New Burm! "Dexter " the Pearl Burmese python progression thread
Well guys and gals, I finally caved in after researching Burms for quite a long time. ...and purchased a male Pearl (hypo albino) 66% poss het granite Burm tonight. Pairing was a female Albino het granite x male Ivory het albino het granite poss het labyrinth. The labyrinth het has not been proven from the male so there is a very slight chance my boy could be het labyrinth as well.....I wasn't worried so much about the hets as I have no intentions to breed but it's just icing on the cake.

He is set to arrive in late March or early April (weather permitting of course).....as its 6 degrees and snowing in central Wisconsin right now.

Definitely having an adult beverage or two tonight.:gj:

Tell me about it! I actually MapQuested the distance and time for a drive from Wisconsin to Kansas (where he's coming from) but I just don't feel like driving that long and I don't think the airlines want you to have a baby Burm in your carry-on lol.

I would want to see that image! ....maybe hide him in a bag of trail mix or something

I actually thought about taking a Greyhound for the first time in my life as well because they don't really check bags but I ultimately came to the conclusion that I"m just going to have to wait.

Thats a good idea actually. Just have the breeder pack him the same way he would with heat packs ect.. Might cost $150-$200 for round trip Bus fair but save $50 on shipping. I couldn't wait 2-3 months.

I think with all the terminal transfers and everything considered I'm just going to have to be patient. It's like a 9 hour drive directly or an 18 hour bus trip one way with transfers in Chicago and Kansas City (pretty sketchy lol). Who knows though....maybe we will get a couple 40 degree days in February :D

Small world I believe My new Burm I picked up last month came from an identical pairing (male/female) from a breeder in Kansas (DLR) in Overland Park, Ks. I
have a picture of the mother and father of your Burms parents I beleive. I couldn't be happier with my little one and I guess this makes us related quite possibly sort of. LOL

That would be the guy! He knew his stuff, I could gather that after talking to him about his husbandry standards and feeding.

Wow, yeah post away on the pictures, I would love that. Welcome to the family lol! I think he said the clutch was 31 or 32 eggs.....so we've got a large family!

Here you go KevinK. The mother, father, and your new Burms brother. Meet Loki. I couldn't agree more about DLR. Great guy and I'm thinking about heading to KC this weekend for the reptile show. He will be there and I always enjoy talking with him. Problem is I KNOW what will happen if I go. LOL The Granite I got from him won me over in about 2 seconds. I've seen very few baby Burms act as docile as the one I got from him. Not nippy at all and huffed and puffed once the day after I got him. It has even become a lap snake already. Gets on my lap and will just lay there. It has no fear and is not head shy at all. To say I'm happy is an understatement. In a weird way I kind of miss the nippiness baby Burms usually display. I guess a person is a snake lover if you miss getting bit. LOL. Enjoy.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9fb694c990.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5fbeafec91.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...26005553c9.jpg

Wow! I see those fully grown adult Burms and I just smile with happiness! Thank you! Your pics will go on the lineage sheet I always print out for my animals! I'm expecting the huffy/hissy nature and some biting myself but I'm so used to it as I work with jungle carpets that it honestly doesn't phase me anymore lol. I also had a pretty unpredictable BCC female back in the day that would keep me on my toes so I know what I'm getting myself into haha. Still, hook taming a Burm is of the utmost priority for me so I don't have to deal with surprises when he's fully grown.

You guys are really making me question driving down there or not lol. One thing is for certain, if I do I'm getting a hotel room for the night. You think I'd be fine with heat packs and the typical Styrofoam box for that long? I can't see why not if I bring him into the hotel room...... unannounced of course lol.

The weather is supppse to break here by Thursday. At least get back above freezing and low 50's on Saturday. I wouldn't be scared to transport a snake in this weather. Heck you could craft a transport box made from a Styrofoam cooler. I wouldn't even mess with heat packs. Pick up a 100 watt power inverter and plug it into your cigarette lighter/12v outlet. Put a small 8 watt UTH in your cooler with a thermostat. Place a digital thermometer in the cooler with the display on your dash and you can monitor temps all the way home. My emergency heating system is set up this way with 12V gel cells and access to deep cycle batteries if needed.

    Glad you liked the pictures.

I like that idea quite a bit actually if I ever get to some trade shows here! I'm a bit of a cheapskate however haha.... as I'm in the process of renovating my home so I might just have to suck it up with the heat packs but I think it'll all be worth it when I have a new reptile room with freshly refinished oak floors lol.

You would be fine. In fact the wall heaters you control in a Motel room would keep a cooler 78+ alone if you put it on the table in front of the heater vent. Then the heat pack from the breeder for the car.
Friday through Tuesday is above freezing by the way.. If he shipped Monday & you picked him up yourself at Fedex Tuesday morning at 9am it would work out. I got mine last year Dec 29th. It was 40-42 (daytime) degree for 3 days.

Heck, you can just bring a small sterlite tub and a little heating pad. Set the room temp to 78 or so and you should be fine. I've yet to meet a snake that liked really high temps. All of my snakes tend to spend 90% of the time on the 78F side of their cages lol. Usually only see them on the flexwatt when they are shedding for some weird reason.

I’ll drive any distance! I love to drive. I drove from Buffalo NY to Iowa for my big girl. Since no caging was involved, I took my Focus (37mpg). Just slept in the car and cleaned up at an Interstate stop. I’d never last waiting! Road trip!:gj:

I'm kind of torn at this point but I think I'm going to make the drive and just crank up the temperature in the motel room. Then use heat packs and styro container for the ride back. I'll have to get in contact with him shortly. I'll be sure to take pictures of the roadtrip.....I'm looking forward to some decent BBQ for once as well, something you can rarely find up here.

Why is it that, in winter, when we want good shipping weather, it hits on a weekend, but when we want a nice weekend holiday, it hits on Wednesday?

If driving is a concern, could you help ease the wait by jazzing up Dexter’s cage a bit? Or setting up an album or record book for his pictures and stats? The wait could be a little more fun and a little less angsty. ;)

Weather in this state never cooperates with anyone it seems lol.

He's got an animal plastics T8 ready to go with a proproducts heat panel that I MIGHT have to slip a divider into so he doesn't get stressed out by a 4ft cage so maybe I'll make one of those in the shop! My record sheet is all ready to go! :D Beer is the only thing that makes the wait a little better lol.

Build the divider just in case, then reassess the weather. What material are you going to use? How will you affix it so it can be removed later?

I've built them before and used one for my jungle carpet, you can get away with high quality 3/4" plywood because it's only temporary. As for affixing it?....I don't. I simply cut it to the exact dimensions that it needs to be, so in order to install it and remove it you actually need to pry up on the cage top a little bit to get it into place. The cage itself holds it in and no baby snake, regardless of species will be able to push past it.

That Burm wont get stressed in a T8 bro IMO.. I see a lot of talk about stressing snakes and the only time ive found really stressed snakes are when they come from bad breeders, pet stores, Reptile mills or if you dont know what your doing and toss them in a fish tank ect...
Of course Balls are prone to be nervous snakes period.. Probably because they are subject to harm easily in the wild. Burms (my Fav), Tics and larger breed Boa's seem to take things in stride more in my experience. Ive never owned Tics but had a Red Tail Boa as a teen and 2 Burms so far. Both my burms went with the flow, always explored and never acted like Nervous Nelly's. They are both still alive, 20 & 24 yrs old. Your gonna have some fun with this guy.
What I do is use my large 5qt water bowl in the middle of one side of my bottom T12 for my young snake with a hide against the Hot Side wall and the cool Hide just on the other side of the 5qt water bowl. That makes the snake have a smaller safer spot (1/2 enclosure). At night she comes out and lays across the empty side of the enclosure and crawls up the PVC pipes. So you can always do that instead of a divider.
Your getting a Burm from a reputable breeder I wouldn't worry about him being a stressed snake with the nice setup you have and a few days to settle in.
Here is a pic of the 1/2 side I use in my AP. The left side is just empty and she is happy to lay out over there at night.. Not stressed at all. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f1fa88a02e.jpg

That's really what I wanted to hear from someone who actually owns a Burm. With BP's the care information is pretty straight forward because there are so many breeders and professionals, with Burms you get quite a bit of conflicting info actually. Good to know! No divider then!....makes my life a bit easier. I believe with my JCP I let her settle into the new enclosure for three days at least before I really handled her so I'll probably do the same with the Burm but it's going to be hard to do so!

Your not new at this so you will notice the signs if you need to let him be for awhile.. I always give them a few days but i handle them for 10 min when i get them of course..then that night when they are out exploring i sit in front of the enclosure and watch hahahaha. Burms are confident gentile giants. There are nippy ones as hatchlings but I gotta say, i hear that thrown around way more than ive ever seen it with my own eyes.. Then again I'll watch people that just get a snake go for it like its a dog.. I never reach over the top of them, i never go strait at them and i always keep them pointed away from me when holding them until they get a bit older and more predictable. I also use something when i go into the enclose to let them know its me. Sometimes the hook, sometimes i just pick up the hide and rub it on them. If there heads pointed away I'll actually use my own hand to rub their back, that way they know it's not feed time and they're going to be taken out. They love to huff and buff..thats just a burm. You'll have to take some videos when he is out. There my favorite specie.

10-4, yeah my jungle is SUPER jumpy so the whole thing about picking up from underneath rather than over the top is a must with her as well or you might be in for a surprise. She just likes to strike but it's usually just a "nose bump" strike if you will, I won't take any chances with the Burm though.

I plan on hook training him right from the start, and I'm sure I'll be camping out in front of his cage lol. I'm going to post pictures regardless but hopefully I'm able to do an unboxing video as well!!! I will keep you all posted!

I couldn't agree more with CALM, I've never seen a Burm that is stressed. I think Burms leave that issue with other species of snakes to worry about. A Burm has about 3 moods in my experience. Very docile, excuse me I'm in shed, and the unfortunate ones that never receive any owner interaction except the rare undersized meal. And those Burms aren't stressed they are the "I'm ready to kick someone's a$$" mood of Burms.

Sounds amazingly similar to boas except in a larger package lol. I can relate to those moods then , think I'll be set! Had a date this weekend which pushed the travel plans aside (wish I would've just gotten my boy instead lol) we will see this upcoming weekend!

Im curious to see the little bugger's attitude right out of the box lol, some of the unboxing videos Ive watched they are amazingly calm after being shipped cross country but I always plan for the worst lol.

If I can get the video editing software to work Ill do a seperate post with an unboxing video and then link to it with pictures under this thread.:gj:
