Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Exactly a week ago today, I bit the bullet and put the deposit on a male banana/coral glow emperor pinstripe ball python from Dynasty Reptiles (who have been great to work with)! He won't be coming home until at least the middle of next month. I'm dying to meet him, but I'm also glad he'll also have time to grow just a biiiit bigger and learn how to python before his entire life is upended.
Chun Ku was kind enough to send me pictures until he comes home. :)

He looks a little more comfortable here, although in the picture taken after this one, he's trying to stuff his head under his body again.

Baby got back! He's quite the chubmeister.

He's really beautiful. That wait is gonna kill you! But will be so worth it. Plenty of time to get his setup perfected.

Thank you!!! Ugh, it's only been a week but it feels like it's been much longer since I picked him out. I'm sure the time will go by quickly, but it looks so far away on my calendar.

Thank you! I think he's about the prettiest snake on the planet, maybe excepting a few that cost thousands. Of course, that could be the budding snake mom in me talking too. :P I'm glad I have extra time to play with his tubs. I've been running the heat on them empty with a water dish, and have had some amusing and perplexing results (my cold side humidity has been getting up to 90%, somehow, which I was not expecting in a semi-arid state where winters are so dry that even people skin becomes reptilian if neglected... And the tub even has holes! :confusd::confusd::confusd::confusd:).

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Congrats! He’s gorgeous. I just purchased my first BP from Chun. He was great to work with and his animals are beautiful. I’ll definitely be buying from him again.

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Well... Everything is here except the snake. After a few weeks of indecision, I've decided to just house him in the 32 quart tub I originally bought, instead of the six quart that I also have. This is partly due to the fact that Dynasty won't ship unless the low temperatures are above 35 degrees (totally understandable), and checking the Weather Channel's monthly averages indicated that this is not likely to happen until April. :O We have had some unseasonably warm days, but the lows are still generally in the mid to high 20's. He's already about four or five months old at this point, so not a very little hatchling, and he's only going to get bigger, so I figured this might be the best bet. So, until he can be shipped, I thought some tub pictures might be in order!
I need to get another hide for the right side, and definitely some substrate, but I'm pretty pleased with how cluttered it looks with the mopani wood, half log, and water dish. I've been test my temps and humidity, and definitely need to solder some more holes to keep it dryer, which is the opposite of the problem I thought I'd have! https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...12ef92482b.jpghttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...d63b4e47e5.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!!!! (I hope.)
Got an email from Chun this weekend stating that if temperatures in my area hold at the end of the week, the little guy will be sent out Thursday and I can pick him up at the hub Friday! Fingers crossed that temperatures stay put!
Also received a new picture of the little fella- I do believe he's grown a bit, and no longer feels the need to sit on his own head for pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e191153cfb.jpg

What a handsome fella.... you should be proud! I know it' hard to stay patient, but you will have him in your hands before you know it. Let us know how the transfer goes into his new home. Thanks for sharing!

Fingers and toes crossed that the weather holds out for you, congratulations good looking noodle 😊

Very nice looking little guy! A few months back I got a female emperor pin (hypo) from Chun. She is gorgeous.. But a turd lol... If I open her tub and am across the room, she will see and start bluff striking lol. Hopefully she'll grow out of it. It would be interesting if ours were related. do you know how old yours is? I got mine in November (I think) at ~120 grams.

Thank you! I love how pale his accents are. Your little lady is beautiful, and it sounds like she has a big personality to go with her coloration. I don't have a hatch date yet, but the ad was first posted in October, I think, so I'm guessing he hatched around August or September. It would be just crazy if they are actually siblings!

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
[Meant to start documenting how things were going over the weekend, got sick, and lacked the energy to post much.]
So little dude arrived Friday, and after weighing him and putting him in his tub, I went to work for about 8 hours. Came home and he was still out and about (pictures 2 and 3), but by the next morning (Saturday) he'd shoved things around in his tub, and was crammed under his warm hide. He's been there about ever since, other than a brief jaunt around the tub Saturday evening. I take this to be a good sign that he doesn't have much to complain about right now. Saturday I left him completely alone, but yesterday I replaced his water with fresh and peeped under the hide to make sure he was good. He came out for a tiny while after than, but has been back under his hide ever since. I might order some slightly bigger hides, but he doesn't stick out too bad right now, so I'll probably leave those in there for a little while even if they're a smidge small.
My dad has had far more interest in him than anyone else in my family, oddly, so I sent him some pictures. He thinks he looks very fat and round, which is probably better than scary or gross.

I'm glad the little guy made it ok. Mine took right to f/t mice after I gave her a week to settle in. She's finally gone to f/t weaned rats for me. Hopefully yours will be a good feeder. :)

Thanks, I'm hoping so too. :) He was last fed on the 2nd, and I plan to try to feed him Friday, so hopefully he'll be good and hungry by then. Did you have a tough time switching yours over to rats?
Oh! I found out his hatch date was 08/16/17! How close is that to your girl's?

Thank you! I can't believe I have such a gorgeous creature living in my house. :D He's such a perfect shade of yellow, and his really light parts are a very light cream, almost white... Makes it hard not to start looking for a future girlfriend for him. :rolleye2:

He ate! (I think)
I went and picked up some feeder mice yesterday from a feeder store the next town over (nice, clean, fat feeders as far as I can tell so far, and frozen feeders are 50% off on Fridays :D). I put one in a tupperware in the fridge before I left for work, so it thawed there for 8 hours. When I got home, I put it in a snack baggy, and set it in some very slightly warmer than room temp water for 1.5-2 hours while I made dinner for human consumption. Mouse was nice and thawed by then, so it took it into the snake room, hit it with a hairdryer until the head was at least 100 degrees, and then danged it in front of the hide he was in... Which turned out to be the hide I thought he was in. Feeding an empty hide does not work well, fyi. Apparently he was in his cool hide, which I've never seen him use. So back to the hairdryer mouse goes, dangled in front of the right hide this time. What little bit I saw of him didn't even twitch, so I tried one more time, and then, feeling like an awful (to use tttaylorrr's word) snom, I left it in front of the hide he was in. Even slept in the other bedroom to make extra sure he would have enough peace and quiet to check out the mouse.
As far as I can tell, there is no mouse left this morning. I even poked my head inside his tub to double check, and it's not anywhere obvious. He's back to his warm hide, with a loop of body hanging out, so I'm going to tentatively assume that he found mouse, ate mouse, and is now digesting mouse. Tomorrow I'll check under the hides when I change his water, but I'd like to leave him as alone to digest (if that is indeed what he is doing) as possible.

I fed her 3-4 times with f/t mice just to get her started and feeding for me. I then began thawing a f/t rat pup with the mice and letting it sit with the rat while coming up to room temp (i.e. put the mouse on top of it). This was done for 3-4 more feedings, then I thawed the rat pup in the same ziploc as the mouse, but did not do the scent-rubbing. I have offered her one un-mouse-scented weaned rat so far and she took it. I have not had a chance to do another feeding because she was in shed. I will be attempting again tomorrow.
I will have to go back and look at my communications with him to see what her hatch date was. I didn't put that info in my record book like I normally do. I will get back with you once I find it.
Mine is a total nut job. She is extremely skittish and if I've pulled her tub out, and she sees me across the room, she will start defense striking towards me :P I'm hoping she grows out of that lol.

What a beauty, worth the wait in my opinion. I have a banana pinstripe named Nova and I gotta say, those two genes just belong together, and anything else in the combo is icing on the cake.

Very interesting and helpful, thank you! I might have to change that process up slightly, since I don't have any other snakes to feed a thawed rat to, but I'm thinking of maybe feeding him mice a couple more times, then getting some rats and freezing them all together so their scent is somewhat mingled? I do also have a pet mouse, so no shortage of used bedding to thaw a rat in if need be. Good luck with tomorrow's feeding! I bet she'll be hungry now that she's shed.
Hahaha, maybe yours ended up with all the crazy. :P I haven't actually seen mine out and about since the third day after he came home. He was pretty curious, and came right up to the front of the tub, but I had my phone up to take a picture and my case is white, so maybe he was thinking it might be food? I peep under his hide every other day or so to make sure he's doing okay, and he just stays there and looks up at me like, "Do you require something? Am I dinner?" We'll see how he is once he gets more used to things and I can handle him. :D

Thank you! He was totally worth it. It's pretty hard to beat a nice coral glow or banana pin, especially since they seem to age well and don't lose too much color, if any. Nova sounds lovely!

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Peeked into the tub when I woke up this morning and discovered that he had shed! The shed tip of his tail was sitting outside of the hide, and when I lifted the pot, found the rest, and a slightly bigger snake. Other than the end of his tail, it all seems to be in one piece, but for some reason his eyecaps haven't come off. It's weird- all of his head is there, but not the eyecaps, and not even any little holes where the eyecaps should be. His humidity has always been very good, but I think there were times when it was in the 60s and not the 70s, so maybe that contributed. I put a damp washcloth in his tub so that, if they bother him, he has something soft to rub his face on.
His hides are definitely pretty small for him now, more in height than in width, but I'm torn between trading them out soon or waiting until he's eaten a couple more times first. It's becoming the equivalent of a large bear trying to cram itself under a standard sized table. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4d09c3f527.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5dc5c29f21.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Tonight he struck his mouse!!!!
It was all very convenient, because he was out of his hide cruising (which he's done intermittently since he's shed, probably hoping for food). Unfastioned the latches on his tub, warmed mouse, and offered it, but he was not too keen on having something near his face, so I had to warm it one more time. Held it in his general direction, and was thinking of just leaving it since he seemed a little frightened, and then WHAM!!! He had it slammed and constricted faster than I could see. Within a couple of minutes he was trying to chow down on it, so I've left him alone and will check on him in a small while.
Freshly shed snek is hungry snek.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...68c5e5d622.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Some big things have been happening the past couple of weeks! Last week Horatio got his little flower platters replaced with bigger hides, which he took in stride after a small period of befuddlement. He no longer looks like an overstuffed clam in a shell.
He is quite a piglet, and seems happy to take his mouse any way he can get it. The bigger hides take up more space, so I kind of had to place it in front of his hide, and he struck seconds later with very little participation on my part. I hope he continues to eat this willingly!
Today was the first time I've handled him since I got him, and we both had some moments of awkwardness while he tried to figure out what was going on and I tried to figure out how to snake with my wee hands. Eventually we got it mostly figured out, and I got some nice shots. He was a very good boy, but was really pleased to go back in his tub. The scales on his neck seem pretty dull compared to the rest of him, so I'm wondering if he's already heading back into shed, but his eyes are as light as I've ever seen them.
Included is a top-down photo of his tub. The water dish goes in the compressed circle in the middle. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ebfd28a66f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f4d03b81e3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...565c94b1e5.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Checked his tub today, and noticed it smelled different than usual. Someone had left some nice, big, smelly presents under his warm hide. Cleaned the mess, and took the opportunity to weigh him while he's empty. I'm impressed by how much he's grown in about a month's time!
Still working on cleaning and deoderizing his warm hide, so at the moment he's, of course, sitting on that side of the tub, sulking while he waits. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d30a11d92e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b741fe66e8.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Wow, been a while since I updated this- life's been keeping me pretty busy.
Horatio is doing very well, and growing like a weed! He now weighs 380 grams, despite not eating for two weeks in April (being wide enough to eat a large jumbo mouse does not mean he thinks he's ready to, apparently, or that he will stop pooping every two or three weeks). Last week he got a nice clean tub, and he and I are both getting a bit more comfortable with handling.
He has extremely lovely denim blue eyes. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...509668c450.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2885bead91.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...beea0e8e09.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...da80c6d7be.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Horatio shed tonight! It seems like I've been waiting for forever for him to shed again, since he last shed in March, but he'd been hiding in his warm hide for over a week, so I was hoping he was brewing a new skin. It's all in one piece save for the top of his head, which seems to be a consistent thing with him.
Contemplating attempting to feed him a rat pup instead of a mouse, since he should be nice and hungry, either tomorrow or Friday. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bee0086104.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...547e96d901.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Not only did Horatio eat for me after shedding, but I believe he also ate for me tonight as well! (I really doubt he dragged the mouse back into his hide and dropped it, but I don't like saying something for sure until I know for sure he did eat it.)
Switching to rat pups waa a no-go a couple weeks ago. I may try again in the future, but since he didn't eat for a month, my main prority is just getting him consistently feeding again. Offered him a jumbo mouse on the 15th, which he made quite a mess with- it didn't burst, but somehow he got blood all over himself and his warm hide, the dork. It was the biggest meal he'd ever had, so I waited 10 days instead of the usual 7. Let this one do some thawing on his tub beforehand, and he was locked, loaded, and ready to fire! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...20267af599.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Ohhhhhh my gosh...
1 week of no food to let him get nice and hungry for his transition to rats turned into 2 weeks of no food because he was un shed, which then became 3 weeks of no food because he shed, but eh, wasn't actually hungry. Gave him 9 days, and tried again tonight.
Woof! Not only did he strike his rat, but he didn't even bother to drag it inside one of his hides. I've never seen him eat before, so I'm super excited, but he has some, um, peculiar contortions to try to suck his rat down ASAP. I guess no one told him about the helpfullness of gravity...

Oy.
Tonight was an ordeal. Still learning how to feed big, floppy rats with gargantuan floppy heads, so I had to do a lot of reheating and re-offering. Fortunately, Horatio seemed quite hungry, and waited calmly and patiently for me to get my crap together.
Also, the rats are getting manicures from now on. One of the rear claws snagged on his bottom jaw on the way down, which was disconcerting for all involved. Luckily he seems to have gotten it resolved, much to his relief as well I'm sure.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2a281a9e84.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6d470a554c.jpg

Try waiting until the snake is settled under a hide then dangle the warm rat over the entrance.. some will only strike from within their hides .
Guess you can snip the feet off to make things easier ..
Years ago I had adopted a Royal who'd only eat thawed chicks but they were soooooo cute that I had to snip off their heads and feet so I was just having to feed balls of yellow fluff each time ( 3 at each meal) ..

He was actually under his hide the whole time, but he came out after he ate for a brief while. He's a pretty jumpy snake, so I'm working on learning how to puppet the rat in a way that prevents the head from flopping in apparently terrifying ways. This was also only his 3rd rat ever, so I feel that could be a factor as well. I'm experimenting with making the rat damp as well, since he's responded very well to damp or wet rats (although corolation does not equal causation).
It's funny how removing something as seemingly insignificant as the feet can change how we feel about feeding an animal. [emoji23] I may try de-footing the rats if it seems like more than a one-off.

Thank you! His face matches his sweet, if timid personality. Chun was amazing to work with. You can tell he really cared about his snakes, and his customers. He even sent out little emails to let those of us with incliment climate know that he was checking the weather every week, and that our snakes were being cared for. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0085d3ee94.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Horatio hasn't eaten in a few weeks, but is gaining weight in spite of this, and is old enough where he may have started a winter fast, so I try not to stress.
Still waiting on my AP cage (week 15, woot woot!), as I am excited about the ability to keep a slightly more stable ambient temp with the RHP (and about the opportunity to break out the power drill, Dremel, and hot glue gun).
The food setting on my phone camera so far seems to be the best one for taking pictures of sir pretty boy. Apparently he doesn't like having substrate on his head, because he dunked himself in his freshly changed water dish last night to remove some... And so his faithful servent emptied and refreshed it once more. Thank you! I haven't had him very long, in the grand scheme of things, but I don't think he yellow has faded or browned at all. If anything, I think the darker pin markings may have faded a bit: They're still there, but maybe not as prominently as when I first got him. I hope he stays this yellow as he ages.

Thank you! What are you waiting on?
Loveland right now, but I lived in Greeley for a while last year, and FoCo before that. The world is a small, small place!

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Since Horatio hasn't eaten in a little over a month, I tried a few new concepts last night to see if they would make a difference. After it had thawed, I warmed his rat in slightly hot water for three, 10 minute cycles. Instead of hair-drying on the floor in front of rhe tub, as I usually do, I toasted the rat on the table next to the tub. Knowing that the sound of the hair dryer=food, he poked his head out of his hide... And either was very extra tempted by what he smelled, or was very hungry. Under one of his mopani pieces he went so that he could watch me warm his rat with the air of a food critic watching a chef prepare a meal. His strike was quick, and he happily proceeded to eat it in a variety of contortions, like the little weirdo he is at heart. [emoji16]
With that over with, I'm wondering if I should contact AP next week and make sure everything is going alright with his new enclosure. I know 16 weeks is not an unusual amount of time to wait for them, and I know they've had conventions taking up their time, so I definitely don't want to make them feel pestered, but I also would like to know for sure that it hasn't gotten lost somewhere in the shuffle. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...422d458c1a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5bead038d6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b537b05df5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7cb1af6430.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b9ce7da6a9.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Horatio seems to make up for being so bright that he never looks dull in shed by becoming not only pink on his belly, but almost all over as well. It's actually a flattering side-effect that photos just don't capture well.
He needs new hides, I think, but I'm trying to wait until my T10 arrives before splurging on those. *stares hopefully at email*https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b26675b046.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4402ae436b.jpg

Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Today is fresh snake day!
Either his pattern is getting more distinct with each shed, or his markings just fade as he gets closer to shedding gradually enough for me not to notice. He does seem to have some bew marking either way, especially on his tail, which hasn't had anything really distinct on it until now. However, he was very hyper thus morning, so pictures of such, as we'll as a new weight, will have to wait.
He also finally seems to have gotten rid of the little rub marks on his head from this summer. Re: Banana/Coral Glow Emperor Pin Progression
Today we rung in the first feeding day of 2019!
Since switching to rats full time in October, Horatio has only wanted to strike and eat once a month. Tried feeding him after he shed two weeks ago, and he was mildly interested, but not interested enough to eat. Thus, I'm just going to feed him at the begining of each month until at least spring, when his appetite might pick up a little.
I had the rat on the edge of the tub when he struck the first time. His strikes make me jump, and since he didn't get a good grasp on the rat, it flew out of the tub and a short distance across the room. We decided the five second rule was fine.
He still does not have rhe best grasp of gravity and physics, as this video of him weight lifting his dinner displays.
