9-1-1 new fox show condones killing snake as show gag.
Just watched the premier of 9-1-1 and one of the setups was the firefighters going to an upper class house for a 911 call about a woman choking because her albino what looked like a burmese was coiling around her neck.
They arrive to find the snake wrapped around the neck of the victim and make a pathetic attempt to uncoil it but of course seem to have trouble. The plucky troublemaker young firefighter yells how they don't have time for this and hacks off the snake's head. Instead of the owner having a fit about it she makes goo-goo eyes at the pretty firefighter that saved her life.
This is absolutely disgusting treating a snake like a filthy object bound to kill the owner. I understand some people are careless about the care of their snakes but to have a show kill a snake for drama instead of using realistic attempts to uncoil an obviously not aggressive snake is to me beyond animal abuse. I understand the snake did not really die but even in the acting it shows a gross disrespect for the herp hobby and owners.
I am writing Fox to complain as well as any other advocacy groups to criticize them portraying killing a snake unnecessarily without consequence.

I don't appreciate the comment. This upset me greatly and I felt strongly enough to say something about it.

part of me wants to agree with Godzilla, but the other part of me agrees with you SDA.
i hate the ignorance, i hate the stereotype, and the best thing we can do is provide knowledge. however, people watching those types of television aren't in it for the info.
do you have a link to anything about the show? honestly idk what show you're talking about lol and i'd like to form my own opinion.

I've only seen the promos but that just seems like lazy writing on their part, I wouldn't expect them to do anything about it. And not to nitpick but that snake was a retic lol. They show it in the promo at about 3 seconds in.

I think it's legit to be upset. Think how people would be screaming if they hacked the head off a cat because it was jumping on it's owner. But because it's a snake, it's not only okay, it is often seen as humorous.
Shows that are completely fictional still influence their viewers. The character could have unwound the snake and still been seen as a hero, saving her life, blah blah. But instead they beheaded a pet.

No they won't and I am just worked up about something that won't get anything done but if we want to change the impression about snakes this kind of bad tv won't help.
Sorry if I offended anyone for making something out of nothing.

i think Godzilla's statement was out of empathy and an attempt to help you not focus so negatively on something. i think they meant it in a caring way. [emoji4] (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong!)
no one is offended with your passion to keep these animals in a positive light. heck, we're a snake forum! here, your feelings are 100% valid. if you find a way to get in contact with anyone, i will gladly send something out along with you. if i saw the same thing (tho honestly, from your description, i'd rather avoid it), i'm sure i'd be posting here as furious as you.

Don't get me wrong, I think trying to change the negative impressions about snakes is a noble goal I just think writing to fox isn't a very good way to getting that across. Maybe if more people who aren't familiar with snakes got a chance to actually interact with them we might be able to change some opinions about them. My interest in snakes started when I took a zoo tour and they let us handle a couple snakes.

Writing to Fox(or to the show creators) can't hurt either though. If that's the only thing that you CAN do in response, then do it.
You can also tweet to the producers, the stars, the show twitter, the channel twitter...
You can post on the facebook pages of all of those.
You can post on the Instagram pages of all of those.
Etc.
Use social media to share that it was unacceptable to show the beheading of a PET on the show in your opinion. Write calm, reasoned posts too, not giant all-caps shouts about SNAEKS R UR FRANDS! Point out that millions of reptiles are kept as pets, or that showing the killing of an animal kept as a pet is not good programming, whether it's a snake or a kitten.. these will possibly be read as a coherent response. After all, you're not saying they should cancel the show and charge everyone with animal cruelty... you're just wanting to point out that it WAS a pet, and unacceptable to kill pets for no reason.
Try not to get emotionally upset as much as possible, because that won't help, either you or the reptiles. But it's upsetting. It's promoting cruel behavior. It's vilifying reptiles.

Re: 9-1-1 new fox show condones killing snake as show gag.
I live snakes, they are my favorite animal and my only pets.
I also like some movies that glamorize violence toward snakes. As I said before, it is just TV drama. One of my favorite films portrays a hero character chopping and stabbing a huge pet snake.
The snake is a fearsome predator attacking him and he kills it. It’s cool.

My point is freedom of speech. We can make films with any “obscene” content and it’s perfectly acceptable.

I admire your passion and commend your efforts. I doubt any attempt to voice your opinion about the negative portrayal of a snake will make it much further than the cyber trash can. FOX thrives on controversy. Animal Rights groups raised holy he11 about the show Man vs Beast years ago. After the protests, FOX renewed it for a 2nd season. I wish you luck.

Re: 9-1-1 new fox show condones killing snake as show gag.
I havent seen the show myself but I don't like when people dramatize snakes to be vicious animals. I know it's TV show, but people think this is how snakes really are, and when people that dont understand snakes see stuff like that, they get the wrong impression of both snakes and snake keepers. Just my 0.2, I haven't seen it so maybe I got the wrong idea.

Cop shows take realism and throw it in the garbage. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re: 9-1-1 new fox show condones killing snake as show gag.
My advice is simply to stay positive about the issue, if you have a photo of you with a Burm, simply post it on social media and address it to the show in question and state how nice of a species they are.
Becoming offended and then voicing your opinions never changes people's minds, this holds true in so many fashions in this country....but that's all I'm going to say about that.
-
Of course if this was about a dog getting beheaded for jumping up there would be a media outrage ://
Ridiculous that just because some people are afraid of snakes/don't understand them, this BS is being spread in the media to serve only to spread the fear and lack of knowledge. I'd definitely complain too, but I don't think I could bring myself to watch the commercial to write an accurate complaint of what happened :(

Re: 9-1-1 new fox show condones killing snake as show gag.
From what I've heard the show show sucked anyway. Probably won't make it to a second season.
Still - treating snakes like they are pure evil is the same as saying pit bulls/german shepherds, etc are dangerous dogs - it's just pure ignorance that is unfortunately blindly accepted by the masses that don't care to educate themselves.
-
Lol, the poor snake during the scene. It's just chilling around her shoulders. (At least, from the promo that was posted.)
As if a snake just lazily drapes itself across its owner's shoulders and starts squeezing. If a retic was trying to coil you, it would definitely be more noticeable.
Anyways, anybody who owns a retic (or any large snake) is not going to be as stupid as the character that's being "coiled" is being portrayed as, though I do admit accidents happen. You know what happens even more often though? Let's Google how many pet-dog-related deaths happen per year, as opposed to pet-snake-deaths.
Why didn't the 911 writers write about a scene in which somebody was being mauled by their dog? Or their kid was being mauled by their dog? And then the police come and chop its head off.
It wouldn't happen because it's disrespectful to both the dog species and the people who love them, despite being a much more common happenstance.
I know it's "just TV" but you have to consider that the media that's produced by our society is a direct reflection of our opinion towards certain topics.
-
I didn't see anyone mention it yet but this is a reflection of reality. A lot of these police drama literally take real stories and make fictionalized versions. This event just happened a year or so ago except it was a boa constrictor. And people here had a fit about that too.

Did they actually kill the snake or was it fake?

I highly doubt it. The clip with the snake wrapped around her neck looks like a well taken care of pet. The hacked one was likely a rubber duplicate.
