If I knew then what I know now..
I'd have gotten a boa from the beginning and skipped bp all together!

Thanks to all of you for suggestions and information I made the jump about a year ago. I love this little dude! He's about 1 year 7 months right now. Yesterday was dinner so I can't pester him for nice photos, but I'll post some soon.

Look into retics lol. They are even more exciting than boas.

I will say i do have a BP and still like them. They are just different, generally not as social as a boa but i wouldnt get rid of Dottie for anything.

That is why i like variety and have my BP, a dumerils, a retic and obviously i love boas as i have 5 of them and plan on getting another one or two as well as i do want an ultra ivory SD retic. Caesar is the root of my worry with all his antics but dang he such a social and needy snake as far snakes go and is right there for attention unless he is shedding. Then he is Mr Grumpy and just sits on me not moving and giving me stink eye until i let him go back into a hide lol.

And sure you can, i pulled all my boas out the day after feeding and changed their substrate and cleaned their cages lol. I tend to feed smaller though so none of my boas ever get food lumps in them.

Many snake lovers allow 48 hours for digestion - before handling ..

I actually started with King snakes, got about five of them and then went to NARBC in Tinley Park and discovered my love for ball pythons. I made the switch 100%, not even planning on breeding my King snakes. I do have one Banana California King snake that I really like as a pet and probably won't ever get rid of her, she loves to be handled and is very inquisitive. I also have a pair of retics just to dabble in something different. I also have been looking at getting a couple boas but the thing that is holding me back is that I'd have to get two more large enclosures which is a major expense and takes up room that I don't have at the moment.

Boas grow slower than paint dries. My 6.5 ft girl lived in a 4x2 for about 5 years before i moved her over to a 6x3. And considering an AP T25 fully loaded with shipping ran me about $650 each, thats not bad for a forever home for a boa.

I kept telling myself I only need one. Just one snake is all I need. Now we are thinking of getting another and even another as by spring will have a GTP. I would totally own something larger in a heartbeat now. Granted a retic is out of my sanity range as there is now way I could handle something that large but something the size of a bc (bci bcc bcu whatever the designation is this month) or brb.

I love my BP to death but having variety is so much fun

I have adult female Tarahumara dwarf boas in a 41-qt rack and they have room to spare. With dwarf localities you just need to ensure that you're buying from a reputable seller so you don't end up with a cross that grows larger than expected.

I actually have been looking at super dwarfs. They are super reasonable in price (no pun intended lol). Bob Clark even breeds them and while his prices are always high I would love to own one of his snakes.

I would also check out Shannon Roepke at Ethereal Exotics and Mike Zosso. They both work with lots of SD stuff and make some awesome looking stuff.

If you can handle a boa, you can handle a SD retic fine. They stay thinner that boas, just a little longer and obviously more active. The biggest thing to prepare yourself for is how much they can piss and poop lol. And the biggest downside is their pushing sometimes. That single thing has been the source of my worry for Caesar. His lip was fat and i was so stressed he broke a tooth and it didnt go down for about a week. Well it turns out, he was going into shed at the same time so his head did the shedding swell which made the face look even worse lol. Now the swelling is down and he is being his antisocial shed self and all dull. I went to check on his face and lifted his hide and pulled him out and threw him over my shoulder. He sat there and gave me stink eye the whole time and didnt move lol. His face looked 100 times better and thats when i saw he was going into shed. I put him back and have only seem him a couple times this week when he poked his head to look at me lol.

I'm about to get another snake soon if weather behaves so another one is a ways away. Funny you mention Mike Zosso, I was just looking at his facebook page before I hopped on here.

Is there a crazy snake lady designation like crazy cat lady. Can I be the female version of that guy from the Patrick Swayze movie Next of Kin that had the bus full of snakes
