Loose eco earth coconut fibe

I’m at the pet store and need a quick answer. Is ecovearth loose coconut fiber good for tub
substrate? It looks pretty fine and messy.

I know some people use it, but I personally don't like it for snakes.

They also have coco soft which is coconut husk chunks

I prefer aspen or paper because they're cleaner.

I’m leaning towards the coco husk, but the loose fiber looks really awesome at humidity and odor.

I know it isn't a sustainable resource, which sucks, but if they have cypress mulch, I would get that. Shredded aspen isn't bad either, but I find it molds easier and can be dusty.

Really the best for tubs is paper towels in my opinion. I don't like seeing snakes get a mouth full of sticky substrate or getting dust in their heat pits.

I’ve got cypress mulch now, I’m switching. The coconut husks looks extreme similar. I’ve researched and coconut is clearly the best, just not sure if the ground fiber or chuncks of husks is better for snakes.

I've never tried coco husk but I can say the loose Eco earth is amazing! It is quite messy but it works great for humidity. I've thought about switching to coco husk but the Eco earth already works for me and you get used to how messy it is. My bp also loves to burrow in it from time to time :P

You could get both and mix them. I do use coconut fiber in a variety of enclosures, but it is always cut with other things like cypress mulch, sand, sphagnum, etc. It seems far less "sticky" that way.

If I had to pick one, I suspect husks would be easier to spit out and still give you humidity retention.

I’m going to try both I guess. That other thread that was linked, just turned into a huge debate.

ecoearth fine coconut fiber looks messy, but if I keep it on a layer of paper, it should be easy to keep from sticking to the tub. Also, the bag says it is great for bio activity and natural ware decomposition, superb odor control.

also, I think a mouthful of dirt would be better than sharp husk chunks, in an accident. It looks like dirt, that they would dwell in their natural environment.

Reptile Prime is the perfect compromise !!

Its a coco substrate. It doesn't have big chunks (disliked them) and its not super fine like the "earth" (messy).

Makes it easy to control humidity, is low dust, easy to clean. You will have to check your snakes for "messes" more often, because you won't smell them anymore.
Which to me, is a good thing ;)

Thanks Zina, they don’t have that brand here. I’m going to mix them, it seems a good compromise, plus I can try one at a time to see how it goes.

Yes, it has to be ordered online, so that adds to the cost. To me, its worth it, because I don't have a huge collection and its so easy to work with ;)

Well, all coconut is amazing at odor control. I’ve beeb using cypress mulch for months, and it amazed me at how well it kept up humidity and controlled odor compared to aspen.
i seriously sometimes open their tubs and don’t even notice any waste, because the cypress mulch absorbs the waste matter so well.
cypress mulch is awesome, I’m only switching because I’m an environmentalist.

These little guys are on coconut fiber. They are kept well, with a contained plastic enclosure, humid environment, no heat lamp, no screen, and heat pads on the back. One of them climbed on the wall to get some extra heat.
“Pet supermarket.” I was surprised because most pet stores keep them like desert lizards in glass tanks with screen tops, heat lamps and dry substrate, the reptile keeper at this store clearly knows what they are doing.
They will get my business over the other pet stores in town. Much better care of their animals here.

Eco earth is fine it just comes damp in the bad nand needs to be dried out a bit. Reptile prime is amazing stuff and easy enough to order online. I would recommend buying some next time you can. For use in a pinch, loose bagged eco earth will work but again, it's damp in the bag.

I mixed Eco Earth with Forest Floor....amazing with humidity, in two weeks I’ve had to spray once, it’s humidity is high at first but balances out, but I have glass enclosures for all 4 BPs and my Boa

I've still got nice cypress mulch in the tubs, but I ran out of my bags. Not sustainable to harvest cypress, so I am switching to coconut, as others here have raved about how great it is as a tropical reptile substrate. I am going to use a mix of 1)paper at the bottom of the tub, to help cleaning. 2) next, a layer of eco-earth to add humidity, help absorb and compost waste, and provide a burrowing substance. 3) a top layer of coconut husk mulch to keep the eco-earth dust down. It sounds good in theory anyway.

a new rack, new thermostat, a new room humidifier, a fairly new space heater, and now designer substrate... my snakes are living in luxury! lol

I use eco earth for my bp, works good for humidity but it quite messy. It's looseness is concerning to me (,mostly when feeding ) so I might try something else.

The best part about coconut fiber is when your adult male ball python gets a chunk stuck in his teeth and flails around like a baby so you try and be a good mom and grab him by the neck and yank it out only to realize he has somehow developed the strength of 10 snakes and you have to let go because it is either his neck or your arm that is coming off. I have had one heck of a week with these snakes I am exhausted!

Edit: true story, I wish it wasn't but right now Dante is hiding like I stole his favorite candy.

They all ate like clockwork last night too... good husbandry equals happy snakes.

I personally switched to Reptichip about a year ago and haven't looked back. Their substrate has been amazing. It's really soft, looks excellent compared to the store bought stuff and yields a lot of substrate for the cost of about 20$ a brick. Typically i pick it up at reptile shows here in the midwest but you can also order it.

So I tried the loose eco-earth coconut fiber for the first time and I love it! I am going to try next mixing the coconut fiber with the coco soft coconut husk mulch next. I will definitely be using the eco-earth from now on, on a couple layers of newspaper. Eco-earth ground coconut shell

Pro-tip... agitate the substrate every so often if it is damp at all when you put it in. Keep the moisture from accumulating at the bottom and helps dry it to the point of it being safe for a ball python.

I've settled on Eco-earth loose coconut fiber as the best. I like the earthy texture vs. the mulch. I don't like the mulch chunks. I will be using eco-earth and paper from now on. (after I use up the rest of the coco husk mulch, blended with the eco-earth)

I like it too, but I think I'm going to try another substrate it's rather messy lol.
