Juice, the Borneo Short Tail Python progression thread
Since I finally decided on a name, I figured it was a good time to start a progression thread.
I took him out for a few minutes to change his water and check him out, so I grabbed a few quick pics.
I also added a few of my favorites from a previous thread.

Updates have been slow because he's been a difficult eater. He's got an awesome temperament so far, but handling has been very limited. I had him out for a few minutes yesterday and snapped a few pics and got a weight on him. He's only lost about 5% body weight, so I'm not overly concerned yet, but seriously hoping he'll snap out of a winter food strike soon. Next offering is Wed night. Fingers crossed he starts eating sooner than later and packs on some weight, I wanna see this guy grow!! Plus, I want to be able to handle him more frequently. It's pretty amazing how differently he handles from any other snake I've ever handled. He doesn't wrap around my hands or arms AT ALL. Every other python, boa and colubrid I've handled wraps to hang on.
Anyway, here's a few pics for now. More to come, I promise...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3ec438c1b1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d3847adb51.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5628d448e6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...88fcdbdd91.jpg

Thank you. I had my mind made up that I was getting a BRB and my next snake after that would be a blood or STP....Then, just browsing morph market saw this guy and he flipped me. I contacted N.E.R.D. that day and picked him up the following day. So my next will be a BRB...or BCI...or...hahaha

Nice looking STP! These guys are on my list for sure. The way you describe handling him sounds like handling my KSBs, they don't wrap at all and you just have to support them. I'm thinking it is because they don't climb at all in the wild and stay buried a lot of the time. From what I've been told, STPs, are very ground-dwelling animals too, so probably don't know to wrap to hold on to things.

Yeah, these guys are definitely extremely terrestrial. Their heavy bodies aren't built for climbing, that's for sure.
It almost surprised me that they don't wrap even a little, just instinctively if nothing else. But nope, nothing at all.

Great looking short tail! I love mine and will have another in its way once the weather warms.
Mine seems to prefer to dangle her back have off my arm when I hold her. I’ll start with her supporter along most of her body in a cradling type hold. Then she will slowely scoot backward until about 1/2-3/5 of her is dangling. Then she will seem content. And when she is out she will find a hidy hole with her tail, then back scoot until just her snoot it poking out. They’re funny sausages.

Thanks!! I'm so glad I decided to go with a STP this time around. I've really enjoyed the differences about him vs. any other snakes I've ever kept.

I'm yet to see the back scooting with Juice, but he does seem to like his back end hanging down a bit.
I've also read and seen various videos saying STPs don't tend to like being on our shoulders/around our necks. But like much of the info out there, I see plenty of conflicting info that says otherwise. I've only tested the waters a bit putting Juice on my shoulders, but he's seemed perfectly content so far. Any experience with that?

Also, Miss Kitty is a beauty! Is your incoming STP a Borneo as well?

Thanks. I’ve got an orange head sumatran coming. I’ve heard from several breeders of orange heads that, that is what she is. And she is getting a more chocolate brown color, so she may be.

I haven’t tried my girl on my shoulders at all. I barely even trust her on my arm without holding her with the other hand.
I always find the back scoots a funny thing to watch. It’s probably just a matter of one until you see yours do it. I see it a lot when I’m sitting and out a blanket over my lap. Once she finds the hole under the blanket she will scoot on under the cover. Even moving forward she more scoots as opposed to serpentine. These guys have such odd movements that it’s fun to watch.

Yeah, I just looked over Miss Kitty's thread. And I'm not experienced enough to help ID her. Obviously my first thought was Borneo, and to my untrained eye I still see Borneo. But I also see Sumatran. Either way, awesome snake! She's growing quickly too.
I'm yet to have any snakes shipped, but the waiting would kill me!! Hahahaha. Hopefully mother nature cooperates and you get your new boy soon.

Yeah, they tend to all get lumped together. Until they gain more popularity in the pet trade I think they probably will. Hopefully it starts trending that way now that they're starting to shed the bad reputation. I'm hearing more stories of STPs being sweethearts than terrors these days.

Between bloods, Borneos and Sumatrans there are plenty of beautiful options. From real dark to much lighter to reds and oranges...I'm very happy I went this route. That being said, I still need my first boa....

Just when I thought I was sold on the red, I see your black one and OH WOW!

And Boas, what can I say, they are truly a special species. I just love them.

Generally speaking, I like contrast when choosing morphs. Luckily, being in the restaurant business finances limit my options and narrows the field, hahaha.

My experience with boas is very limited. When I was in the hobby years ago I kept Kings, corns and a BP. Of course, back then the internet wasn't an option to buy snakes (at least to my knowledge) so options were so much more limited. Now that the hobby has expanded so much it's hard to decide which species to keep. That being said, I pretty much had my mind made up to go for a BRB, but saw Juice and switched gears. Now, I know I want to add a boa next, but BCIs are making it tough to decide between a BCI and a BRB.

Yeah, choosing snakes these days is difficult. Of course a BRB is on my wishlist as well. So I could not tell you which one is a better first choice. But I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed in a BCI.

    Punch is gorgeous!
My only concern with a BCI would be the size. My girlfriend has a "rule" that my snakes can't be longer than she is tall. She's 5 foot nothing, so that limits my options. I do feel like a BCI might be ok though if I get a smaller locality male and start from a juvenile....fingers crossed

Look at central american, Nicaraguan, or any of the island or Mexican locality boas. They will all stay pretty small. My male CA motley is 3 years old now and is only maybe 4' long and about the girth of a hot dog. My 3.5 year old BCI hypo male is about 5' long and a good bit girthier.

But, with any locality, getting a male will typically mean a smaller size and if you start off with a baby, the slow growth will help you adjust and she will probably develop a liking for him before he gets bigger. Your STP will probably far outweigh even a 6' boa just by girth and mass alone.

I have boas and a BRB. both are great, but I'd go with a boa first... They tend to be out more in their enclosure in the day, easier to view, and a little mellower to handle. I have gotten lucky with my BRB in that she never went through a nippy / flighty stage, but I've heard that is common with BRBs. None of my 3 boas has ever been nippy or flighty and are a lot calmer generally speaking (easier to handle).

Thank you. I'm in the very early stages of research into BCIs and narrowing down localities to find the smaller ones. This reply definitely helps. And to this point, primarily just coincidence, all my snakes are males, so why break the trend, hahaha.

As for the STP outweighing a 6 foot boa, I'm counting on it, hahaha. I showed my girlfriend pictures and videos of adults so she was aware of the mass of a Borneo. She didn't love it, but gave me the green light. Apparently she gets more hung up on length than girth, so I went girthy, hahaha.

Even a male Colombian boa will not go much over 6 feet. The boa will not be as thick as your STP either.

That said, is your girl going to take out the tape measure in 5 years to make sure the snake is under 5 feet?

They spend most of their time curled up and a great many folks over estimate the length of their snakes when "eye balling" measurements.

    http://i.imgur.com/fitVdcf.jpg

Sniper is a Barranquilla, Colombian boa. A locality animal of decent size. But he's still not 7 feet long and is close to 6 years old.

I think you'd be fine with almost any boa constrictor male and even some females to be honest.

I highly doubt she'll pull out a tape measure, hahahaha. I'm hoping I can educate her a bit more and since she's already been so open to snakes she will surely be open to learning. I figure if I start with a juvenile she'llbe more inclined to be comfortable as it grows.

    Yes,

Exactly! She sounds pretty cool. I keep thinking back to when I thought 6 feet was a huge size. I find 8 feet to be a very handleable and impressive size. For a boa constrictor 8 feet is huge, it really is because of the thickness. A female BCC/BCI (BC or BI) at 8 feet is very impressive.

The addition of a semi arboreal snake will compliment the beautiful but terrestrial STP you have.

    Variety is fun.

This is entertaining, and I'll bet your girl would actually like a boa.

Yeah, I'm one of the lucky ones, she's a great girl. She puts up with me, so a lot of people would probably consider her a saint, hahaha!!!

I definitely like variety, hence 4 snakes right now and all different species. I probably won't add a second of any one species unless I just happen to fall crazy in love with a certain species. But, considering how much I love Kings and won't get a second yet I doubt it'll happen. Maybe a boa would prove me wrong though...

For comparison's sake, what your your Columbian boy weigh at 6+ feet?

That's a fantastic picture, by the way...

    Thank you.

I'm not sure on weight. He's about 6.5+ feet. Maybe 10 pounds maybe a little more.

    He's a very easy keep.

I love Kings as well. I was once the fence between an Eastern Chain King and a carpet. Ultimately I went for a coastal carpet. She's a mutt though. I'm not 100% sure what the genetics are. I'm quite pleased though. Carpets are a wonderful species.

Ok cool, that's actually a bit heavier than I was guessing just looking. He's gorgeous by the way!

That's funny you say that, I was thinking about a juvenile eastern chain before I got Django, my Cal King. I had a Cal King years ago and when I handled Django I just knew he was the one. He's proven to be my all time favorite snake. And a carpet is definitely on my list. I just wanna go boa next. I've got 2 pythons now and want, you guessed it, variety. Hahaha. But a carpet is only a few spits down the list.

This is my South Brazilian BCA, Jax. This pic was taken last year when he was about 5'8-9". He is close to 6' now and weighs almost 10lbs. He can still easily be held up with one hand. I'm a shorty at 5'1" tall and can handle him easily.

Sorry, haven't updated Juice's thread in a while...

He's been eating since early June. So far, still a mouser, but he's eating regularly and hasn't refused.

I'll get some pics up after work.

Thanks! There's something to be said for normals, beautiful just the way nature created them.

He's turning out to be such a chill, easy snake too. He's skyrocketing towards the top of my "favorite snake I've ever kept" list.

Thanks for the update. If I ever get borneo, I'd hope he would be as chill!

From what I've heard most short-tails are pretty mellow once they grow out of the nippy baby stage.

Juice is a stud Craig! Hard to believe that big boy is a mouser. How many mice do you have to feed him at one time?

Thanks Ziggy! He'll only take two, I've offered a 3rd three times, all no-go. I'm waiting til he goes into shed to wait him out. Once I see the first sign of shed he'scut off til after he sheds and I'm going to try to switch him to rats.

Looks great! Hope he switches soon. Is good to see him having a good temper. My collections is complete for a while but If I did add another eventually, this would make the short list.

Those are some awesome pics of Juice. Honestly I have often found Borneo pics kind of boring. Everyone seems to be doing super-stripes and after a while they all look the same to me. I much prefer Juice's natural patterning and variety.
