Females and more Females!

Well after the good luck of 2 for 2 with the unsexed balls we had (our 05 and the 03 we adopted) we figured that was that.

Dropped into the pet store a few days ago and they had just gotten in two larger sized ball pythons from two different private owners (pets) over the past day or so. Since they know us very well, they agreed to hold these two snakes so we could get them sexed by our herp vet and if they were females to discuss a deal for them both.

Today was the appointment and folks...it's happened again! 2 for 2! Both females, both healthy though one has a bit of scarring from what the vet says is likely an old burn from a heat lamp inside an enclosure. It's fully healed and should cause her no problems. Neither have mites or ticks and are in good body condition.

The vet estimated the lighter colored female as 2 to 2.5 years old and weighed her as 907 grams empty.

The darker colored female (Mike's favorite as she's quite dark tho is in shed currently) is estimated to be at least 3 years old and weighed empty at 1190 grams.

Both females are in decent shape, didn't mind being handled or probed so we made a deal with the pet store as they haven't had much costs involved with these snakes at all....got them for an amazing price!

So come Saturday we'll be the proud owners of:

1 05 female
3 03 females
1 02 female

Finn has his future all planned out LOL.

Also our wonderful vet took the time to teach me how to probe. She probed them first but did not tell me the results, then I probed and she confirmed that I was right they were both girls! I will go back for a few more supervised probes but I was pretty amazed at how slick it is once you are shown it.

What a day!

Thanks Christie! Mike and I in no way planned to acquire this many females this fast but there is no way I'm about to turn down healthy females that are free or nearly so.

We actually expected these two big ones to be males LOL didn't figure we could hit the odds twice so fast!

Sometimes life is just.............nifty! :D

ok, what is the address for this pet store? i'm going to have to hide out behind the place or something so i can get in on some of these females! i am sooooo jealous of you and your nice supplier of big girls. ;)

Some people have all the luck! I am so thrilled for you! You had to be so excited when you tried your hand at probing and your results were female (and were confirmed by the tech). Let's see, to think it all started with an innocent Mother's Day gift! LOL ;)

Emily, it's too funny as the pet store we've gotten 3 of the 5 females out of doesn't sex, doesn't want to learn to sex and could care less if I want to sex every snake in the store LOL. They were just happy to make a profit and turn over stock quickly and know the snakes will be taken good care of. It's nothing but blind luck they are all females really but I'll take this kind of luck any day!

Actually it was the vet that confirmed the sex Robin. She didn't mind teaching me to probe (also supplied me with my own sexing probes and some ky jelly). As she said - with all these snakes, she'll still get business from me for fecals and so forth LOL. As it was, since we took in females that needed homes, the vet only charged me $12.00 (no visit fee) to sex anyways. I don't know if the vet techs do probing but they are wonderful at firmly but gently restraining the snakes. I love the vet clinic we use from the support staff to the vet techs to the vets and everyone in between.

I will say this after the past couple of months, if you can find a nice private pet store that will let you know when decent healthy bp's come in, especially larger ones it can certainly pay off. The pet store turns over stock fast and you can save a major amount of cash.

That's incredible! You've certainly hit the female BP jackpot. With luck like that I can't wait to see what you get when you start breeding. :D Congrats. :) Making me want another so bad though. Must resist. I want a couple more months of experience and to switch to sterilite tub enclosures before I get another. :)

awesome jo! i've found a few good deals at pet stores too. normal females that are breeding size are worth their weight in gold. sounds like these girls will go next year no problem. time for a rack huh?

Thanks everyone! We've been terribly lucky and we know it but this is it for a long while. Had we not literally stumbled over these girls we'd have been quite happy with the 2 we started with.

A rack is a definite goal Vaughn though our priority is getting Finn the Pastel home with us by the end of this month, so for now a rack will wait. We may be out of flat spaces in the house LOL but we'll manage for awhile. Perhaps a rack will be our Xmas gift to each other!

If by some odd chance any more larger females show up in our local pet store, I'll pass that information along as I'm sure someone here would offer them a good home. I never thought I'd post this but I do not want another female right now thanks! LOL

Never turn down breeding or near breeding size females! Adam taught me that one. You can never have enough females. Now was he talking about snakes or women? Not sure with him :)

I know it's crazy to turn down females Jamie but really we have acquired a lot of females very fast for newbies. Mike and I don't want, in our growing enthusiasm for this hobby, to go so fast we get overwhelmed and make any stupid, avoidable errors. We also have a committment to Adam for Finn so for now it's just smart to rein it in till at least spring. (I may well have to eat my words I know LOL).

We are also SERIOUSLY out of large flat areas in our home LMAO. I have no dressers in the house that don't have a snake on em! My lovely hutch is gone to clear the longest dresser. My once romantic bedroom is a quarantine room! (stop laffing at me Adam Wysocki this sort of thing I'm sure amuses your warped sense of humor LOL)

I do laundry with the company of Rauri, Becky's RTB (laundry room called Quarantine Room #2, Master Bedroom now being of course QR #1)

I would sell my soul (or my husband) for a decent rack!

Oh Jamie, Robin...please do remember I have 4 kids...I can NOT be sucked up to effectively. My oldest daughter is the Queen of the Kiss Up to Mom act.

The most you're likely to get for that behaviour is a snarky look and a strong suggestion you retire to your rooms to "think about the proper way to ask for something" and "being nice to another person is a GOOD thing!". LOL (gawd I sound like my own mother far too much!)

We have that link. Mike is wanting to build that rack. I don't want to be divorced or have our youngest learn that many cuss words!
