you can tell spinner by the classic pinstripe markings and spider by the reduced pattern and very green eyes :P I’m not actually to sure, green eyes may also be a trait of pinstripe as well though lol
The only reason I wouldn’t say Majave is in all the spinner mojaves I have seen at least the pattern is even more reduced and the dorsal stripe along the back is more broken.

Yeah, her eyes look blue to me so that confused me. Also the pattern on her head to me looks different to me than other Spinners. I also agree with what you said about Spinner Mojaves having an even more reduced pattern. The exception being that one Spinner Mojave I saw on dreptiles, and that’s why I posted the screenshot. So many morphs, and so many look incredibly similar, I can’t tell them apart. Descriptions on the telltale signs to help identify each morph would be helpful. Is there a book anywhere?
This is the reason I’ve never dated a girl who had an identical twin. I can’t tell them apart and I’d eventually get myself in trouble. [emoji23]

Re: Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
Oh also, from what I read all Spiders and those with the Spider morph in them exhibit some head wobble or corkscrewing to varying degrees. I’m not sure how concrete that is, but she displays absolutely none of that whatsoever.

It can vary by animal.
I have an Albino Spider and she exhibits virtually no wobble either.

Ahhh, ok. I wasn’t sure. Have been reading a lot, trying to educate myself but also cautious of what I read unless I see it corroborated in multiple places by several reputable sources.

Good policy. Get as much info as possible, corroborate, and use common sense/compare to knowledge already acquired.
Yeah, I think it depends on the animal and how much Spider gene is in there.
Apparently, many who do not wobble, still have trouble righting themselves if flipped on their belly. Takes them a little while. Worse for pure spiders.
I wouldn't necessarily try as they feel vulnerable and do not really like it!
In general, as with most things with BP's, it seems to bother us more than them!

When she fed last night, at one point she twisted around with her whole belly up, while using her body to assist swallowing and, from what I can tell, she had no trouble righting herself. The link below is a video I took. Initial strike is normal speed and then it switches to time lapse. She actually goes belly up several times.
Doesn’t bother me, as I had already been aware that is a common trait with bp’s that have the Spider gene. She is beautiful and I just want to give her a loving home.

That isnt really a wobble I don’t believe, just her trying to constrict it. All my ball pythons do that :P My hypo spider girl had a bit of a moderate wobble but it doesn’t effect her quality of life at all, just makes her act a little quirky at times lol.
The worst that happens is maybe she misses her first strike at food every now and again but that’s it, you have nothing to worry about lol. I don’t know if this is a spider thing or if she’s just special but she likes to put her head on things in weird angles XD

Yeah, I don’t see a wobble either. IMO she could have wrapped it a little better, but she is young and has also always been on f/t, so she may not feel a need to throw any more wraps on it. I won’t be deducting any points for form. She gets the job done. [emoji23]

Re: Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
I mainly concentrate on the Morelia (Carpet and Green Tree Python) , and Giant Python forums but there are plenty of people to help you identify what you have here, and they have a lot of experience.
Thank you for your service btw. :salute:

Re: Help identifying my new little beauty, please.
I’ve had quite a few people say they think she looks more like an Enchi Pin. Personally, I thought she looked more like that than the Spinner she was sold as by Petco. One person said they thought they saw some Vanilla.
