THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Lololol... sorry for the cheesy title. But I just had to. Since the name came about a few weeks ago once I chose my guy that song seems to play non stop and that’s how I sing it now... haha
Anyways. I wanted to intro the forum to my newest snake and first ball python... THUNDER. He is a cinnamon banana morph by way of Kicks Balls and Fred Kick. Before I even get into thunder I have to tell everyone about my experience with Fred. I got the snake bug and started to research and joined here. I saw that there were two local NY shows near me. One that just passed which I couldn’t attend and another coming up next month. I did the google search and ran through some breeders across the country. I scanned a vendor list and I saw the name Kicks Balls. I mean too funny not to click especially since they were in NY and attending both shows. Then I go to the website which has the most amazing logo of a sneaker w a python subbed out for the swoosh. I’m a sneaker (kick) guy myself so it seemed like a match made in snake heaven. As if that wasn’t enough. I saw a number that said text or call so I shot a text figuring I’d get a basic answer or told to order online. Instead, I made a friend. Fred will probably tell you I’m a pain in the ass, cause I am, but he never showed it. We exchanged multiple texts pretty much every day since and he never once shied away from my questions or was short with me. Even after I paid for my snake 2 weeks ago, he was still there. He had my money and could have easily went MIA but nope. Every dumb question I had he answered and then some. So I have to saw what a true pleasure !!!
On to Thunder.... he showed up today in amazing condition. He was literally poking at the bag to get out. I have watched a lot of unboxing videos online and they all seem to be balled. This guy was allll over. The heat pack was warm he was packaged perfectly. I had him shipped to my local fed ex center and he was there by 845 am.
I made the mistake of giving the exoterra 3D background a shot. He got back there right away. So I ran out and grabbed some plants to create a barrier. If he still works his way back there it’s coming out. He’s been all over the enclosure today. I was joking that he’s like the first person in the Real World houses who goes to every room to pick the best one. It was like he was test driving every spot. Hot hide check. Cold hide check. All over the back ground and behind as mentioned. I guess he needs to get to know his new home and settle.
Temps humidity and enclosure seem to all be doing well. And I’m going to keep a close eye on him as he gets settled in. Thanks for looking and I’ll keep posting !!

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
I would jam a ruler in between the background and the tank to prevent him from getting back there.
-
Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
That’s a great idea MD thanks for the tip. I really filled it in with the plants and created almost a screen so to speak and it looks rather nice to my eye at least. We shall see. If not I may just pull it out all together.

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
So Thunder has been quite the explorer and I know it’s early on but at first I thought maybe he was just active or a climber but now I am feeling like maybe something else is going on.
I ended up removing the background it was always going to be an issue and he was dead set on getting back there. I took it out and auctioned some plants all along the back that he has been in and seems to enjoy.
I do notice him climbing higher and hanging near the heat lamp. My under heater reads 91 and same on my temp gun.
Is it possible he’s looking for heat and can’t or hasn’t found the hot spot? I know snakes can sense heat so it should be easy for him to find right ? I have a UTH that’s at least a third of the tank on the far left with a hide over a good portion of it and some exposed if he wanted the under belly out of the hide. Then there is middle ground and a hide on the cool side.
When I first got him he literally went in and out of each hide and climbed all around. Yet he seems to prefer resting buried in the trees towards the top by the light.
Thoughts ?

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Well, since you’ve only just got him I would say a lot of roaming is to be expected. He will probably be quite stressed from the move and he’s in a new place with new smells so he will want to check everything out to make sure he is safe in there. My BP, Ramen, took about 5 days to calm down completely, and I mostly just tried to stay out of his way so I didn’t stress him more. Just keep an eye on your temperatures and humidity, to make sure that isn’t what is stressing him out. Also, are you regulating your heat sources with thermostats?
-
Hey thanks raptor! That makes me feel a bit better.
Yes of course all is regulated. Not to knock anyone but I feel I went about this as careful and educated as I possibly could. Other than taking a glass exoterra from a friend that he never used which put me on to snakes to start because I really want a pvc type cage. I think all else I did rather well or based on things I read here and my research.
UTH is on one therm and the lamp on another. UTH is about 90. Ambient temp ranges from 76-80. Areas under the lamp get to mid 80s and the cool side is about 74-75. Humidity has been 50-60. Still playing with that and may need to add more water to my rep chip and mix to hold better humidity. I was worried because my apt can get warmer and a tad humid so I figured it’s always best to add water and increase then try and decrease once the substrate is too wet.
I guess i just need to let him chill he’s new to me I am new to him. He needs to settle in and find his places and I just need to do as you say and give him space. Also w the background mishaps yesterday I had to handle him and move him more than I wanted to or should have. I was being stubborn and so was he and finally I said you won and pulled it out.
Thanks again

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Great, it sounds like you’re fine then! And I just wanted to check since people will sadly often just throw a heat mat under their viv and think that’s that. The cool side could be a couple of degrees warmer (I think 77-80 is the recommendation but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) but other than that it sounds like you’re doing a good job of making sure Thunder is comfortable and well looked after :)

Great looking display. Im not familiar with Backgrounds except for the paper ones on fish tanks so not sure what yours is made of BUT, I use DAP Kitchen and Bath Clear silicone on any hole that needs to be filled where I an wires or wires that need to be tacked down to wall/floor so snake cant get behind them. Sometimes I use tape on the wires until the silicone dries then remove the tape and put the snakes back in. I can clean the enclosure without it effecting it too. Thats would be something to consider using so he cant get behind it. Its great in multiple coats... Tuff Rubbery stuff and wont hurt the snakes.

lol i was totally singing that song while reading your thread title.
congrats! welcome to the Banana Cinny club! :)
i love his flames, the blushing coming up from the belly between the side pattern. u got a good one.

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Thanks yea I really wanted to make sure I covered my basses. I’m an aquarium guy gone the reptile route so I make sure my animals get the best care someone can give and I’m always learning and trying to improve and grow.
I hear so so many mixed feelings on temps I have bumped it a few degrees and I’m still playing with probe position light height and all that to get to right. It’s barely been two days so we are both getting used to one another but I guess that’s part of the fun right ??
-
Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Thanks for the Info calm. I actually pulled it. I gave it a go and it was stressing me and maybe him as well. I’m an aquarium guy too!!
i just stuck a lot of suction plants to the back and he’s been all over them so seems like a good compromise.

Good evening all and happy Friday !
so Thunder seems to be settling in or so it seems...
After his day and a half / 2 day roam around the cage and figuring it out he seems to be settling in to a routine.
I swapped out the 3d back with a ton of suctioned plants which he seems to love. At night he’s all over them and loves to hang out on them and bake...
i also added this big fake yet very real looking stump that has a lot of
loops that he has really taken to as a chill place for him.
Im a bit worried about my temps and the fact that he doesn’t seem to want or use the under belly heat area or that hide. Feeling that the hide I had there was too big or open I went and got a smaller one that’s tighter for him.
The hot side and hide is right around 89-90. Up in the trees and under the heat lamp about the same. Ambient temps seem to be 77-79 and fall a bit at night.
When i heat gun the cool side and that hide its sometimes as low as 73. Yet he seems to stay in the cool side all day. Should I be worried about that? At night he’s back up in the trees baking away and seems to love it.
He has has many options of heat and temp but this seems to be his routine. I’d have to imagine if he needed heat he’d find or use the hot hide, right?
Should I change something or let it be if that’s how he prefers it ?
-
he seems to be themoregulating between the cool hide and the plants to warm up and cool down, so he sounds like he's doing fine. that's just a beep being a beep. we try to give them the best and sometimes they're like Nah, imma do it my own derpy way. just be glad your BP has grown attached to a moldy, cardboard box hide. ;) anyway i think in time, he will figure out it would be easier to thermoregulate between the hot and cool hides. :gj:
Edit: what sneakers do u have BTW? i'm trying to get into it. i have a fresh pair of '16 Ken Griffey Presidential's. :)
-
Thanks it sounds so. It seems like he has his own routine or maybe he’s just a climber and doesn’t realize what type of snake he is and he’s a want to be tree boa or something!
I have a ton of kicks I’m a huge sneaker head and have been into and collecting sneakers since I was probably 10 years old. I just got the cement Jordan threes that retroed with the Nike air on back Saturday

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
So today is day 5 with thunder. His routine seems down pat by 830-9 am he’s back in the cool hide after roaming, climbing and baking all night long...
Would anyone suggest offering food tonight ? Or should I wait until Tuesday his one week anniversary?
Since he seems very active in the evening should I thaw and warm the mouse and just leave it right outside his hide for him?

Late to the game here, sorry.
A couple thoughts.
Ambient temps and hot spot/hot side seem dead on.
However, 73f is too cold anywhere in the tank.
Coolside for BP should be no lower that 78f.
I keep my cool side around 80f. Ambient temps are 80-84f (big tank so it can vary distance from heat sources). Hot side is 89f.
I would get temps dialed in and then feed.
Read up on proper defrosting techniques. Also, probably need to shake on a tongs for him. Not all BP’s will eat a prey item left for them.
Snakes will thermoregulate even if temps are not ideal. They know they need to cool down, but don’t necessarily realize it’s too cold for them.
Beautiful snake and nice setup.
If if I recall you kept fish, correct?
Me too. I used to breed frontosas in a 240g as well as other tanks.
Reptiles are more forgiving and interactive. However, the attention to detail you need for fish to thrive transfers well into reptile keeping.
Keep up the good work and keep learning and asking questions.
Thunder will do great!

Hey daksi. Good memory, I am the discus guy lol!
notning has been down to 73 thankfully. Not sure if I said that if I did it was a typo. It was around 75 a bit but that was only day 1-2 and I adjusted things and it’s been a solid 77-79 ambient and cool side with my hot spot 90.
He was due for a feed the day he shipped so that was skipped and he was a solid weekly feeder for the breeder. So I’m worried about making him wait two weeks and really taking him off feed.
Are you suggesting waititng until he’s out of the hide and active to then try and simulate life by wiggling the rat and getting him to strike ?

Okay, cool, I misread, a typo, or you have since corrected. Sounds like temps are dead on. Awesome!
I had the flu, followed by a 2 week cough, and then got a stomach bug this weekend(and still have the cough). I am not 100%, sorry.
For what's it worth, if you kept discus successfully, reptiles are going to seem easy! You are going to do great!
Regarding feeding, I will post in a second, something a wrote from another thread, about defrosting properly.
Most BP's want their heat pits to get excited (so warm prey - I'll explain in the next post) and want a little movement.
My Shayna is a weirdo. She only strikes, 1/15 times. More when she was younger, but still, she's very shy. She wants me to shake, and if she doesn't strike immediately, I put down and walk away. She, if not fasting, usually eats right away. She will pull into her hide and want to eat alone. I give her space.
Most BP's, especially if they have eaten live, want some action. Not to the point of scaring them/hitting them in the head, etc. Just a little movement. USE TONGS!
I think your guy should eat. If not though, do not worry, and wait until next week.
If he doesn't take right away, but seems interested, I would leave the mouse near his hide/him for a little bit (an hour or two) and he might take it. I would also feed at night in near darkness. You will probably get a better food response.

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
As promised, how to properly defrost a rodent. People have different approaches and techniques. This is what I do. I "only" have 3 snakes, so this works well for me.
I copied from another post and it's all in bold, ugh. Sorry.
STEPS FOR DEFROSTING F/T RODENTS/PREY
1. Put prey item(s) into appropriate size plastic bag (1 for each). I use Quart size ziplock bags up to a medium rat. NOTE: Bags are optional. Some people just throw the prey in the water. I like the bags, but you have to squeeze the air out of them.
2. Fill the container/storage box 3/4 of the way with room temp to slightly warm water. If you have a temp gun (which you should, so if you don't, get one), make sure the water is not hotter than 85-90F, or there about.
3. Put F/T prey item(s) in water. Cover (optional) and leave for an hour +/-.
4. After an hour, rotate/flip prey. If in plastic bags, they often will stay on whatever side you put them in on. So if mouse is on left side, turn to right side, etc.
5. Leave for another hour +/- for a TOTAL of about 2 hours (up to medium sized rat - longer if bigger prey for when ROE is bigger and eating Large rats, for example).
6. Check that prey is defrosted totally through. Squeeze at different sections of the preys body. Should be cool/room temp to touch, but be soft with no cold spots. If hard (except for bone), in abdomen, for example, or cold, put back in water until room temp and soft.
7. Take prey out of the container/storage box and put aside.
8. Fill container with hot water from tap. If using temp gun, water temp should be 110-130F, not more.
9. Drop prey item into water for 30 seconds +/-. If multiple prey items, do one at a time. You want each item hot when you offer.
10. Remove (if hot water, with tongs).
11. Dry as best as you can, and is quickly as you can, with paper towels. I dry with paper towels while I am walking from the bathroom where I defrost to the snake tanks. I kind of wrap the prey item up in them. It's ten feet, so by the time I get to the tanks, the prey is drier, but still warm.
12. Open tank and offer ASAP.

thanks for your help and interest as well it is much appreciated.
I went with the drop and run method lol. I waited until I was about to pass out and I know he gets very active. Lights went out. Mouse went in. Gave him his privacy and mouse was gone when I woke up around 430 this am

Interesting regime ... once they are thawed you can simply give the mouse / rat a ten second blast with hairdryer and offer INSTANTLY on tongs ..
Most of mine only strike from their hides so I dangle it in front of the entrance... BAM !
Always feed in the evenings ..

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
Here is an updated look at his set up since the initial pics I posted were with that darn background that gave me nothing but trouble. That has since been removed and replaced with plants all around
And I got him this tall tree stump thing that he seems to love to climb all over and bake on. I caught him this am being all king of the castle before he went back to his cool hide to chill. It was fun watching him for sure. Sorry in advance for the glare in some pics. I tried my best.

you can use great stuff foam to fill in the holes, but you'll have to let it air out for a while until there are no more fumes.

So so what happened? Your dude got inside and got stuck?
looks like you had to smash it up to free him.

Man oh man fun times in snake decor land ! Lol
ive had a wild week or so myself between the 3d background fun to this thing... I’m wondering if I grab a smaller plastic or silk plant and jam it in the hole it will stop him from
even trying. I know he loves that dang stump now and I don’t want to pull it and seal it and all and throw him off course more. Maybe I’ll go the stuffed route to start and see what happens

This is Ra before she got too big, she’s now pushing 600g and can’t get her fat butt behind it now, that was the second time I caught her doing that before I removed it completely, now like I said she’s too big so I put it back and she just leaves it alone.

Feed #2 for my boy thunder was another great success!!!
he took the mouse pretty quick this time. I tried to feed him later in the evening when he usually gets pretty active. He’s doing really well.
Im feeling great about his progress and settling in. I’m thinking one more meal and then getting into some light handling sessions. I’m excited to finally be able to touch and interact with him.
Its been tough keeping the patience in place but I want to do what’s best for him.

Re: THUNDER... feel tha THUNDER... My snakes name is THUNDER!!!
My boy shed!!!! Whooo hoop first time for me and I must say I feel like such a proud papa. I’m going on about a month with him. God willing he eats his third consecutive meal tomorrow and then I can start to get a handling schedule with him. This is my first shed for any snake with me. Bumble my mandarin rat snake shed the day I got him from the breeder so I don’t count that.
Any suggestions or ideas for what you guys do with them. I feel like I need to keep it like when my kids first got their hair cut! Lol
Any feedback or thoughts on the shed it looks like a full shed all in one piece he’s been thermoregulating and due to eat tomorrow so I don’t want to bother him and get him out of a hide post shed. Hope he eats tomorrow.
Here are some pics.
